Invasive knee surgery is never good (I’ve had three on the same knee before I was 25, it’s shit). I just hope that access to the best specialists means that he won’t suffer recurring problems with the knee, following the injury AND the surgery.

Let’s hope that he doesn’t turn into another injury prone full-back, from now on.

Is that you Abu Diaby???

Sorry mate couldn't resist.....so you used to play then? At what level?

May as well have been.

My first knee injury was in school, when I was 16. I was a goalkeeper. I had just started my trails with the Arsenal schoolboys; nothing official per se, but I had to head to Barnet after school every Wednesday, and play in an Arsenal kit - after school trials essentially. Either way, first day back at school after Christmas, I tore my meniscus to bits playing footie in PE. Going down for a simple save. Ya know that feeling when you have that urge to click your knee? It felt like, that but it didn’t go, and it got more painful as the seconds went on, and my knee swelled up double the normal size.

I remember the day well, as after I got back from A&E I watched us we beat Liverpool at Anfield, in the league cup, 6-3. Baptista scored a hatrick.

I had to have surgery, I was unable to walk unaided for about 8 weeks. Lost my place at the Arsenal trials. Lost my place in the school team. About six weeks after I got to play again, I tear it again. Second surgery a few months later (NHS waiting times weren’t AS BAD then). Okay for a year after, start getting in my local team and doing alright, and then it tears again. My surgeon told me that if I keep playing then I’m basically looking at a prosthetic knee. So, yeah. I’m nearly 32 and I can’t run without pain anymore.

Oh, my word. That's a terrible run of injuries in such a short space of time and at an age when all you want to do is be fit to play your favourite sports every week. I'm sorry to hear that you've been through all that. Just out of interest, were there any names we'd know at those Arsenal sessions?

I genuinely feel you mate, I didn't mean to pry or make light of what was obviously Life Changing for you.

I did / had something happen along injury lines - I was at National Level Schoolboy Gymnastics 15yrs old - I was Very Good, I'd won 4 Competitions on the trot: Floor, Pummel-Horse, Trampoline and Rings... Then had a bad fall clearing the High Horse, I was suppose to do a Double Somersault & Ball out with a Half-twist, but missed the Crash Mats - displaced 5th & 6th Lumbar vertebrae - 2 years later I was done & dusted - I still have to have McTimoney Chiropractic treatment every 2 months or so..when the Vertebrae go out. Iused to Love Gymnastics; especially the Floor Diswciplpine routines. C'est La Vie eh. :?

I bet there are quite a few on here who had the trajectory of their lives Changed / Ruined by Injury.

Ah, it’s alright. I was more annoyed that I couldn’t have those muddy Saturday kickabouts with my mates.

No one that we’d know, but we had some really good coaches. Sadly, I missed out on a trip to train, and have a kick about, at Colney by three weeks. :banghead:

Blimey, I’m sorry to hear that mate. That must have been agony too, :| does the physio help? I’m supposed to have it on my knee (to keep the arthritis at bay, as during the winter months I’m hobbling around looking Quasimodo shat himself) but whenever I’ve gone it’s never seemed worthwhile.

You’re right though, it just takes one slight moment/mistiming and it can literally change everything. Life, ehy! Thank Christ for alcohol.

Good coaches, you say? Round about 2007ish. Bloody hell, if only they'd been in charge of the first team. :D

It's not physio mate, physio tends to be more for the Musculature and Tendons & Sinews (Which is what your injury/damage sounds like)... It's called McTimoney Chiropractic - They put bones back in alignment though there's more to it than that - Chiropractors are good by the McTimoney tradition/ version is (for me) far more affective.

Aaaah!Yes the Ole Quasi-shat-his-cacks gait... Knew it well (and being in a wheel chair for a time) but can walk okay now - Unless I have had Alcohol!

Knees, ankles, ribs, wrist, nose, elbow, collar bone, eye socket, jaw, teeth, concussions, cheek bone, metatarsal, ligaments, tendons, stitches.... had em all broken, torn or strained, in a glorious 40 year career at the low levels of the amateur Dublin leagues.... and a few of those injuries were from the regular fights you get at that level....

When I get up in the morning and I'm walking down the stairs my knees and ankles sound like shotguns going off ffs.

But I loved every minute of those 40 years playing. 8)
