Dear All

I appreciate that you will receive many letters requesting help for various charitable causes and that it is difficult to decide which to support. I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read my appeal and hope that you will consider my efforts, on behalf of others less fortunate than you and I, to be worthy of your support.

Since becoming severely disabled in 1991 as the result of a motor vehicle accident, I have had to re-evaluate my life. At that time, as a Leading Seaman Specialist in the Royal Navy, I was incredibly fit and led an active, full and privileged life, serving in both the Falklands and the first Gulf campaign, as well as competing in the Royal Naval Field Gun Crew.

The road to recovery remains long and difficult. Whilst I am mainly confined to a wheelchair and still suffer significant pain as a result of permanent brain damage and numerous physical disabilities, I find it helps greatly to concentrate a large proportion of my time in helping others, who I feel are less fortunate than myself. As such, over the past 4 years, I have helped raise in excess of £1,500,000 for local disabled children, the Teenage Cancer Trust, the Kiya survivors in Peru, Great Ormond Street Children’s Charity, and most recently when I raised £25,000 for Centrepoint for Youth Homelessness.

Despite my own difficulties, I have always had the love and support of family and friends. I have always had a roof over my head and food to eat and water to drink, famine is something I have never had to consider. As such, my next challenge will benefit Save the Children, the UK charity with a mission to end child deaths here in the UK and around the world.

In April 2012, with your help, I will commence my biggest challenge yet when I will self-propel my wheelchair, approximately 200 miles from Portland in Dorset, to the Emirates Stadium, London. The challenge will take 5 days and see me complete the equivalent of almost 8 marathons, 50 miles a day for the first 2 days and 30 miles a day for the last 3 days.

The money raised through my challenge will be used to help Save the Children with their fantastic work in over 120 countries worldwide including the UK. We will also be supporting 2 new projects ‘Families and Schools Together’ (FAST) programme, a range of education programmes in the UK and overseas to help the poorest children get a better start in life and give them the chance to grow and fulfil their potential. The FAST programme is an award winning, U.N endorsed programme.

The second project is ‘Eat, Sleep, Learn, Play (ESLP). The ESLP initiative, is a programme that assists children living in the most desperate need by providing household essentials like a child’s bed, a family cooker or educational books and toys.

RGK Wheelchairs are providing the lightweight wheelchair, Ridgeway Mercedes are supplying the support vehicle(s), with various companies and individuals sponsoring other equipment.

Whilst this challenge will leave me in significant pain and physical exhaustion for weeks, the difference I will be able to make in the life of others will more than compensate. I truly hope that you feel this is a worthy cause for your support. By supporting me, you will be supporting Save the Children and giving a young person in the UK and around the world a better chance in the future, which they may not otherwise get.

Good Morning Everyone

Welcome to the last update of September, how time flys. We hope you are enjoying this wonderful warm sunshine?

Last Thursday Paul was interview on Portsmouth Live TV(PLTV), and although Paul was not 100% the interview went very well and the people at PLTV were fantastic! This week training has been going really well, Paul is really pleased with his progress, struggling on some days but that's just because of the weight increase, which is expected when the weight you are lifting has been increased recently, however Paul is such a determined man nothing will put him off this challenge!

As you know Linvoy Primus is sponsoring the tracking system, supplied by Yellowbrick and the system has now been booked, thanks again to Linvoy.

There have been some very kind people working in the background for us, trying to sort out accommodation, we should know within 2/3 weeks what we will do.

Wightlink have kindly offered us for auction, a return ferry ticket for a car plus 4 passengers for a short break to the IOW (short break not included). We ask for bids to start at £120 please as this ticket is well worth it! Auction ends Friday 21st October 2011.

Next week we will announce another sponsor who we are 99% sure will join us onboard 'THE WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE', things are really starting to look up now so Paul can concentrate even more effort on his training.

Good Morning Everyone.

This week has seen some changes and exciting news all rolled into one!

The weather has changed and it looks like we are well and truly into Autumn, we hope you still have some sunshine as we do here in Portsmouth.

As usual Paul's training has gone very well and the statistics are mounting, as you know Paul had the remainder of May off and most of June but then started back to training in July. Conditioning training went reasonably well throughout July and in August the heavy weight training started with the amount of weight increasing, Paul is now lifting the maximum weight he can while keeping safety in mind because of his condition and injuries. Training has now be altered to avoid burnout and in preparation for the chair arriving next month, so as the excitement mounts we have more great news to share with you all.

On Monday we welcomed a new sponsor onboard,the new sponsor is London Camera Exchange (LCE), Southampton Civic Branch. LCE will be donating a new Nikon camera, which comes on the market in October/November and is worth around £700, this camera will go up for auction as of today and the auction will end on Friday 16th December, just in time of Christmas. We are pleased to welcome LCE onboard 'THE WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE' and thank them so much for their kind generosity.

Good Morning Everyone.

Week 3 of October and the sun is shinning here in Portsmouth.

We will start with correcting the information on the camera that we told you about last week. We have been informed that the actual value of the Nikon camera is £549.99 and not £700 as originally thought and the camera will be due out in November/December not October/November as advertised, either way it is still a geat camera and well worth a bid on, the latest bid is £175 at the moment.

We would like to thank the Milnes and Lamb families today, both are sponsoring Paul's special headbands, used to cushion the helmet head restraint, thank you for your kind generosity and welcome aboard 'THE WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE'.

Another good week for Paul, he's really enjoying himself and looking forward to the chair arriving from RGK in a few weeks time.

RGK are a world renowned wheelchair company who supply Team GB paralympian basketball team with their chairs and also other nations who will be in London at the 2012 paralympics next August. Shortly after arriving home last night from football in London, Arsenal 2 Sunderland 1, we received an email from a very generous lady, this lady has asked not to be mentioned. She wrote to inform us that she has sponsored our first 2 nights accommodation in Portland and in Bournemouth on a B&B basis, not only is this a generous offer but it has also lifted the morale of the team and more importantly it's lifted Paul's Morale! we would like to thank this lady so much for her kind generosity as it means that we are now two steps closer to the finish line!

Well after a good news at the beginning of the week we have had some more, which is very welcome because we have some frustrating news to report also.

First the good news, the same lady who has sponsored us for the first 2 nights accommodation has arranged for a free room for Paul and I at the Hilton Cobham on the 4th night and 3 double rooms at very heavily discounted rates, however we hope that someone will sponsor these and also the evening meals for all concerned.

We thank the lady concerned as she has been doing a lot of hard work in the background organising these things for us and all that is left now is sponsorship for the Hotel in Haslemere and the Friday night near Regents Park, so if anyone would like to help us on these as well as the evening meals at the first 2 hotels Sunday and Monday evenings and at the Hilton Cobham we would be very grateful indeed, we anticipate the cost for evening meals to be in the region of £500 for all eight of us for the 3 nights.

A cheque for £300 is to be sent to us as sponsorship from a new sponsor and we look forward to receiving that in due course, unfortunately post hasn't been delivered today so we can't announce who the sponsor is or whether the cheque is in that post.

Now for the frustrating news - Unfortunately Paul has tendonitis in his left elbow region, he has had this for a while, even when he did his last challenge but we didn't know just how bad it was. Unfortunately it means Paul has to rest but Paul being Paul has come to a compromise with the Osteopath and Sports Medicine specialist, a friend of ours, Paul Nelhams (BOst), Paul will reduce the amount of weight he is lifting or pushing, perform special stretching exercises on the affected area and apply ice every hour for 5 minutes each time. Fortunately Paul has Sunday off so that's a complete rest day from the gym. Everyone who knows Paul knows he's a fighter and will not give in to something like this so a compromise was the best our friend could do to prevent him causing irreparable damage and already it seems to be working although its frustrating Paul a great deal!

We hope that people don't think Paul does these fundraising challenges to impress people as this is not what he is trying to do, Paul simply enjoys fundraising and really enjoys taking on these challenges solely to raise funds for those who really need the help. Most of you know that Paul prefers to do the challenges then disappear into the background to work on the next, he has never sought praise for what he does or sympathy for his disabilities. We have accepted publicity solely for the purpose of raising awareness of each of the charities Paul has decided to support, not for himself, we are so very grateful for ALL the kindness, generosity and support we have received each and every time....THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Good Morning Everyone

Well that's October out of the way and we're now 4 days into November and as promised we have some news to report to you.

Training has gone well, Paul increased the weights slightly and there was only a slight twinge in the elbow, this a good sign but we remain ever cautious. We visited Paul Nelhams (The Hayling Osteopath) yesterday and he said that he was pleased that the elbow had settled down and advised Paul to continue increasing the amount of weight and continue with the stretching exercises and ice treatment.

Paul Nelhams is now officially a sponsor of Challenge 200, Paul will oversee any treatment Paul needs for this challenge. We will give you more information on The Hayling Osteopath next week.

RGK have informed us that the chair is almost ready and Paul is really looking forward to being reunited with 'THE WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE' again for another 1,000 miles plus road training and the 200 mile challenge. Paul has already covered over 800 miles on the rowing machine and hand bike machine since the beginning of September and a lot more in July and August, using arms only. We haven't calculated the amount of weight he has lifted but I can say its a lot!

Paul has some warm weather clothing courtesy of Parkwood Community Leisure, many thanks to them for their generosity again.

We are still looking for sponsorship for the Hotels in Haslemere and the Friday night near Regents Park, so if anyone would like to help with these please do get in touch.

While we reflect and remember those who gave everything in all wars and conflicts, this week has been a very good one, training has gone very well and we have 3 new sponsors of which we are very proud to be associated with.

Firstly the training. Paul has been putting his left elbow through it's paces and although still painful it appears to be in 'good working order', as he puts it. The Hayling osteopath will continue to work on the elbow over the coming weeks, while Paul continues to undo the good work that the Hayling osteopath does ha ha.
