Been revisiting my albums from back in the day and one that certainly stands the test of time is Argus by Wishbone Ash. One of the first prog albums? A total classic especially for would-be rock star guitarists.

Check out 'The King Will Come' which has one of the great intros and an absolutely killer riff. Play it loud and you'll be playing along on the first or second listen. Just awesome.

Yeah! I remember buying Argus... I love the cover as well, definitely Ash's Best Album... All the tracks just blend into one another...Oddly enough I've just recently re-learnt the (Acoustic) Intro to 'Time Was'... Fucking LOVE It! ... The twin guitars worked so well and the tone that Andy Powell got/ gets from his Gibson Flying V - Those high end gentle breaks he plays throughout the album are a Joy, especially his two short lead solo's in Leaf and Stream...What a Fucking Song ! Also some of the Bass riffs are colossal - I didn't used to like the Gibson Bass sound back then, but the sound Martin Turner gets on his bass for that album is like rumbling thunder...

Just a pity they had very poor Management (Miles Copeland - Who managed the Police - It's rumoured that when the Police started making waves he left W.Ash in the gutter with Huge Debts etc) And (Allegedly) literally stole their tour money; nothing unusual back then I know... But it caused all kinds of arguments within the band as they were working their asses off touring with nothing to show when they got home, also leading to houses being re-possessed and families being affected etc . The follow up Wishbone Four is good but not a patch on Argus.... I remember going to see them in the Top Rank in Reading when they were touring with Wishbone 4 - and they played about two thirds of Argus.

Also Stand Out tracks are: F.U.B.B (Fucked Up Beyond Belief) from 'There's The Rub' in all honesty there's only two decent tracks on that album/FUBB and 'Silver Lady' - The latter has a 'feel' of Argus about it. Their best album after those weird years is New England - Some gorgeous Bass riffs and Amazing Guitar work; with Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield; who replaced the departing Ted Turner.

Argus is a Great Album though 100%. 8)

Thanks OBG that's some great info there and I will check out your recommended two tracks for sure.

Nice to see on this thread there must be people about my age if you bought Argus when it came out! FFS, I have just got my letter about my state pension. I don't mind getting the extra grand a month but I do object to being the age to get it. Hey-ho.

I remember the albums I bought around that time, Queen 2, Crime of the Century, Rick W's Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Dark Side of the Moon ...those were the days when everyone bought different albums and you recorded them on a Memorex C90 (with Dolby!!) in the cassette deck of your music centre, complete with its with record player and FM/AM radio...or if you didn't run to that, your Philips Cassette Recorder. Always annoyed me when an album was longer than 45 minutes, because it obviously just cut. There are still songs I hear which I expect to cut before they finish!

Apologies  I meant to say 'Former' not latter: it is F.U.B.B That is the track that could have easily fitted into Argus, the whole mood, sound and feel of it (No Vocals) really do sound as if it were recorded at the same time (as Argus) .... some awesome guitar playing and the Bass is incredible ... get ready for a surprise ending!

It's funny but I could never get into Queen, I remember their single (45rpm) 'Seven Seas Of Rye' charting, but they were a band that just never caught my attention.... I remember very well the day Dark Side was released by Floyd. The album had been given a public airing: the album on a huge sound system at the Planetarium in London for journalists / music hacks (Sounds, Melody Maker & NME) there week before and of course the rumours ran wild, I had been ill with Flu but went to my local record shop on the Monday morning - which was when all new releases went on sale back then... Still got the original vinyl with the Poster and the Post cards... I saw them when they only did 8 UK Gigs to promote the album before they jetted off on their huge US Tour... I was already 'into' them - with Atom Heart Mother (my favourite Floyd album) and Umma Gamma (Dble LP) ...

I can still remember that Summer (72 or 73? - Sorry getting old) when I played W.Ash (Argus), Tubular Bells (Mike Oldfield ) and The Yes Album (Yes) day & night till it drove my old man nuts :D

Sigh! Those Really were the days... Queuing out all night to get tickets for gigs: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Focus, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath ...Sabbath were staying at the local posh hotel, so me and 3 mates went there after the gig and snuck in via the Kitchens at the back, Geezer, Bill Ward and their manager were in the bar and bought us drinks till 1am in the morning ... we left pissed out of our heads.. :D :-P

Yeah ! I remember taping albums for my mates and vice versa ..... Rock On! :D :barscarf:

Mate, so many great memories in your previous note. Genesis were my favourite band in the 70s, and one of the few who genuinely maintained their quality over the years, even after PG left. My fave album ever is still Lamb Lies Down, but I will happily listen to We Can't Dance too! I love Marillion, always negatively compared to Genesis, but albums like Misplaced Childhood and Marbles (the extended one, with Ocean Cloud) stand scrutiny.

