The amount of support from Arsenal fans at the Emirates or out and about has been fantastic, last night a company in Winchester, where some employees are Arsenal fans have promised to donate £250 when Paul finishes Challenge 300 in April. We are, like others, are not allowed to collect inside or outside the Stadium anymore but we will be collecting away from the Stadium so if you see Paul with his bucket please stop him and drop a few pence/pounds in it. Thank you for your kind support for the kids in the UK.

Good morning everyone.

Welcome to your first update of October, there are quite a few things to mention in this edition so I will move on. We hope that you have a chance to read all of the email as there are some interesting details for you, especially the news about our newest sponsors. Thank you.

Training:

Training is going well, Paul is losing weight as planned and the chasing dogs are on the increase. Since last writing, Paul increased some of the weights in the gym and all is good there, his speed work is going well although the rain and wind has increased along with it. The dogs seem to like Paul in his chair and continue to give chase, Paul says ' It's good training, makes me push faster ha ha'.

Events: We are collecting at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth on 24th November 2012, 19th January and 5th March 2013. If anyone would like to come along and help out for a few hours we would welcome you with open arms.

Sponsors:

We are still looking for sponsors for the items below so if you know of anyone who can help us with these last but important things please let them know about us. Thank you.

Evening meals for 8 people for all hotels- £1200

Fuel for 3 cars, which includes our journey to Plymouth - £500

Paul's special high energy diet from October til April - £600 - ASDA are helping with some of this.

1 hotel, in Haslemere - £450.

Good News: Just after we sent you last weeks update, we received an email from the general manager of Jurys Inn, Plymouth, Graham Hole , Graham has informed us that "it would be a pleasure for Jurys Inn, Plymouth to sponsor Paul and the crew 4 rooms", so our Plymouth accommodation is now covered thanks to Graham and Jurys Inn. E&J Fund Management of Winchester have pledged £250 to Save the Children once Paul has completed Challenge 300 in April, this is great news which takes us over the £1,000 mark. We'd like to thank both Graham and E&J Fund Management for their kindness and support!

We also thank Global leather for supplying Paul's gloves and accessories as we just couldn't find gloves anywhere, Sharon May of Global Leather came to the rescue. Thank you for your kind support Sharon and all at Global leather!

We now have our new medical supplies for Challenge 300, hopefully we won't need to use any of it except the conforming bandages that Paul uses under his wrist supports to help strengthen those areas.

Trac Trac UK are sponsoring our tracking system they are based in Swanage, Dorset. Trac Trac UK supply their tracking system to the sailing world and other great sporting events, Paul first met the Director of Trac Trac UK, Adrian Whaley, at the Sail for Gold event earlier this year. Adrian was keen to help and we are delighted to have Adrian and Trac Trac UK onboard the 'WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE' for Challenge 300.

Good afternoon everyone.

Welcome to November and the first update of the month, we have some really good news in the news section and we are finishing the week on a high. We said we would send photos with this edition but because of other commitments we haven't had time to edit them so we will send them in next weeks update. Thank you.

Training:

Sunday saw Paul with increased pressure in his brain, this one was a big episode and Paul was awake all through Sunday night. Monday morning he was off training as usually determined not to allow his disability to get the better of him, after training he said that he felt better and enjoyed the session and by Monday evening he was completely recovered, so he said. The rest of the weeks training went well, we have changed the routine slightly and Paul now trains 6 days a week, we are now entering a period where the gym work is all the more important as Paul closes in on road training. There have been no incidents with dogs or vehicles this week, lets hope it stays that way.

Good morning everyone.

Edition 2 of the November update. Equipment failure, shoulder strain reports in the training section and more on the Save the Children fundraiser in the events section make interesting news to read. We attach a few photos from last week just to give you a flavour of gym training, other photos of training will be sent out in the coming weeks, once Peter has returned from his luxury holiday in Tuscany ha ha. As you guessed photos are by Peter Rococholli ARPS.

We would like to thank Micky and Mel Tume for taking a collection at the Plymouth Bus Station Club on Sunday 4th November, we'd also like to thank Alistair Mant for selling Save the Children raffle tickets for the draw on December 10th.

