World Cup Expanded to 48 teams

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Expanding the Euros should have been all the evidence they needed not to do it i.e. boring fucking games, with teams becoming more negative in the hope that finishing 3rd in a group could still get you through. There will be bigger mismatches which will result in either more one-sided hammerings, or worse still 11 men behind the ball stinking the place out

TBH I quite enjoyed the dregs of the 32-team World Cup. You'd see mental teams like Honduras or North Korea. Or teams that would bust a gut because it might be their only WC for a decade.

But at least you knew that even those minnows had worked to get to the finals. This will just dilute it to an absurd level, especially if more places go to Europe.

I like the idea of a league system, with promotion and relegation, but that's interesting, so no chance of it ever happening.

Yep. Absolutely. Keep the emerging markets interested and tap into the next wave such as Canada, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. Plus, it makes it less likely that one of the big boys misses out. If an England, France, Holland, Spain, Italy or Germany were ever to miss out, viewing figures plummet and the sponsorship deals and tv rights prices are worth less.

Oh fuck! Jack Charlton the saviour of the boys in green!
We will never hear these Irish tayles again as qualification will be almost automatic...

Seriously it's all about the cash, Scotland are up for it coz they are broke, I remember when there were 16 nations at Mexico 1970, perhaps the best I have witnessed every game was dramatic twists and turns all the way!
1982 was perhaps the worst when there were two stages of group games remember West Germany v Austria 0-0with the winner of the second phase of three teams, and now they are going back to three teams per group :banghead:

Selective viewing will be the order of the day, I cannot see the football purist sitting through bile, FIFA's attempt to gain positive publicity...
Over to the top seeds now, not only do we have CL drudgery, FIFA have now followed their lead, it's time to break up this farce and get football back to where it should be!..

16 fucking groups, 16!

i suppose it could have worked if only the top team qualified for the next stage, but as it stands you will have 16 easy groups and the top 2 qualify.
it looks like there will be 16 European teams which qualify so one European team for each group. Expect them ALL to qualify stage 2, as the groups will all be easier than their european qualifying groups. So the first stage of 48 matches will basically be a complete waste of time.
