Hi, I wonder if you could enlighten me on this one. I used to see a bird in Newcastle some years ago and was told that FTM meant fuck the mackems but a Sunderland supporter I used to work with insisted it was fuck the Magpies.

Do you know which side coined the insult first, or has the detail been lost in the mist of time?

what a daft bird. FTM has always been "fuck the mags"- it was coined ages ago by our lot (late 70s or early 80s iirc). No mags have ever used FTM with the "fuck the mackems" meaning, they simply wouldnt do it since everyone immediately thinks "fuck the mags" when they see it, the lass doesnt know what shes talking about! For ages the mags didnt have a slogan/ comeback to it but eventually (in the 90's) they started using "SMB" (Sad Mackem Bastards) as their "version" but we weren't overly offended by it and so we ended up calling our main message board "the SMB" (Sunderland Message Board) just to piss them off

Bendy is immense, done really well for us- he was injured when we played Everton and the ball just wouldnt stick up front and we got destroyed. Hopefully he'll be back on Saturday like

was this after Spurs??? He wasn't even all that good. Tried hard like but didnt really make an impact (albeit the service wasnt great). I'm also not 100% sure that I really want to bathe him in the bath or tickle him (I evidently would if pissed mind at 6 in the morning like)

Being honest mate its pretty difficult to score him. When Gyan left us in the lurch, Bruce obviously needed a striker so thats what he was signed as but its painfully obvious to everyone that has a clue that he isnt one, not an out and out centre forward anyway. He's scored a couple of good headers but generally speaking his best work is done outside the box. If we are struggling for possession he does well when dropping deep and drifting wide- he gets the ball and has the ability to hold it up and find a teammate. His passing can be inventive, he's a clever player and on his day (like Man City away) he can destroy anyone.

Don't get me wrong, I love the lad but he does split opinions. A fair few of our fans think he's lazy (I'd love to see the distances covered stats because I think he's one of our hardest workers, he just doesnt race around chasing lost causes like a lunatic but every corner we defend he gets himself back and is up the pitch again swiftly) and there are a lot who find him frustrating- he will get the ball outside the box, take a nice touch and play a good ball out wide and we'll be begging him to get in the box but he'll either stay where he is or drift towards the other flank leaving no one up there for a cross coming in. But a lot of our fans think he's class. Like I say, he just isnt a striker and doesnt have that instinct, he needs to be played in behind with an out and out striker ahead of him. Some of those who criticise him are just the kind of fans who worship Bardsley and plodders like him and cant appreciate a quality player who conserves his energy

He's had his off games (often when he's had absolutely no service from midfield mind) but for me he is a quality little footballer who, used in the right system could easily play CL football. I'm not actually sure I'd sign him after all this mind- I think he's great but his best position, by far, is in behind an out and out striker. The trouble is that a certain Stephané Sessegnon plays there. Bendy, for me, is the 4th best forward we've had behind Phillips, Quinn and Bent despite not being an out and out striker but Sessegnon is the best footballer I have ever seen at Sunderland- not as effective as Quinn and Phillips (yet) but in terms of ability he pisses on everyone I've seen at the club and I wouldnt shift him to accommodate Bendy, and our wage bill unfortunately cant accommodate both. I'd take him in a flash if we could afford it, but I think he'll need to move on to Germany or Russia.

Mind, you lot have been linked with Sessegnon (as have Man United and PSG), if we did sell him (and if it isnt this year he'll leave next year but it would really have to be around £30m) then I'd be chuffed to see Bendtner take over his role. As a centre forward Bendy cant really get a massive mark out of ten but overall I'd give him an 8 to be honest- chipped in with important goals, played some lovely stuff, just a very good footballer and a canny lad aswell. He's better than Gyan, played properly he's up there with Bent, but he's no Sessegnon.

Dont know how much you've seen of him mate but the bloke is utter class and will go on to be one of the best in the league. I'm not saying he's worth £30m, I'm just saying that's what I think it should take for us to be prepared to let him go, there's a difference. If you consider it took £35m to get Carroll and £20m to get Henderson (who isn't even particularly good and didnt stand out at Sunderland, he was just a prospect), theres no chance we should be selling the best footballer we've had in my lifetime for much less than £30m. If no one wants to get near that valuation then I'd be happy to keep him and in a few seasons he'd leave on a free but, like we did with Henderson, we need to put high values on our players- if people want to pay it then you have to let them go but ideally there'd be no bids for Sess and we could strengthen with the money we make from selling Gyan

I think he'd suit Arsenal tbh and would do very, very well with your other players around him, probably suited to Arsenal more than the other clubs he's been linked to. He's one of those who I would absolutely love to keep but that is so good that I wouldnt begrudge leaving- we need to keep our best players to progress but being honest he deserves to be playing at a much higher level than alongside Craig Gardner and if he went to Arsenal, even this summer having not been here long, I'd genuinely wish him all the best, an utter pleasure to watch, one of those players who makes watching football worthwhile. I'd just want to know that the club got a good deal out of it and if he goes then good luck to him.

I see what you're saying, and can understand the point of view- as I say I'm just saying that, much though you wouldnt want to see your team pay more than around 15m for him, I wouldnt want mine to sell him for much less than 30m. End of the day he's our best player and if we got 15m for him now, how far would that go? An unproven (albeit very promising) Oxlade Chamberlain is £12m, Gervinho was £10m, we got Wickham for £8m- it doesnt go very far nowadays when you consider we would need to use the money to buy someone who can genuinely win us games on his own. Players like Sess are very hard to find and if you get one you dont sell him unless the money on offer is just too good to turn down which, imo, 15m wouldnt be. Maybe £20m plus Bendtner, you get rid of Bendy off the wage bill to free up room for Sess, we get a pretty good replacement for Sess and we get money to buy the out and out striker we still need. Liverpool were stupid to pay what they did for Hendo and Carroll (as were Chelsea with 50m for Torres) but their clubs were right to hold out for the highest fee they could possibly get