Training:

The week started with a bang, Paul was out of the starting blocks with a really good training session, with much the same on Tuesday then came the disasters on Wednesday, one after the other. While out in the chair a bolt on the Freewheel snapped halfway into the creek run (very expensive repair), undeterred Paul limped home with the Freewheel on his lap but couldn't go too fast as one of the small wheels on the chair is buckled. Having arrived back at the gym Paul carried on with his training session and finished the 2 hour gym session very pleased. After showering and a cup of tea Paul was moving himself back in to his chair when all of a sudden his left should gave way, Paul now has a muscle strain in the shoulder which is causing some considerable pain. Now most of you know Paul by now and his determination to carry on, his answer to the muscle issue is to get on with training and this he did, back in the gym yesterday he put himself through the usual gruelling session. Yesterday afternoon Paul had his sports massage with the shoulder being worked on and things appear to be ok but we'll see on Monday if he has overcome the injury. Training goes on as usual today!

Sponsors needed for items below:

We are still looking for sponsors for the items below so if you know of anyone who can help us with these last but important things please let them know about us. Thank you.

Evening meals for 8 people for all hotels- £500.

1 hotel, in Haslemere.

News:

Paul and Shaun went to Plymouth on Saturday and were given a warm welcome by the staff at Jurys Inn where we will be staying the night before the challenge. On Sunday they carried out a dry run of the route between Plymouth and Portsmouth to identify medical check points and places to pull over and let traffic pass. There are plenty of laybys on the A38 and A30 from Plymouth to Honiton but very little between Honiton and Dorchester on the second day, Paul and Shaun anticipate that day 2 will be the most difficult as the hills are very steep and there very few places to change chairs, this will make this part of the route extremely difficult indeed. There is to be a small change in the route from Poole to Christchurch but other than that things went well.

Preparations for the collection day at Gunwharf Quays are underway for what is to be an exciting event.

We would just like to mention that if you wish to make a small donation to Save the Children anonymously, you can send in a text. You can text OVQV87 and your amount to 70070 i.e OVQV87 £1 to number 70070. Thank you.

Events: We confirm that the Save the Children fundraiser will be at the Piranha Bar , Sparkes Marina, Hayling Island 7pm 'til midnight on Saturday 9th February. The tickets are priced at an affordable £20 each, this will include a Jazz/Blues singer and her backing band and a buffet with lobster etc, there will be a chance to dance as well. We will also be holding a top prize raffle and there is a short quiz game where the winner will receive a bottle of champagne. Why not come along and have a great night and in the process help raise funds for Save the Children! TICKETS ARE GOING FAST SO IF YOU WANT SOME PLEASE GET IN TOUCH! Contact Ray Acland on 07768796363 or Paul on 07796595432 for tickets, Paul can also arrange b&b for you if you would like to stay over after the event.

Current Sponsors: Middle of the Road Photography are back with us again, David Aylieff-Sansom is the sole owner of this company and did a great job for us on the first day of Challenge 200 but unfortunately had to depart at the end of the day because of prior commitments. you can see David's excellent work at www.motrp.co.uk or phone 07989283240 - 0159 688442. Thank you David and welcome back to the crew.

CTC are back with us again and we are please that Andy Hawes has helped us with the route. without him we would struggle. CTC are the club to join if you are a keen cyclist as they provide routes of great cycle touring holidays around the UK and abroad. you can find CTC at www.ctc.org.uk or call 0844 736 8450/ 01483 238 337.

Here we are with update number 3 for November. After a frustrating week last week we have better news from all quarters, read on to find out about how training has gone and information on buying our fundraiser event tickets.

Can you help us raise £50,000 by sponsoring Paul please?

Training:

On Friday we received an email from Barry North who is loaning Paul the recumbent chair, Barry informed us that he was moving to South Wales on Wednesday so plans were rapidly changed and we picked up the chair on Sunday 2.5 months ahead of the originally planned date. The chair is a real beast and Paul is looking forward to testing it out in a the next few weeks. The recumbent chair is needed to help us move through areas that the police have requested we move through as quickly as possible as we may cause long tail backs, these areas are also accident black spots. Photo of the beast (as Paul calls it) will be sent out next week.

