Arsene Wenger: Abou Diaby can be a "major asset"

By Paul Gorst, Reporter

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that Abou Diaby can be a "major asset" for his team - if the midfielder can maintain his fitness.

The energetic Diaby has been plagued with a series of injuries throughout his Gunners career, but the 28-year-old played 45 minutes against Boreham Wood in last weekend's pre-season friendly.

Wenger told the club's official website: "If you get a fit Diaby back, it will be a major asset for our team. At the moment we go step-by-step and he came through this game so that's very good news for us.

"You wish that he just gets through the game, which happened here - I'm very pleased with that."

Diaby lasted just 16 minutes on his one and only Premier League appearance last season

He did have one great game at Anfield. Putting him on a par with Jeremie Aliadiere. Come to think of it didn't we almost manage to sign that fucker again? :rubchin:

The Great Man is returning to full fitness - "major asset" will be the understatement of the year if Abou stays fit this year. Playing for a new contract next Summer too, so wish him all the best everyone

surely he must be due a testimonial soon, surely ?

according to analysis of the club accounts, Wenger has spent 143million on fees, wages and bonuses for Djourou, bentdner, denilson, santos, eboue, dench, aliadere, jeffers, gervinho, squillacci, chamakh, song and diaby.

so if ever an AKB says "it was the stadium".......remind them that we paid Djourou nearly 18million during his 9 1/2 year stay...

Jan 2016 the testimonial is due, and I hope the Gooner faithful turn out en masse to pay tribute to one of our most loyal servants of the modern era

What do you base that on? They didn't put a gun to Arsene's to get the contracts they were on. It's just a list of players who weren't good enough for us, every football fan in the country could reel off an equivalent list for their club. You may have a point about Bendtner in the sense that he lacks basic professionalism but just being paid a lot of money is no guarantee that you can perform to such a high standard. Blame the people who hand out the contracts, not the players themselves.

Its madness putting The King of Denmark and Red Member's "excellent CB" in the same category and you know it. The first two are a pair of Joe Average wasters......Abou is infinitely more talented and suffers from that major crime of suffering terrible injuries

Don't want to push you over the edge or anything here, mate  - but the figure I've seen most associated with Diaby is £27million in those 9 years... :| Now, I'm not sure if that's what we paid him in wages or his total earnings but it's still shocking considering he has played 3 times in that 9 years. More or less.

But this has been my point with the AKB's for years now. The "financial restraints because of the stadium build" excuse is absolute bullshit. Absolute fucking bullshit. I'm not saying we had the money to piss away on vanity signings like the chav or building two squads like Citeh, but we certainly had the money to buy and retain better players than we did. The money was there, the problem is Wenger mis-spent it on extending and improving the contracts of players that should have been released years before they were.

Look at that list above. Most of those players had proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were not good enough within a year to 2 years. And yet Wenger extended nearly all of their contracts and in most cases gave them pay rises to boot! :x Fucking madness.