Probably get drummed off this thread by saying my favourite track off Foxtrot is not Supper's Ready but Can-Utility! However, on a more cultural level, I did read the Book of Revelations in the New Testament to get the references in SR!! Steve Hackett does a wonderful version of Can-Utility, and coincidentally lives 100 yards from me in SW London in a modest semi, thanks apparently to several expensive divorces....

Favourite Floyd albums probably The Wall and was at the original Earls Court concerts, but The Final Cut also a very fine work. But maybe Echoes is my fave track.

These days, have moved on a bit, and backwards, as have to say that Bob Dylan rules supreme in my eyes. Is there really a better song than 'Don't Think Twice, It's Alright'? Not sure. Jokerman, off Infidels runs it close. But so many others too.

My guilty pleasure is the Quo. Saw them many times, and they are so underrated melodically. Rick Parfitt also lived around the corner from me and drove a blue Aston Martin reg SKY 42, well that was 'Blue for You' in my eyes!!

Happy days!!

Wow!... :D

I remember when Yes were touring (UK) with the Topographic Oceans (Dble) album - Weirdly the album came out After the tour... :? and Genesis were also touring with The Lamb, lucky enough to get to see both within Months of one another - Again it was an All Nighter when me and a mate queued over night (Hammersmith Odeon) to get ticket for both; back then The Plod would try and 'move you on' - But ended up stopping for a chat at 4am when all the bovver had subsided outside the clubs etc... I even remember sharing our flask of coffee and our biscuits with a newbie plod... His name was Andrew and we actually saw him at a Jethro Tull gig about 4 months later; he had quit the plod and was studying Art at college  And we went for a couple of pints after the gig, it turns out someone had done a cassette tape of Genesis and that was the beginning of the end (of being a trainee plod) so to speak..Back then Roger Dean (of Yes Art Cover fame) used to teach one day a week at whatever Art College he was attending I think it might have been Goldsmith's (?) And Andrew got his album cover of 'Close To The Edge' signed by him...luck fucker!

.... it's a funny old world innit! :D

Yes, I thought Genesis would fall apart when Gabriel announced his leaving (remember that strange letter(*) he sent to all the music papers of the day explaining why? he had quit) (*) For Gabriel it was anything BUT "Strange" :D

Saw him on his first UK Solo Tour with Tony Levin (on Bass, Chapman Stick - we were all blown away by the sound of that thinking WTF is That! - He also played the Tuba!... Gabriel was one of the first to use a Radio Mic... I remember the lights going down and then all pandemonium breaking loose at the back of the concert hall - Then there is one single spot light carried by a roadie as PG scrambled and clambered over the rows of seats as he is singing the opening lines of 'Moribund the Burgermeister' - with that weird melody and sound effect... the whole place went Absolutely Fucking Mental - He was stopping every few rows to give the mic to fans... I still have a badge I bought at the Gig! sigh! - Amazingly he didn't play ANY Genesis songs - But the concert was Brilliant ! - And when they played 'Solisbury Hill' - They did like a 15 minute version I thought the building was going to collapse

Memories Huh!? :?

Surprisingly one of my fave Genesis albums besides 'Selling England By The Pound" is Wind & Withering - Especially 'Blood On The Rooftops' - Which I have tried learning numerous times...and Eleventh Earl of Mar... What a Fuckin' Bass Riff in that little beauty!