After a tough week last week to say the least, Paul was back in the saddle on Monday putting his left shoulder to the test, he found it to be sore but manageable and continues on regardless. On Monday Mike Paget of Solent Cycles attached a tachometer to the chair unfortunately the one that was donated failed to work so out of the goodness of his heart Mike attached one from his shop, this is the kind of generosity that Mike has shown throughout his sponsorship of Paul and we are eternally grateful. On Tuesday the Freewheel was finally repaired by JBL Wheelchairs of Littlehampton and Paul soon put it through its paces on Wednesday. The rest of the week has been good, Paul is now back in his stride and working as hard as ever. Thank you for your messages of support during the last week, they mean a lot and certainly gave Paul that extra boost! Neil, Paul's trainer is back from his luxury holiday in South Africa ha ha and both he and Paul will be training together today which does make a difference when you have someone training with you.

URGENT Sponsors needed for items below:

We are still looking for sponsors for the items below so if you know of anyone who can help us with these last but important things please let them know about us. Thank you.

Evening meals for 8 people for all hotels- £500.

1 hotel, in Haslemere.

News:

With the planned route changed in some areas and letters to the police authorities sent out we have moved a step closer to the challenge but between now and then we have 3 collection dates at Gunwharf Quays and a fundraiser to attend, which we are looking forward to and in between all that Paul has his road training to get on with. The collection dates are 24th November, 19th January and 5th March.

Events: We confirm that the Save the Children fundraiser will be at the Piranha Bar , Sparkes Marina, Hayling Island 7pm 'til midnight on Saturday 9th February. The tickets are priced at an affordable £20 each, this will include music by Blues Safari and a buffet with lobster etc, there will be a chance to dance as well. We will also be holding a top prize raffle and there is a short quiz game where the winner will receive a bottle of champagne/dinner for two. Why not come along and have a great night and in the process help raise funds for Save the Children! TICKETS ARE GOING FAST we only have 42 tickets remaining SO IF YOU WANT SOME PLEASE GET IN TOUCH! Contact Ray Acland on 07768796363 or Paul on 07796595432 for tickets, we can also arrange b&b for you if you would like to stay over after the event.

Anyone who would like some raffle tickets contact us on this email address, they are just £5 per book of 5 or £1 each. Please note that there is a change in flight carrier stated below. Thank you.

A reminder of the first prize - It's four nights in Hong Kong. You will fly club class on Cathy Pacific. you will then stay in 2 stylish five star hotels, the Hyatt Regency and the Grand Hyatt.

Re: Challenge 300

Post by Basil is a Gooner »

Good evening everyone.

In this weeks update you will read about how training on the recumbent is going, the weather conditions endured and updates on the fundraising event. You will learn about Paul's energy stuffs and his road safety as well as determination to raise the £50,000 needed to help Save the Children. We have a new sponsor who have sponsored evening meals, we welcomed that with open arms, leaving us with only a hotel and food in Haslemere to secure.

Training:

