It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

Junior Doctors

Post by casgooner »

Will somebody please tell me what they are getting their stethoscopes in a twist about. I listen to them and their representatives on the news and I try to understand, but the argument seems to go around in circles!

Saying the Government are trying to cut their pay overall - which they are generally but it has been lost under constant propaganda and hysteria by the BMA under the bullshit guise of "patient safety".

I've yet to hear why they think people don't get seriously ill or need expert medical attention at the weekend. I've worked weekends since 1968 for a lot less remuneration than they get. I admire and respect the study and training that is required to become a doctor and the hours they have to work are ridiculous but they knew that going in. There must be another way for them to protest than standing outside a hospital acting like students in rag week.

I will back our Doctors and Nurses to the hilt. Good on them going on strike. Only one of a few professions. I believe deserve more. Jeremy Hunt by name Jeremy Hunt by nature.

The Politicians don't give a flying fuck about the NHS.

Interesting mentioning the nurses Rosie. Now there is a fucking thankless under-rewarded profession.

Long and inconvenient shifts (albeit total hours are pretty normal) and in between cleaning up shit and trying to deal with wards where a third of the patients have dementia with no specialist support, they get spoken to like complete turd by doctors, patients and families alike.

And all for a pretty meagre wage when you consider the stress of the job and the pressure they work under.

And do you know what demonstrates what a shit deal they get? The fact that they just cannot recruit nurses despite modest academic requirements. Unlike doctors and teachers where there is a massive surplus of capable people wanting to go into those professions.

Reality is it's much more attractive to work an easy 9-5 job larking about with mates for the same money as nursing. Whereas if you want the same sort of money as a doctor the alternative career for most would be working in a big professional services firm and climbing your way to the top. Which would involve probably longer hours, less generous ancillary benefits, infinitely less job security and financial risk, less respect and a far less personally rewarding vocation.

Look I don't think doctors pay should be cut - in fact they are paid worse than in other similarly-developed countries. And to an extent that is what's happening. That said they don't like pay transparency which is happening here - first year foundation doctors claim to earn 23k a year whereas the reality the majority will earn about 32-35k a year taking into account arbitrary 'banding' applied to each rotation, locum shifts paid at 40-50 quid an hour and 'ash cash' (not declared for income tax).

NHS employers can't afford to hike doctors pay packets because so much money is waste elsewhere on the NHs - particularly middle management. Doctors carry the can for bureaucrTic inefficiency elsewhere in the NhS but will be the first ones rallying against the nasty government at the hint of ANY cuts anywhere to the NHS.
