I went to the Stuttgart vs Mainz game at the Mercedes Benz arena on Saturday 07th April. I made it a goal of mine to attend a Bundesliga game this season.
Firstly, the standing behind the goal at the home end (lower tier only at Stuttgart), improves the atmosphere out of all recognition. I watched the Dortmund vs Bayern game on Wedneasday in a local pub in Bamberg. The home end of Dortmund is heaving.
However, the atmosphere in other parts of the ground, or at least in the part of the ground where I had a seat in Stuttgart, was not a lot better than you have at the upper tier of the Emitrates. Any time I have had a tkt in the lower tier the atmosphere has been slightly better than the upper.
Thirdly, how do you manage to enjoy the game with a 0.5 litre of the local brew in your hand? The answer is German efficiency - between each row of seats they have a small railing. The container that holds the drink has a handle - you simply put the handle over the railing.
I will be going to another game in the Bundesliga next season. Not made up my mind what city yet. One thing is for certain - whatever club it is will see me investing in more Krombacher. Cheers.

Been to a few games in Germany & luckily got to stand on the Sudtribune at Dortmund a few months back, it was fuckin' excellent. Pretty much the perfect football stadium setup in my opinion. Atmosphere was great & the ST i borrowed to get into the home end had the price printed on it; €219 or £180

Ive been to a few German games and they have been terrific. Best one I went to was last season, I went to see St Pauli v Leverkusen. I was in the terraced end, with the St Pauli hardcore fans who (I am not joking) sang non stop for 90 mins. They even had two guys with megaphones who sat with their back to the pitch all game and all they did was encourage the fans to sing the ticket was 40 EUR (from a tout) with a face value of 10 EUR, you could drink in the stand (as well as smoke and there were loads of people smoking weed as well). Plus they have lots of counter culture rituals - at one point, people passed around bin bags with ripped up pieces of paper that you just chucked around ??? the excitement was too much and someone next to me actually fainted... but the ambulance soon got her out... and the whole experience was just brilliant. Shitty ground (probably the worst I've been to, and I lived in York for 3 yrs at uni and watched York City who were 3rd div at the time) but the atmos was brilliant and the whole day was a great experience.

My german is pretty much non existant but I've tried to buy a ticket online from the Bayern and St Pauli sites and, as far as I was aware, although maybe I was looking in the wrong place, you had to request a ticket by post or become a member of the club for a fee which wasn't worth it for a one off trip. I've been to Milan and they were selling tickets on the day because they rarely fill the ground except for derbies and big champions league games but I doubt this would be an option at the Bundesliga which I believe is the best supported league in Europe.

Majority of German games go to General Sale so you can buy online or on the day for clubs that don't sell out their stadiums. Touting is also legal in Germany so you can buy off other fans around the ground, at the U-Bahn station etc.

Just a quick note - I think it is unlikely that for stadiums in, for example, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen or Cologne, that you will find standing tickets available in the general sale.
