As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Stays till the End wrote:maybe we can have another post with the most suggested songs and go with the one what wins the poll is gooner.ed is quite happy to that for us, As I'm going out in a minute otherwise I would do it
I am snowed under at the moment, but want to do this properly. firstly, there are two pieces of music under discussion here. liverpool do not walk out to YNWA, it is played as they line up in the tunnel. then when they come out there is either another piece of music of nothing. can't remember. it's like when everton walk out, they get the theme from Z-Cars. kasabian are (i think, am never in early enough) played as the teams walk out. this was voted for by the fans although the details of how, i can't be sure.
so 'jump' by the house of pain is a grand idea for the walk out. but that music is for another thread - call it 'walk out music' and take the premise that you are unhappy with the current kasabian music (klub foot?).
keith edelman says he wants an anthem and that is the focus of this thread. we are talking a YNWA equivalent. we were discussing it here before he said that, so let's take the opportunity. i will (try my best to) spend an hour i haven't got at some point later today and just get a list of likely candidates and explain why some don't fit the criteria. then we can discuss the final list. i will probably start a new thread for that.
but the vote will be on the referendum part of the main website so that a lot of arsenal fans and not just forum members here can vote on it. i will contact the other arsenal websites to ask them to link to the vote. the more arsenal fans vote, the more authorative the suggestion when put to the club. redaction have agreed to get involved come the time in terms of liasing with the club.
What about some new words to the Freddie song? The slow build up whilst the boys (or girls now?) are in the tunnel "You're just too good to be fourth" exploding into "We love you, Arsenal...". We all know most of the words already, it's adaptable to any player and it's singable. In any event, Ed needs to produce his short list otherwise we'll all still be making suggestions at the end of next season...now what was that song again that won Eurovision?
forum regulars - i have been defeated by comittments and lack of time this weekend. my apologies. away now until friday pm with no access to internet (someone will post the exclusive 'further discussion' thread starters in my name as a favour to keep things ticking over in my absence). i will do the anthem shortlist for next weekend. time has just beaten me and getting online for more than 5 minutes has been impossible. if you want to keep this thread alive until my return, by all means do. but there is enough here for me to take the next step, so let it slide down the subject list if you've had enough of this stage of the debate now...
your just to good to be fourth

Bejesus, said Paddy
I sang it so well
I think I'll get up and I'll sing it again
So Paddy got up and he sang it again
Over and over and over again
There is a team called the Arsenal
The greatest of them all
And we will always support you
Whether you rise or fall, or fall
And we'll drink, drink together
In praise of the AFC
And we’ll drink, drink, drink together
In praise of the AFC.
Fulham can stay at the Cottage
Southampton have gone from the dell
And as for tottenham hotspur
They can go to hell, to hell
And we'll drink, drink together, In praise of the AFC!
And we’ll drink, drink, drink together, In praise of the AFC
There have been some good suggestions for the players to run out to....but they're not Anthems! There are also some great old Arsenal songs.....but they're not Anthems!
MKGould, you got me thinking with Danny Boy. I don't know why I didn't think of it before. It's a very powerful anthemic ballad and very very easy to sing. But let's ignore the Peter Kaye version!!
So I spent the afternoon in work rewriting the lyrics to suit. I've sung it to the tune and it sounds pretty tight. Try it out folks and let me know what you think.
To the tune of Danny Boy.
Oh Gooner boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From High-bury, and down through Islington
The season's gone, but Gooners are still singing
'Tis you, 'tis you must sing and we will win.
But come ye back with Arsenal in your hearts
When summer's over and season starts
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Gooner boy, oh Gooner boy, The Arsenal.
And if you come, when all the flags are flying
And I am red, and white as I can be
You'll come and find the place where I am singing
And chant and sing Arsenal for me.
And I shall cheer, with Arsenal all around me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
And we'll all sing to tell you that we love you
Oh Arsen-al, a Gooner I’ll always be.
Oh Arsen-al, a Gooner I’ll always be.
The Original Danny Boy lyrics are; Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.
And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.
And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.
I posted another reply after the Danny Boy suggestion but it seems to have got lost in the mix. Basically it said that I had given the proposed Gooner Boy lyrics a go with a few of me mates round my gaff and it was pretty tight. Hair up on back of neck tight.
Imagine 60000 Gooners singing it...
Danny Boy really is a great piece of music; I'd forgotten how great til we sang it.
Further discussion with the lads led us to the thought of it maybe being perceived as too "Oirish" a song. But I think it's so well known that it is considered fairly universal and is sung outside of the Emerald Isle more than inside.
From Michael Robinson's web page;
To begin with, Danny Boy is one of over 100 songs composed to the same tune. The author was an English lawyer, Frederic Edward Weatherly (1848-1929), who was also a songwriter and radio entertainer. In 1910 he wrote the words and music for an unsuccessful song he called Danny Boy. In 1912 his sister-in-law in America sent him a tune called the "Londonderry Air" which he had never heard before. He immediately noticed that the melody was perfectly fitted to his Danny Boy lyrics, and published a revised version of the song in 1913.
So, contrary to popular belief, the words are by an Englishman.
And, if you think about it, every time we sing "...and it's Arsenal, Arsenal eff cee, by far..." etc we are actually singing the Irish Rover which doesn't seem to put too many people off...
Good to see that you're keeping yourself busy in work DB10GOONER!
Peter Kaye's may not be the best version, artisticly speaking, but it does show what a powerful anthem it is. Unfortunately YouTube doesn't show it in its best light. You need the DVD for that.
I agree with you that its more universal than Oirish. Its hardly a rebel song!
I get no kick from champagne.
Mere alcohol doesn't thrill me at all,
So tell me why should it be true
That I get a kick out of you?
Some get a kick from cocaine.
I'm sure that if I took even one sniff
That would bore me terrific'ly too
Yet I get a kick out of you.
I get a kick ev'rytime I see
You standing there before me.
I get a kick though it's clear to me
You obviously don't adore me.
I get no kick in a plane,
Flying too high with some guy in the sky
Is my idea of nothing to do,
Yet I get a kick out of you.
You Really Got Me (by The Kinks) - requires minor tinkering.
Girl, you really got me goin'
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin'
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin', now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
See, don't ever set me free
I always wanna be by your side
Girl, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin', now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
Oh no...
(solo)
See, don't ever set me free
I always wanna be by your side
Girl, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin', now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
We are going round in circles guys. Gooner ed just close the thread and get a shortlist of the good songs mentioned i.e. Impossible dream, wonderwall etc and put them forward.
Everyone has different views and this thread can go on forever. I don't care what song it is, all I want is a fecking song to stand up to and belch out with tears dropping down my eyes when we lift the champions league.
ok - i hear you. i am back and will sort this out thursday evening to post on the main part of the site on friday. there will be a list of the contenders and reasons given why some simply don't cut the mustard. i'll then have a few days where people can voice their discontent (call it the right of appeal) and then we'll launch a referendum on this, inviting other websites to encourage their own regulars to visit us to vote. and after that... a democratically elected anthem! then just a matter of consultations with the club - through redaction in all probability.