Talking of Prog Rock.... Have you ever listened to "Ra" by Todd Rundgren's "Utopia" (The name he gave the band) - Released in the Mid 70's (76 I think?) - I know he is best known for his Classy Poppish "Something/Anything" album... But seriously "Ra" is fuckin Awesome! me and 3 mates went to see him at The Bristol Hippodrome (he was touring the album) And truly we were Blown Away''' - I still get Goode bumps when I remember the show opening with a Blast of Lights! and the Opening to the album: "Overture"

Check it out! Play it LOUD! On Headphones

....aaaaand.... :D

Yes Dylan is "Special" A true Visionary and Poet... Saw him at Blackbushe (Open air) years ago an old Aerodrome... so atmosphere was somewhat lacking! We could barely see the stage... Must admit I was a tad disappointed...the weather etc was (thankfully) good... can't recall the full line-up/support Joan Armatrading...I do recall Eric Clapton being a 'special guest'...But ended up getting shit faced and standing in a queue for almost an hour for Burger and Chips only to get to the counter and be informed it was a T-Shirt Stand  :-P  :cussing:

I have recently been listening to Disc 2 of his album "Rough and Rowdy ways".... a 20 minute track all about the JFK Assassination ... Might sound bleak but I find it 'inspiring'... My older brother was a BIG Dylan fan, so I was aware of him Blonde on Blonde etc , but I didn't get into his music till mid 80's ... and so I am more familiar with 'Blood on the Tracks' and "Desire"

I lean more towards Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne... who for me are the best of the Troubadours of more modern times...

The Pure Genius of Bob Dylan:

Murder Most Foul:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NbQkyvbw18

Twas a dark day in Dallas, November '63
A day that will live on in infamy
President Kennedy was a-ridin' high
Good day to be livin' and a good day to die
Being led to the slaughter like a sacrificial lamb
He said, "Wait a minute, boys, you know who I am?"
"Of course we do, we know who you are"
Then they blew off his head while he was still in the car
Shot down like a dog in broad daylight
Was a matter of timing and the timing was right
You got unpaid debts, we've come to collect
We're gonna kill you with hatred, without any respect
We'll mock you and shock you and we'll put it in your face
We've already got someone here to take your place
The day they blew out the brains of the king
Thousands were watchin', no one saw a thing
It happened so quickly, so quick, by surprise
Right there in front of everyone's eyes
Greatest magic trick ever under the sun
Perfectly executed, skillfully done
Wolfman, oh Wolfman, oh Wolfman, howl
Rub-a-dub-dub, it's a murder most foul

Hush, little children, you'll understand
The Beatles are comin', they're gonna hold your hand
Slide down the banister, go get your coat
Ferry 'cross the Mersey and go for the throat
There's three bums comin' all dressed in rags
Pick up the pieces and lower the flags
I'm goin' to Woodstock, it's the Aquarian Age
Then I'll go to Altamont and sit near the stage
Put your head out the window, let the good times roll
There's a party goin' on behind the Grassy Knoll
Stack up the bricks, pour the cement
Don't say Dallas don't love you, Mr. President
Put your foot in the tank and step on the gas
Try to make it to the triple underpass
Blackface singer, whiteface clown
Better not show your faces after the sun goes down
I'm in the red-light district, like a cop on the beat
Livin' in a nightmare on Elm Street
When you're down in Deep Ellum, put your money in your shoe
Don't ask what your country can do for you
Cash on the barrelhead, money to burn
Dealey Plaza, make a left-hand turn
I'm goin' down to the crossroads, gonna flag a ride
The place where faith, hope, and charity died
Shoot him while he runs, boy, shoot him while you can
See if you can shoot the invisible man
Goodbye, Charlie, goodbye, Uncle Sam
Frankly, Miss Scarlet, I don't give a damn
What is the truth, and where did it go?
Ask Oswald and Ruby, they oughta know
"Shut your mouth, " said the wise old owl
Business is business, and it's a murder most foul

