Defense - head v heart

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Defense - head v heart

Post by dano »

Our defenders (if you can call them that) are all experienced players. You would think they know by now what to do in all situations, so what is the problem? Is it the 'head', that they still don't know how to organize, how to defend as a group, where to be positioned, In this case, we have a bunch of ignorant people. Or is it the 'heart', they can't be arsed to put the energy to doing their job.

Organisation

You can have four individual world class defenders but if they don’t work together they won’t work well. Similarly, you can have four average defenders and organise and train them well and they can perform ‘above’ their individual abilities.

Arsenal have a mix of decent to average defenders who show no organisation or tactical training, therefore they perform terribly. It’s that simple.

basically Arsenal is now a collection of over paid, pampered prima donnas who are not taught how to play together, given no incentive to play together and face no consequences should they play badly.

you only have to look at that video that Arsenal.com have put up for the new boy to see that it is now all about marketing and selling shirts.
whether a player can become part of a team to actually compete at the highest level is now irrelevant at Arsenal.

I refuse to contribute to any thread that spells defence like that!

Hell yeah our de-fense game is just so bad. Probably the worst in World Series soccer. You hear me Stan? You got me Ivan?

They need to use their heads and play with their hearts...not with their wallets and international team as their primary focus.

No team's defence should be judged in isolation. All eleven players need to play their part. If they're not, look to the coaching ....... and, what a surprise ..... we arrive at Wenger's door.

It's all about our weak spine. Cech needs to go and we need a world class keeper. Mustafi needs to go and we need a world class centre back and finally Xhaka needs to go and we need a midfielder who can tackle and pass.
Without those changes we will finish 6th next season as well.

No organisation or coaching from TOF (who doesn't allow Bould to coach) and absolutely no bottle, leadership or ingenuity from the players themselves.

Under TOF, the defence ran itself from 1996-06, thanks to TA6, Keown and Campbell. Then it was every man for himself. I doubt any of the defenders are doing any extra training on their own, as they would have done in the old days.

It really is the worst of both worlds :(