After a frustrating end of the week training las week, Paul set to getting the hours and miles in on the recumbent 'The Beautiful Beast', Sunday he was out in good if not cold conditions, taking on more hills and getting used to the 'lean over' steering of the recumbent, by Monday he had it mastered and has found confidence in both the steering and going down hill at speed. Paul has been racking up the miles as well as the first 2 days of the challenge will require determination and stamina to take on 73 miles for day one and day two, we believe he has both but will certainly be ready by April. Paul has already encountered his first road rager,on Wednesday a guy in his car lowered his window and shouted "get off the f.....g road, all because Paul was in a cycle lane and going slowly uphill on the recumbent which may have held the guy up for about 200 yds, never mind said Paul, he's the first one in around 3 or so thousand motorists to be impatient. Last week I mentioned that we would discuss Paul's energy stuffs which are sponsored by Hughes and Salvidge, the energy drinks, gels and bars are an important part of making sure Paul doesn't lose his stamina with so much hill work over so many hours per day and we are happy that Hughes and Salvidge have helped Paul with such an important part of the challenge. We have also to thank another company who has offered to give Paul extra energy drinks and bars etc as these will back up all of the above, and help last through to the end of the challenge. Road safety plays a very important part of Paul's training now as all his time is spent on the road. Thanks to Solent Cycles, Paul is lit up like a Christmas tree and if anyone doesn't see him coming or indeed in front of them then they need to go to an optician! Today Paul was out taking on the hills and even took on part of the 'BIG W' (we'll talk about the 'BIG W' another time), he was 4 hours on the road in temperatures between -1 and 1 centigrade when towards the end of the training session when Paul was 2/3rds of the way up the longest hill in his training regime (2 miles long) the heavens opened up and down came the sleet, within seconds Paul found himself pushing uphill against 1.5 inches of water going the other way and a sudden drop in temperature. Once at the top Paul had to descend a 1 mile hill with a gradient of 12%, now most people will think that going down hill is so much easier than going up, not true, especially in the wet! Paul is constantly braking with his hands to prevent the chair running away and being able to stop at short notice, so he has to put his hands, wrists and forearms as well as his shoulders under extreme pressure to keep the chair under full control. Now most of you know Paul likes to travel at speed but in the wet it's a different kettle of fish and having to brake for 1 mile downhill doesn't do the his hands, wrists, forearms and shoulders the world of good, he hates the wet but knows to take on the challenge that lies ahead he has to train in all conditions, after reaching the bottom of the hill there's a 1/2 mile climb, I don't need to tell you how determined you have to be to get to the top. Paul never returns from a training session complaining, he wants to raise the £50,000 for the children who deserve a chance! So that's this weeks training for you there's much more like this to come, lets hope the road ragers don't come out of the woodwork again, a lot of motorists have been great, hooting their horns and giving him the thumbs up, 2 people have said to him 'Respect' so that was good encouragement and just what he needs!

With the recumbent still out of action, Paul has been in the 'WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE' all week and will continue to be in it until the recumbent is repaired. Paul took on the 'BIG W' 4 times in the past 2 weeks. All the prizes for the Save the Children raffle that took place on December 10th have now been claimed. YOU CAN NOW DISPOSE OF YOUR TICKETS, THANK YOU FOR TAKING PART!

Training:

With Paul still taking on longer distances, the weather closed in and it has been a difficult week of training in the rain, wind and low temperatures, however, Paul took it in his stride as usual and got on with it. I inadvertently forgot to mention last week that Paul had take on the 'BIG W' twice and successfully completed it and not only did he do that but he went on to complete 2 of the longest hills in his training regime all in the wet, he did exactly the same this week but the weather on both of those days was really poor and we saw some real down pours on Wednesday which caused Paul to have to be extremely cautious on Hospital hill. I think the only weather that would stop Paul training is low visibility foggy conditions, mainly for safety reasons. Paul has certainly put in the miles this week and on Wednesday he received a new seat cushion which has made pushing the chair a lot easier because it has raised him some 2 inches in the seat and he can get a better purchase on the wheels. He has got some friction burns on the end of his fingers this week but that is because of the extra hard braking he had to do down Hospital hill on Wednesday, the gloves he wears are fantastic if he wasn't wearing them his hands would be in tatters, other than that things are going extremely well.

For those of you who are wondering what the 'BIG W' is, its a serious of 3 hills joined together by another road at the bottom which makes the shape of a 'w', each of the roads are approximately a 3rd of a mile long but when you combine the 3 together they are certainly not for the faint hearted to take on in a wheelchair. If we can find a map of them we'll add it to the next update after the New Year!

Welcome to the first update of 2013! It's been a busy Christmas and New Year's training week, since last writing Paul has been out battling the elements, especially Boxing day when it just poured and poured here in Portsmouth! We have another new sponsor, who have supplied extra warm clothing for Paul, we are grateful for this help.

