In anticipation of that glorious day....let's be clear

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

In anticipation of that glorious day....let's be clear

Post by Bob Bayliss »

He may go this summer, he may not. Whenever it is announced you can bet that he will be lauded and feted, and as sure as night follows day there will be calls to name a stand after him or create some other monument to his genius.

Sorry, but he has been richly rewarded for his earlier achievements, and then some. He has trousered over £100million since he last won the Premiership 13 years ago. The one great manager in our history, Herbert Chapman, died in the middle of delivering us the first of three consecutive titles, and turned us from a modest London club to the most famous club side in the world. If only the Champions' League had existed in the 30s!

To afford Wenger an honour equivalent to Chapman's statue (he already has a bust) for clinging on and delivering over a decade of mediocrity would be an insult to the great man's memory. Wenger should just go with our good wishes - no statue, and certainly no question of a stand named after him or a testimonial match awarded to him.
