My memory is that some gooners pretended they were Palace and were then escorted out of the North Bank. But the group grew all the time with other gooners (me included) joining in, many even wearing red & white scarves. Chanting "Palace, Palace" the group, by now several hundred strong group were led along the bottom of the west stand and into the clock end to join the rest of the Palace fans. The police, unlike just about everyone in the ground at that time, didn't have a clue what was going on.....
OK! Yes, think my memory must have been drug induced..... !
spot on MK. However, we also did it against the mancs in about '80 or '81. Cockney Reds used to make a show in the NB every year then get escorted up the CE. So we made out we were CR. The shout went up and some of the NB came over to have a pop. the look on some faces when they realsied who we really were. Some were so excited they almost gave the game away. Off we marched along the west stand with the mancs giving us a huge reception not knowing the truth. We got right in the middle of 'em and as the teams came out a shout of 'Arsenal' and then straight into them.
got escorted back down the NB and after the game chased them all the way back to holloway road. I got turned over by plod and missed my appearance at Highbury magistrates due to teh fact the wankers had burst my appendix and I was in hospital for FOUR weeks.
Got a case dismissed when it finally came around.

not so. villa had the whole CE and we had some fun with them on Benwell Road before the game then on up into Drayton Park.charliegeorgewhocanhitem wrote:Unless my memory fails me or I've got it mixed up, I'm sure that same trick also worked at home to Villa on the day they won the league at Highbury in 81. Obviously the old bill took quite a while to get clued up on that one
We went in west stand paddock and got as close to the Ce as possible. Pele came onto the pitch before the game so we ran on. Three times we invaded the pitch before the game and each time some made it into the CE.
terry Neill had been in the sun before the game saying he wanted a party atmosphere. At the end of the game Arsenal ran on from three sides. villa didn't want to play to begin with but slowly they came on the pitch.
Plod moved us into lower east seats where we spent time chucking a few at each other.
Villa had an estimated 15,000 there that day and we didn't let them enjoy it for one minutes. Especially at H&I station

I remember all the fun on the pitch after, as you say, we were on there well before them and they'd just won the league. Our half of the pitch was pretty full up with us before they even started to get on.I was on the nb and thought I had some memory of ours coming through singing "Villa" and then getting taken along the West Stand terrace towards them but as it was nearly 30 years ago things do get a bit mixed up and fade into one From the bits I do remember, it was a very eventful day tho
Thanks Reg, for backing me up on the tricks to get into the clock end....although no surprise that I was part of the mob who went in against Palace but sadly absent against Man U !
Palace also provided me with my first experience of being in someone else's end. I guess it would also have been early 80's. I remember the adrenalin when the Arsenal shout went up and the "surprise" when I realised I was on the edge of the group.... "Come on then, come on...."! There were enough in there that we comfortably stayed until the end. Think we might even have won!
Villa in 1981 was a scream. Think they came here thinking it would be a day of celebration but it turned into a war. Funniest memory as you say was at the end of the match when they tentatively invaded the pitch. Think they got to about the edge of the six yard box before they realised that we were already on the edge of their box.....must have 20,000 plus gooners on the pitch that day!

Do you also remember "we beat spurs with 6 reserves and alan (Sunderland, I think) scored again..."?
My "debut" at WHL was a 2-2 draw around 76. Think we'd been 2-0 up.

Blimey, this brings back some memories - i remember the Pele / Villa game very well, in those days the programme was sponsored by Atari, which was all the rage.
I spent the eighties as part of the topside - I remember singing 'rip roar is a wanker' or 'rip roar is a gooner' depending on how the game was going, and the really fit dark haired girl in the tea bar at the top of the steps.
I also remember a big firm of black lads who stood on the lower east terrace of the north bank - it was the first time I saw weed smoked at game - they were very handy, I remember them running a scum firm out on to the pitch one boxing day - I think they were just known as the 'grove' lads ?
In later years I can remember clockenders trying to climb the fences to get at the scousers, then hundreds of us chasing them down highbury hill to their coaches, where I just missed a brick to the head.
Some of the same lads I used to see at Brentford too a lot. In fact I was talking to one outside the Gunners in May 1998 when i realized standing behind him were the page three girls Jo Guest and Kathy Lloyd - JG was looking well fit in some Arsenal top, but Kathy had always been my second favourite page 3 girl after Linda Lusardi and I was gobsmacked LOL
happy daze

Only the once and memory says it was on the paper train from Liverpool Street to Harlow in the early hours of one Sunday morning. Can't recall which match we were returning from.....