Training:

Paul has taken on the 'BIG W' and two of the longest hills in one of his training routes, Boxing day saw him take these three challenges on and beat them even in the torrential down pour. Some of the local people have donated money for Save the Children but others appear to see Paul as target practice this time around, he was cut up on a roundabout and nearly hit by some impatient driver so he's lucky to be able to carry on. Coming down the mile long Hospital hill was really slow on boxing day because of the poor conditions, the gloves did their job to a point but the rain was so heavy Paul had to inch his way down the hill for a mile more for safety's sake than anything else. He arrived home as though he'd been for a swim in a dirty lake not a push around the roads of Portsmouth and the surrounding areas and with a smile on his face. Today (Thursday 3rd Jan) the freewheel bolt fractured again so it's back to the repairers on early Monday morning and training will take place in the afternoon, tomorrow Paul takes on his 30 miles session and will be doing it on four wheels not 3, this has problems in itself because if he hits a stone at speed with the front wheels it will throw him and the chair everywhere, however, Mike, one of the crew is coming all the way from Reigate area to accompany Paul for the 5 hours 30 minute session so Paul will have some kind of protection. Mike at Solent Cycles returns next week so we hope to have the recumbent back on the road again. There are only 2.5 months of training left so the countdown really has begun!

Good evening everyone.

Another week gone and a very hard weeks training as Paul moves up a level, no cars attempting to run him down this week though but some people think they know what is and isn't allowed on the the road and which side of the road. Please read the EVENTS section for up to date information on the Charity fundraiser! Please find attached a map of the 'BIG W'.

Training:

Paul combined the 'BIG W', Hospital hill and Suicide hill all in one training session on Saturday, on Sunday he took on a longer but more gruelling route which saw him take on Hospital hill again with the 'BIG W' and some of the steepest hills as well as distance with Monday being a shortened session but equally as tough as Saturday and Sunday. Not content with 3 extremely hard days he again went for the 'BIG W' followed by more distance work and Suicide hill, Paul repeated this routine through this week. Paul is working harder than any of his previous challenge preparations and is 100% more determined to succeed for this challenge.

For those of you who don't know what Suicide hill is then let me explain. When Paul was serving in the Royal Navy he did field gun, not the field gun you see today that is run along flat ground, the field gun where 18 men ran with a ton of steel gun and limber dismantled it and either passed it over walls or through them etc. Anyway the Portsmouth crew, who Paul ran for would train on Suicide hill for leg work, they would either carry a 40lb or 60lb sand bag on their shoulders and race each other up this hill, one of the steepest around Portsmouth. When they started to run up Suicide hill they would not be allowed to stop running, if they did they would have to go back down to the bottom and start again, even if they were just feet from the finish. The crew would say "It would be suicide to stop" hence the name suicide hill plus it is steep, I don't know how Paul manages to push himself up it, it's hard walking it!

Daily training routine: Up at 5:30, allows his body to loosen up in slow time, has breakfast and prepares his training gear, chair and energy drinks. He checks lights the night before but double checks them before going out, we strap up his hands and wrists to prevent strains and sprains, Paul then gets in to his training gear and is ready to go by 9 -10am after another once over of the chair, Freewheel and lights.

After a session it's out of the gear and in to the shower then it's lunch at around 2pm by this time Paul has consumed lots more liquid to prevent dehydration etc. A check over is necessary to find out if any parts of his hands need plasters the following day, we notice that this year there are more bisters than usual but he doesn't worry about them. The training session is usually over when everything is in the wash and Paul has eaten lunch, his diet is different to other times as we didn't secure a sponsor for his diet this time around so it's make do and see this time.

Firstly we apologise for the lateness of this update, unfortunately one of our good friends passed away over Christmas and we attended his funeral on Friday. Training has been dogged with problems but have not stopped Paul training and we have some very good news in the EVENTS SECTION, a sad story and concern about securing our hotel in Haslemere!

