gary sprake, dirty Leeds keeper when they were at their dirtiest. I remember him chinning Bobby Gould in front of the Clock End and only getting booked! When he came to the North Bank he collected a decent amount of loose change but took it humorously. Later he became a bit of a calamity keeper. 71 is no age these days.

I just read that entire piece, OneBard - and it is heartbreaking. Most people are aware of the disaster but that piece really brought home the human tragedy like nothing I've read on Aberfan before.

The NCB and the compensation commission were shameful in how they acted after the disaster.

When I get home from work tonight I'm giving my kids an extra big hug.

I so understand what you say. Mine are grown and flown the nest, but I phoned them both last night and told them I Love Them.

edit:I went to Aberfan some years later when I was grown to pay my respects, and there is a silence and an emptiness beneath what little everyday noises there are, it honestly feels as if the very heart of everyone and everything there is gone.

My next door neighbour was a police officer who was sent to Aberfan on that day. He has never returned to the town since.

like everyone else my two had an extra kiss and hug at bedtime.

I remember our primary school teacher explaining what had happened. We then had to all shelter under our desks in an emergency drill. I think it was a weird thing to make us do, but that day and the tragedy has stayed in my memory ever since. I remember that night seeing the harrowing pictures on the news. Even now, 50 years later, it's a terrible image.
