RIP John Motson
Used to come out with some hilarious commentaries, but he also had some pearlers. Liam Brady vs the Spuds back in the day springs to mind. RIP and thanks Motty.

Re: RIP John Motson
Yes, like most of us I grew up with him doing the commentary of numerous, numerous games... John Motson the man in the Sheepskin Coat!
His ability to remember the tiniest details and facts about games from 40 odd years ago was amazing, his knowledge of Football undeniable.
One of the Old Skool presenters and Commentators who only ever did Good for the Game.
RIP John.

John Motson, Barry Davies and Brian Moore - the big 3 really back in the day.
the current lot are very poor in comparison (and thats before you consider the whiny women commentators)

Absolute gentleman. Had the pleasure of meeting him once at Cheltenham in March 98. Had a great chat about the Arsenal title push and he tipped me up an 8/1 winner. Cheers John. RIP.

Another part of my youth gone
I actually always preferred Barry Davies as a commentator but Motty was good as well.
Dickie Davis a few days ago and now Motty, not many left from the 70's now, they are all dead......or in prison!!

Am I the only one that didn’t like his commentary ?
He would often say “ and I have to say “………
Then laugh at his own comment.
Anyhoo, sorry he has passed
I’m turning into a grump old man

Re: RIP John Motson
No, you're not. I was the same. Sort of thought he was a bit of a pompous old know-it-all who lived off his reputation from the 70s. Always went on about Manure and the bindipeprs and made snide comments about us whenever he could. I never subscribed the whole cult of Motson thing when there were many better commentators. Doesn't mean I'm glad he's dead but he was a poor version of Barry Davies and Brian Moore.Stuart L (2) wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 5:05 pmAm I the only one that didn’t like his commentary ?

I preferred Brian Moore myself, but liked Motty alot too. I hate modern commentators though.
SlySports sicken me when they roll out Martin Tyler's screech of "Arguerooooo" like its an iconic commentary moment. It's not. It's just a noise ffs.

Another person gone from our growing up days!
Although wasn't his biggest fan, especially his second guessing at important momentsand useless information, you can't deny his impact on football fans when was less money driven and sensationalist!
This is probably his finest hour from the Euro 84 Final... The hiss from the comms, the horns in the background and an epic game
RIP Motty

Barry Davies was my favourite but Mitty was a true legend as well along with Bruan Moore, the Brady goal sticks out for me. RIP

RIP Motty, always liked his commentary, heard his interview on desert Island discs last night, seemed a real gentleman and such a great voice.