Tommy, can you hear me? I'm the Acid Queen
I'm riding in a long, black Lincoln limousine
Riding in the backseat next to my wife
Heading straight on in to the afterlife
I'm leaning to the left, I got my head in her lap
Hold on, I've been led into some kind of a trap
Where we ask no quarter, and no quarter do we give
We're right down the street from the street where you live
They mutilated his body and they took out his brain
What more could they do? They piled on the pain
But his soul's not there where it was supposed to be at
For the last fifty years they've been searchin' for that
Freedom, oh freedom, freedom over me
I hate to tell you, mister, but only dead men are free
Send me some lovin', tell me no lies
Throw the gun in the gutter and walk on by
Wake up, little Suzie, let's go for a drive
Cross the Trinity River, let's keep hope alive
Turn the radio on, don't touch the dials
Parkland hospital, only six more miles
You got me dizzy, Miss Lizzy, you filled me with lead
That magic bullet of yours has gone to my head
I'm just a patsy like Patsy Cline
Never shot anyone from in front or behind
Got blood in my eye, got blood in my ear
I'm never gonna make it to the new frontier
Zapruder's film, I've seen that before
Seen it thirty-three times, maybe more
It's vile and deceitful, it's cruel and it's mean
Ugliest thing that you ever have seen
They killed him once and they killed him twice
Killed him like a human sacrifice
The day that they killed him, someone said to me, "Son
The age of the Antichrist has just only begun"
Air Force One comin' in through the gate
Johnson sworn in at 2:38
Let me know when you decide to throw in the towel
It is what it is, and it's murder most foul

What's new, pussycat? What'd I say?
I said the soul of a nation been torn away
And it's beginning to go into a slow decay
And that it's thirty-six hours past Judgment Day
Wolfman Jack, he's speaking in tongues
He's going on and on at the top of his lungs
Play me a song, Mr. Wolfman Jack
Play it for me in my long Cadillac
Play me that, "Only The Good Die Young"
Take me to the place Tom Dooley was hung
Play, "St. James Infirmary" and, "The Port of King James"
If you want to remember, you better write down the names
Play Etta James, too, play "I'd Rather Go Blind"
Play it for the man with the telepathic mind
Play John Lee Hooker, play "Scratch My Back"
Play it for that strip club owner named Jack
Guitar Slim going down slow
Play it for me and for Marilyn Monroe

Play, "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"
Play it for the First Lady, she ain't feeling any good
Play Don Henley, play Glenn Frey
Take it to the limit and let it go by
Play it for Carl Wilson, too
Looking far, far away down Gower Avenue
Play, "Tragedy" play, "Twilight Time"
Take me back to Tulsa to the scene of the crime
Play another one and, "Another One Bites the Dust"
Play, "The Old Rugged Cross" and, "In God We Trust"
Ride the pink horse down that long, lonesome road
Stand there and wait for his head to explode
Play, "Mystery Train" for Mr. Mystery
The man who fell down dead like a rootless tree
Play it for the Reverend, play it for the Pastor
Play it for the dog that got no master
Play Oscar Peterson, play Stan Getz
Play, "Blue Sky", play Dickey Betts
Play Hot Pepper, Thelonious Monk
Charlie Parker and all that junk
All that junk and, "All That Jazz"
Play something for the Birdman of Alcatraz
Play Buster Keaton, play Harold Lloyd
Play Bugsy Siegel, play Pretty Boy Floyd
Play the numbers , play the odds
Play, "Cry Me A River" for the Lord of the gods
Play Number Nine, play Number Six
Play it for Lindsey and Stevie Nicks
Play Nat King Cole, play, "Nature Boy"
Play, "Down In The Boondocks" for Terry Malloy
Play, "It Happened One Night" and, "One Night of Sin"
There's twelve million souls that are listening in
Play, "Merchant to Venice" play, "Merchants of Death"
Play, "Stella by Starlight" for Lady Macbeth
Don't worry, Mr. President, help's on the way
Your brothers are coming, there'll be hell to pay
Brothers? What brothers? What's this about hell?
Tell them, "We're waiting, keep coming"
We'll get them as well
Love Field is where his plane touched down
But it never did get back up off the ground
Was a hard act to follow, second to none
They killed him on the altar of the rising sun
Play, "Misty" for me and, "That Old Devil Moon"
Play, "Anything Goes" and, "Memphis in June"
Play, "Lonely At the Top" and, "Lonely Are the Brave"
Play it for Houdini spinning around his grave
Play Jelly Roll Morton, play, "Lucille"
Play, "Deep In a Dream" and play "Driving Wheel"
Play, "Moonlight Sonata" in F-sharp
And, "A Key To The Highway" for the king of the harp
Play, "Marching Through Georgia" and, "Dumbaroton's Drums"
Play, "Darkness" and death will come when it comes
Play, "Love Me Or Leave Me" by the great Bud Powell
Play, "The Blood-stained Banner" play, "Murder Most Foul"