Training:

Despite the weather training has gone ahead as usual, Paul taking on the difficult hills and longer distances to ensure he remains on target for the 7th of April start date. We've had wind, rain, sleet and snow and equipment failures but none have prevented Paul training this past week. Training has been a little slower but the same routes have been conquered time after time and we are still on track. Paul turned to the gym today to ensure his strength hadn't diminished during road training and it was an opportunity to catch up with friends as well. Paul conquered suicide hill without having to zig zag his way up it so he was very pleased with that on Wednesday as it was only his 5th go on it! The 'BIG W' seems to be getting easier he says, just to make it clear the 'Big W' are 3 streets on a hillside along the Havant Road. He gets encouragement from all manner of people and really appreciates their kind support. Many thanks to Mike Paget of Solent Cycles who has kept Paul on the road, the recumbent is now fixed and Paul will be on it on Monday catching up on some valuable sessions.

URGENT Sponsor needed for item below:

We are increasingly concerned that we have not found enough sponsorship for our stay at the Georgian House Hotel in Haslemere, we have stopped there during the past 2 Challenges and it would be a pity to cancel this challenge because we can't get full sponsorship! If you or anyone else you know can help us please get in touch, all we are looking for is £250 which should secure the hotel? Thank you!

Story: Paul was watching a documentary called ' Britain's Hidden Hungry' it brought him to tears seeing children and their families literally starving and having to turn to food banks to eat. This shouldn't happen in this country, it's shameful and heartbreaking to see, so Paul has asked if we can come together and make food banks redundant in this country forever by supporting 'Challenge 300' and asking your friends to help by donating just £1 by text. Please text £1 donations by sending OVQV87 £1 TO 70070, it's anonymous and every £1 counts. Thank you!

Events: THE SAVE THE CHILDREN FUNDRAISING EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT! THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO ARE SUPPORTING US WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON THE NIGHT FOR SOME FUN AND FUNDRAISING!

We do however, have 5 extra tickets that we are advised can be sold so if you wish to support us please get in touch with Ray Acland on 07768796363.

We also have raffle tickets on sale for some really good prizes, prizes have a value of £20 or more. Tickets are £5 per strip, colours are Orange, White and Blue all drawn from their own buckets so its best to buy £15 worth which will help raise more funds for Save the Children UK and give you a better chance to win one or more of the great prizes on offer!

Good afternoon everyone.

Welcome to this weeks update, another week of equipment failure that required quick thinking, kind hearts come to our rescue for accommodation and a new record for 30 miles, plus another big prize for the fundraiser.

Training:

Yet again the weather hasn't prevented Paul from completing his training this week but an equipment failure on Monday required quick thinking to avoid injury. On Monday Paul was out on the recumbent covering the hills and miles and glad to be back using it again after repair by Solent Cycles. Paul was nearing home and had 4 hills to descend, it was when he was going down the first of these hills that he experienced brake failure, his quick thinking by pushing his leg off the foot rest and using his left foot as a brake avoided an accident as he was taking a sharp bend at the time. Undeterred Paul gingerly carried on and had to continue to use his foot as a brake down the next three hills in order to arrive home safely, after inspection of the brakes, Mike of Solent Cycles discovered a leak in both hydraulic cables and brakes so he has now changed the brakes and is awaiting delivery of the brake cables next week. We thank Mike for keeping us on the road and sponsoring Paul because without him the challenge would be over. The rest of the week has been covered by using the 'WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE' and the now repaired freewheel which has had the bolt replaced and torqued up to 180lbs, we won't count our chickens before they hatch but Paul is back on the road and enjoying every minute of it. He has been battling against wind, sleet, snow, ice and temperatures of minus 4 degrees and yesterday he broke his 30 mile record by completing it in 5 hours 2 minutes, not that he is out to break records but it does a lot for morale when you do something like that, today he took on the 'BIG W' and 20 miles which he doesn't do after a 30 mile session. Things a on the up again, lets hope they stay that way!

URGENT Sponsor NO longer required for item below:

We are so happy to announce that after our appeal last week we now have sponsors for our hotel in Haslemere on the 10th April, the sponsors that came to our rescue once again are Keith and Elaine Scrivens who are already supporting us with our evening meals during the week. We would like to thank you both so very, very much, your support is fantastic and like our other sponsors we couldn't do without you!

