Olivia Smith has become the first one million pound female footballer after joining Arsenal Women from Liverpool on a long-term contract.

Canada international Smith has signed for a fee of £1 million, eclipsing the £900,000 Chelsea paid for Naomi Girma in January.

The 20-year-old scored nine goals in 25 games for Liverpool last season, and was voted the Merseyside club’s Player of the Season. Smith was also nominated for the Women’s Super League Rising Star award.

Smith spent time in the US college system before scoring 16 goals for Sporting Lisbon in 2023/24, earning her the move to the WSL.

The pacy winger became Canada’s youngest ever player in 2019, making her debut at the age of 15 and making 18 appearances to date.

Smith becomes Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer, and told the club's website: “It’s a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal.” 

“It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I’m excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal. The atmosphere the supporters create at Emirates Stadium is incredible and I can’t wait to have that behind me now.”
