Old gits terrace legends

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Can I please have some of what you are on..... !
Amyl nitrite was your tipple if I recall correctly.
Only the once and memory says it was on the paper train from Liverpool Street to Harlow in the early hours of one Sunday morning. Can't recall which match we were returning from..... Harlow Gooners meet the Gay clubbers....!
It was a home match. Post match drink in pub on Caledonian Road (Wenlock Arms?) Was it West Ham? Did you have a Boro fan with you playing the piano in said pub? Did Mad Chris Harris (MCH a Charlton fan from HM Customs & Excise) give you the drug?

Fantastic memories and stuff that can never happen again. Does anyone on here remember the wonderful drinking sessions in the Bank of Frienship on Blackstock Road? We did not always get in the ground before the match had started. The landlord was a top chap but his wife and her cousin were not to be crossed

spot on MK. However, we also did it against the mancs in about '80 or '81. Cockney Reds used to make a show in the NB every year then get escorted up the CE. So we made out we were CR. The shout went up and some of the NB came over to have a pop. the look on some faces when they realsied who we really were. Some were so excited they almost gave the game away. Off we marched along the west stand with the mancs giving us a huge reception not knowing the truth. We got right in the middle of 'em and as the teams came out a shout of 'Arsenal' and then straight into them.

got escorted back down the NB and after the game chased them all the way back to holloway road. I got turned over by plod and missed my appearance at Highbury magistrates due to teh fact the wankers had burst my appendix and I was in hospital for FOUR weeks.

Got a case dismissed when it finally came around.
Can't be arsed to read all 17 pages of this again but it beats moaning about Wenger not spending money.
Us old bastards of all got stories from the 70s and 80s but I've got to say that standing on the North Bank as a young teenager in the 70s and watching the action at the Clock End was always a wonderful experience!!

Up the Arsenal :barscarf:

He did indeed - did not know he was living up north now though.

HoY Boy
He lives in Gateshead actually amongst other things he ran a big old boozer that has half Bar codes half mackems and managed to keep the peace by giving them their own bar .
Known as big john (he isnt) his son is a Gooner too and they used to come down frequently.
It Was before my time but Arsenal were top dogs in London when he ran the show, met him in the late 70's a quiet
man very likeable and seemed at odds with the reputation he had.
Jenkins
No urban myth but a real fella Byron from Penge ,he took on the mantel of leader as Arsenal denigrated as major firm in the early 70's largely due to in fighting .
The infighting comprised of Islington estates against each other ,plus north -south and even east London turnouts.
Byron had his own crew but never really was a leader as he went on the missing list too often and was a bit of a Bully too
but hasd to be said him and Kenny Barton held us together a few times.
Not universally liked of old but mellowed in the years were puff instead of booze was taken in the stands .
He still goes now .
Harry
Vanished from sight after falling out with the travel club mob ,haven't seen him in 30 years
Julie and Jill
Julie died 20 + years ago Jill is of course Jill Smith who is or was the fan liason Officer at Arsenal after being with the FA for many years ,love her to pieces
Legsy
MK mentioned this one ,total nobhead but alive and believed to be posting crap from a sweat shop in Malaysia somewhere. Oh and its 2 G's thanks !
Denton
No longer with us and sorely missed ,larger than life character who came to prominence as a 15 year old before mellowing in his later years .

Theres many a character that are still around but so many stopped going to all but the euro aways where life is more fun !

Sad to say it mate but that day many did. Also that was the day a gooner was stabbed to death at Arsenal Underground.
I ended up on the left of the North Bank out in the corner thanks to the old Bill, and when we scored a few us went up only to realise that we were among loads of West Ham.
Fortunatley they'd had enough .... we hadn't.
Another memory was a 2-1 win away at the Hammers in probably the same season maybe 1981 not sure. I think it was Tony Adams debut, where Johnny Hollins talked him through the match (he also scored the winning penalty). I remember the racist abuse of Chris White and Paul Davis I think with many bananas in evidence.
That day we were separated from the the West Ham boys by a high security ..... ribbon!!! Needless to say it was a tasty time.
yes mate it was the same season
the game was in 1981 but it was 17 year old stewart robson who was debuting
chris whyte got our other goal and yes davis played as well
stuart pearson scored for them

Now they were the days, 82 West Ham in the Northbank with a smoke bomb ,i was 16 to 17 and got split lip ,black eye and a kick up the ribs for my troubles but still a good day out ,dont let that West Ham mob tell you they had it all their own way not true we had results against them and all the so called top firms. It was all down to your luck on the day and how many numbers you could rumble up, I can even remember one freezing cold winters night around the same time having Chelsea on their toes right across Highbury fields totally outnumbered by us, and always the legendery meetings with the scum from shite hart lane i think still to this day goes on simmering quitely out of the way of the watchful eye
Remember that night against Chelsea. I got nicked on Highbury Fields but the OB had to let me go as they didn't have a van nearby and there was too much going on. So the copper punched me in the face and told me to piss off, which i happily did straight back to the rest ofthe firm.
In a strange way, I think there was always some sort of respect between football fans and coppers. The coppers were just ordinary blokes in uniform who liked a punch up but couldn't let it be known and football fans, well...
So if you gave it out then you expected it back.................................
Cetainly no whining like they do now.

PS - Best thread we've seen on here.

I'm disappointed that nobody has come forward yet with any interesting stories! I was relying on you Herd or were you like me and for some reason away games at The Den always seemed to fall on a Saturday that clashed with a wedding you had to go to?!?!!?

Remember a cup game at home in the late 80s, stood in the Arsenal Tavern and in they steamed...I think I ended up over the other side of the bar. Was like a scene from a spaghetti western!!