Donations: It is very rare for Paul to be down, his attitude is so positive he lifts so many people around him, however there is the odd occasion when things do get to him and this is one of them. As most of you are aware donations are down by a long way and Paul has thought of ideas which he had hoped might increase donations that will not have any or little effect on people's finances. One of his ideas was getting people to help by supporting 'Challenge 300' and asking friends to help by donating just £1 by text. Please text £1 donations by sending OVQV87 £1 TO 70070, it's anonymous and every £1 counts. Unfortunately because of his failure to persuade 50,000 people to donate just £1 each he feels that this makes him a failure and although he will finish the challenge, I say that what he is taking on makes him something very special.

Events: We have been generously donated a fantastic prize by Brittany Ferries, a ferry crossing to France for a car plus 2 people.

We have raffle tickets on sale for some really good prizes, prizes have a value of £20 or more. Tickets are £5 per strip, colours are Orange, White and Blue all drawn from their own buckets so its best to buy £15 worth which will help raise more funds for Save the Children UK and give you a better chance to win one or more of the great prizes on offer!

Sad News: We'd like to take this opportunity to spare a thought for two people who we knew and who passed away this month, Frank Goatcher and Dave, both will be missed and thought of as time goes by. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends.

Please don't forget that you can read more information on Challenge 300 by visiting our facebook and twitter pages below. Thank you for your kind support, see you next week!

Welcome to the first update of February, sorry for the delay but it's been a very busy week this week and we're playing catch up. High winds, cross winds and rain didn't stop play, raffle prizes are coming in and we're looking forward to the fundraising event on Saturday 9th Feb....Just a week away, please read the events section for details on the night!

If anyone would like some posters to put up around your area or in your office please get in touch and we'll either send them out to you or drop them in. We note that we have a record number of sponsors this time, it's very humbling to have so much support. Thank you.

Training:

No news on the recumbent, we are awaiting parts then it's back on the road again for the rest of training and the challenge!

Sunday saw Paul take on the 'BIG W', Hospital hill and Suicide hill in one big session, followed by Monday's session which was long and hard against high winds and rain but as usual what may stop some of us venturing out doesn't stop Paul. On Tuesday it was more of the same kind of weather as Monday but without the rain, the wind was very strong and as you can imagine it was very, very strong on the top of Portsdown hill, Paul said that he has never had to push himself down hill before and never been blown sideways before either. Shame we don't have pictures to show you but Peter is busy elsewhere and we can't make a last minute call to him as it wouldn't be fair. On Friday Paul completed his 30 miles training without an outrider because, unfortunately Gary's mother became unwell on Thursday evening and he had to cancel his trip out with Paul. The rain came down in the morning on Friday and the wind got up when Paul set off on his session, there was a mix-up with meeting him at the bottom of Farlington Avenue which delayed Paul by up to 20 minutes. However, undeterred Paul set out to recover the time lost and did so in style, he completed this weeks session in exactly the same time as he did last week 5 hours 2 minutes 7 seconds so he had to be working really hard to do that. Despite being under the weather with a sore throat he battled on and now appears to over come it, I'd have preferred he stayed at home and rested but not Paul, lets blow it away is his attitude and he's done just that! This week saw another driver pull over and hand him £5 towards the total and although we are a long way off to raising that £50,000, it's things like this that helps lift his spirits, thank you to that stranger whoever you are. Temperatures are set to drop in the coming week so it should be interesting to say the least.

Donations: Please text £1 donations by sending OVQV87 £1 TO 70070, it's anonymous and every £1 counts.

Events: As you are aware it's the fundraising function on Saturday 9th February, those of you who have purchased tickets and made this a sell out event, thank you. Can we ask you to arrive between 6:45pm and 7pm please as we want to get things underway at 7pm and there's lots to do and enjoy throughout the evening. Raffle tkts will go on sale at 9:15pm so have your money ready and there's a few games to get you in the mood and prizes to be won!
