Of course it's good to have a European Cup/UEFA Champions League but some team's that won it were lucky in that their club was going through a great era in their history at the time. Real Madrid are a perfect example (their early triumph's)

What if there hadnt have been a European Cup to win in the 70's/80's for Liverpool? What if you lot hadnt got our '89 team banned from Europe? When we dominated English football and won every game of our European tour's there was no European Cup for us to win.

So it has nothing to do with the great jobs the coaches, manager and players were doing at Porto the time they won their 2 European cups? Yeah, I guess it boils down to luck. They won their European cups in 1987 and 2004 too. Look at the teams in both competitions and tell me they were lucky. If you're implying that Porto are not a big club you are sadly mistaken. Football hooliganism was ripe at the time in England and Heysel was the straw that broke the camels back, if it didn't happen it would have eventually happened to another set of fans. While the Liverpool fans that day should get a lot of the blame, Arsenal, Millwall, United, and a lot of other clubs should take a small bit of the blame for their part in hooliganism throughout the 1970s and 80s.

Watching the hull match I dont think I've ever seen so many chrous' of SOAAC in my entire life, they did it when sagna was poleaxed, when denilson was poleaxed, when bendter was wrestled to the ground and pretty much anything they thought might make sense. Stoke were just as guilty and it was only when the severity of the ramsey injury spread round that they formed something approaching dignity.

Its embarrasing on their part. And coming back to your point about this being the best kind of atmosphere... not true. Clubs like Portsmouth create brilliant atmosphere without the need to resorting to embarrasing chants of ingurland ingurland to anywhere near the same extent as what you get at wolves, stoke, hull etc

Didn't they score in the last minute vs Man U to knock them out, having seen Scholes have a goal wrongly ruled out for offside? Didn't they play just about the weakest opposition the competition has seen in recent years, in the final?

Liverpool were even luckier with their CL win.

Didn't Barcelona score a last minute goal v Chelsea and somehow dodged 3-4 clear penalties? Porto got out of a group with Real Madrid, Marseille and Partizan in it. They then beat United in the kockouts, Lyon in the quarters, they then beat Deportivo in the semi's, the same Deportivo that knocked out Juventus and Ac Milan over two two-legged games. Hardly the easiest of routes. I don't understand how when teams win a big competition some people say "they were lucky", it's just sad really, I guess if you win it there'll be no luck involved.

When did I say we were never lucky? We were lucky to get the freekick we scored from vs Barcelona, we were lucky Lehmann saved Riquelme's penalty vs Villareal (although desperately unlucky to concede it), lucky Raul didn't score for Real Madrid (another great Lehmann save).

I just don't think Porto are a massive international force. Their CL win reminded me of Greece's European Championship win.

And Partizan aren't a big club, this isn't 1990 anymore
