Homage to Catalonia

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

Homage to Catalonia

Post by Rugby Gooner »

They talked the talk.but couldn't walk the walk.
They bottled it on the brink of calling for their independence.
Spain now knows that they are all wind and piss, and the Ghost of Franco stalks the country.

I love Catalunya and would have moved there if it hadn't entailed learning two foreign languages. I've got Catalan friends, some are 'indepentistas' and others not. I don't know what the answer is, though the lesser of all the evils would probably be to change the Constitution and allow an official referendum. The downside is it would become a 'neverendum' and Pais Vasco, Valencia, Galicia etc would want a vote of their own.

I think that if a significant majority of Catalans wanted independence then they should be allowed it, but at the moment they don't. The Catalan Govt's own poll showed 41% in favour of independence and 49% against. Given that there is always a swing to the status quo when independence votes get near, the result is predictable. However, there should at least be proper campaigns and manifestos, with the difficult questions of EU membership, currency, state debt, armed forces, residency etc addressed.

The Catalan coalition may be left-wing, but Franco would be proud of their actions: manipulate the public, act violently towards any dissent, rig the vote so only your supporters vote, don't tell the people what will happen after they vote etc.

I think the Catalan govt saw the huge pro-Spain rally in Barcelona at the weekend, heard the views of Germany, France, Belgium and the EU, looked into the abyss, and backed away. I'm glad they did and I hope some peaceful solution can be found.

I love the place but I cannot stand Catalonians, for me they rate only just below white South Africans (Afrikaans) and German Swiss in a very close 1-2 there as the biggest *word censored* on the planet easily nudging out my previous 3rd place, French Canadians .
Arrogant, racist ,thieving twats is about the best thing I can say about them .
Huge stereotyping bordering on racism here from me ,and I'm happy to be proved wrong but my list is based on 40 years of business and travelling experience and I've met plenty of them !

That's putting it mildly, mate!

But tbh I've only ever known one white Soot Ofricaaaaan that was not a racist cúnt and that was young Nick who used to post on here!

I'm kidding of course, as there must be some that aren't - I just haven't met them yet - but I have met quite a few white SA peeps that were openly and proudly racist and that includes my aunt Deirdre's husband Bill The Racist - as he is known in our family... :x  I remember one white SA girl I interviewed years ago for a Play Police (Garda Reserve) job and she openly asked us right there in the interview if she would have to work with any "Blicks". When I asked her if that would be a problem (as a lot of newly arrived immigrants like the Polish and Nigerians etc join the Garda Reserve), she responded "yes". That word "yes" just dropped like a bomb in that interview room! After the interview I got talking with her out on the floor and asked her what she thought of living here and she said, and I quote, "Ireland is nice but you are letting too many blicks in, like we did in Soot Ofrica. They will ruin your country.". Fuck me, she did not do irony. Or history.

We failed the cúnt. 8)

I owned a 2 bedroom flat in Catalonia near Tarragona in the 90's ,place called Torredembarra .
Great location massive long beach with no one on it ,easy access to Barcalona or Salou for a night out massive modern funpark/water park within 15 mins drive .loads of flights to reus or barca in summer. and was very cheap.
Spent less time there as the kids got older sold it in 2001 , loved the place hated the people I met hence my comments ,they always seemed to try and rip you off as if it was their right !

You haven't met many Southern Americans have you? They'd be making your list for sure.

Agree with French Canadians though, that made me laugh.

Agreed, although I have to agree with the earlier stuff that saffers are basically all twats (and i've had the "pleasure" of working with them for 20+ years).
