Challenge 300

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Training is going well, donations are coming in and we have most of our sponsors. Unfortunately Paul is not allowed to collect inside or outside the stadium anymore because Arsenal have become a Charitable Foundation, although Paul is still doing the challenges for at least one of the Arsenal charities. Please support Paul and this next 300 miles challenge, just a £1 donation from each supporter in the stadium will soon get us to the £50,000 target! You can make donations by visiting http://www.justgiving.com/challenge300, or by texting Code: OVQV87 and your amount to 70070 i.e OVQV87 £1 to number 70070. Thank you for your kind support!!!

Best Wishes

Latest update:

Training started on the 23rd July and to date has gone very well, Paul is well up on the amount of weight he is lifting and he is taking a different approach to his training this time around. For obvious reasons the gym exercises have been modified and Paul is extremely careful on how he lifts weights. Road training hasn't officially started but on Sunday 26th August he got bored and decided that the only way to tackle boredom was to go training. He took on some road training along Hilsea Creek and also took on some off road training around North Harbour to test out the newly modified freewheel.

Generally he is doing 2 miles on the track and 8 miles on the hand bike in the gym as well as heavy weights and training is up to 4 days a week now!

Sponsorship:

Sponsorship is going very, very well so far, we are pleased to have the continued sponsorship of RGK Wheelchairs, who although they have given Paul the chair to keep, Russel Simms of RGK has said that they will continue to support Paul in whatever way they can. Kevin Downham of Pentagon Mercedes/Ridgeway Group was also keen to support Paul and will be supplying the Support car and the Support van for Challenge 300. CTC are onboard again by supplying the route and Paul's training facilities are again being sponsored by Parkwood Community Leisure at the Mountbatten Centre Portsmouth. Arsenal Hampshire are again sponsoring supplies for the challenge and we are really grateful to Steve and Terry for their support once again and of course we are grateful to Barry North of the Sussex Hand Cycling Association for the loan of his recumbent from February until end of April 2013, without him we'd be stuck. We are so grateful to you all, you are regarded as friends and your support is fantastic and kind!

Good news, summer has been very busy for much welcomed new sponsors, we would like to welcome the following new sponsors onboard 'THE WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE'.

Coffinmew Solicitors, Ray Cobb was kind enough to respond positively to our request for sponsorship and Coffinmew will be sponsoring Paul's training kit and waterproofs. Peter Sherlow of Hughes and Salvidge also replied to us positively and are now sponsoring Paul's energy drinks and gels. We had a kind reply from Mike Paget, owner of Solent Cycles and they are the sponsors of Paul's road safety equipment, lights, helmet and high vis jacket. Proptech were also keen to help Paul and the crew and are sponsors of the water for the challenge, we were welcomed by Alistair Mant at the Proptech workshops and had a tour of the establishment. Trac Trac will be our new tracking system sponsors, Adrian Whaley was only too keen to support us with his tracking system, which will be up and running from 09:30m on the 7th April 2013. Fyffes are supporting Paul by supplying him with their bananas and some fruit which is very important during his training.

We welcome each and everyone one of our new sponsors, Paul said that having met you all, he found you to be kind and very pleasant people to know and we couldn't wish for better support, thank you so much for everything and we look forward to working with you all!

We are hopeful of having more sponsors join us in the coming months, we cannot reveal who they are because we cannot commit them but we hope they will join the many sponsors/supporters and help get Paul to London from Plymouth in April 2013.

Most of you are already aware of the kind of person Paul is, he does his challenges to help those who are far worse off than he, he puts himself through gruelling training sessions day after day and then takes on these amazing challenges, which in themselves would put most of us to shame. The target is to raise £50,000 for Save the Children, both here in the UK and around the world, if you know of any companies that may like to join us and sponsor Paul and the crew or make a donation to Save the Children via Challenge 300 please tell them of us and tell them of Paul's story.

If you are a company who is already sponsoring us and want to do more to help raise funds, we welcome your ideas and are keen to become involved. We have had A5 flyers designed by David Hoyle, DH Design (02392 383197) and printed by Save the Children Volunteer Support, if you think you can hand some out then please let us know, we will drop some off to you.

We also have some raffle tickets, they are just £5 for a book of 5 tickets and first prize is 4 nights in two of Hong Kong's top 5 star hotels plus flights in Hong Kong Airlines Club Class. You will spend 2 nights in the Hyatt Regency and 2 nights in the Grand Hyatt, again we have books of tickets available please let us know if you want some.

We still need sponsorship for the following:

Evening meals for 8 people for all hotels- £1200

Fuel for 3 cars, which includes our journey to Plymouth - £500

Paul's special high energy diet from October til April - £600

2 hotels, one in Plymouth - £450 each hotel

We want to thank Mr Ken Friar OBE and staff at Arsenal for their help in challenges past, it's been great working with you.

Finally a big, big thank you to our support crew because without them Paul just wouldn't be able to do these challenges, Lead by Shaun Johnstone the crew have been professional and great fun to be with (especially after 4 O'clock), we look forward to working with them again. For Challenge 300 we have 2 new crew members, David Aylieff-Sansom of Middle of the road Photography, David will be our official photographer for the challenge and also Trevor Arrow who is replacing his brother Phil. Welcome to both of you.

Special thanks to those of you who have supported us in past and who still wish to continue to support us in the coming challenge.

This is going to be an amazing challenge and the run up to it will no doubt keep you amazed by the sheer determination of one man who selflessly wants to help others have a better life, thank you for your support and please pass on the word. Don't forget that you can keep up to date by visiting our facebook and twitter pages. Thank you.

Hi Everyone

Welcome to the second update of Challenge 300, as you can see we have our logo at the top of the page, designed by our promotions manager, Vanessa.

Training:

Training as usual has gone well, Paul is putting in the hours and the weights are being thrown around like tissue paper, we are now up to 4 days training a week and Paul is enjoying every minute of it! Paul started some road training along Hilsea Creek and also around North Harbour last week and has continued that this week, I feel he is itching to get on the roads full time but discipline is a must and gym work must be his priority until November/December.

Events: We were to have a 60's night on the 22nd September in aid of Save the Children but unfortunately there are many people on well deserved holidays so we have had to cancel this event, an alternative date will be considered and we will keep you posted.

Sponsors:

We have paid a visit to a potential sponsor but nothing is concrete so we are still hoping that those who have shown interest and who have spoken to Paul or any of the crew will still sponsor us so we can tie up the loose ends, the list of remaining items that we require sponsorship is below.

Evening meals for 8 people for all hotels- £1200

Fuel for 3 cars, which includes our journey to Plymouth - £500

Paul's special high energy diet from October til April - £600

2 hotels, one in Plymouth - £450 each hotel.

News: You may have seen recently on the news that children and families in poverty in the UK has grown significantly and Save the Children are the front runner in exposing this fact. It is our intention that ALL funds raised from Challenge 300 through your kind donations will go to this project and we hope that the Eat, Sleep, Learn, Play programme will continue to expand. Please help wherever you can by spreading the news about Challenge 300. Thank you.

Raffle Tickets: We have raffle tickets on sale £5 for a book of 5, Yes that's right only £5. First prize is 4 days in Hong Kong. You will fly in Hong Kong Airways' all new chic club class service with 2 bars and spacious cabins with fine dinning from Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton. You will then stay in 2 stylish five star hotels, the Hyatt Regency and the Grand Hyatt. Wow! Not bad for spending one of those redundant blue notes that you may have in your pocket, purse or wallet. So why not give it a try buy a book from us and see if you're the lucky winner of the fabulous first prize! Thank you.

Current Sponsors:
