Lee Carsley's England U21s moved to the quarter-finals of the European Under-21 Championship despite being beaten 2-0 by Germany U21 in their final group-stage match.

Eintract Frankfurt's Ansgar Knauff showed excellent techinque before firing past Brighton's James Beadle after only 180 seconds to make it 1-0.

Worse was to come for England when Mainz attacker Nelson Weiper got between Jack Hinshelwood and Charlie Cresswell to make it 2-0.

England pulled a goal back to amke it 2-1 after the interval through Alex Scott, with Omari Hutchinson assisting, but Carsley's side couldn't reach parity.

The result saw England finish second in the group and now face a quarter-final clash against group A winners Spain on Saturday.

Find out who impressed including Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri with View From The Armchair's Player Ratings

James Beadle (Brighton and Hove Albion) 6/10 - Had to pick out the ball from the net in under three minutes but couldn’t be blamed for either goal

Sam Iling Jnr (Aston Villa) 6/10 - busy on the left, I thought the Islington-born defender did ok, pulled off at half time due to a reshuffle

Charlie Cresswell (FC Toulouse) 6/10 - comfortable on the ball, looks like a good prospect to me but should have done better for Germany’s second.

Jarell Quansah (Liverpool) 7/10 - commanding presence, and a shining light at the back in this under 21 team

Jack Hinshelwood (Brighton and Hove Albion 6/10 - industrious throughout, but should have done better for Nelson Weiper's goal

Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest) 6/10 - plenty of possession, subbed on 63 mins.

Alex Scott (AFC Bournemouth) 6/10 - robust jaw protector a talking point, yellow card 65 mins, scored on 75 mins to make it 2-1.

Omari Hutchinson (Ipswich) 6/10 - crafty footwork from the former Arsenal academy attaker led to an assist on 75 minutes

Harvey Elliot (Liverpool) 5/10 - wasteful with his passing, blazed high and wide on 40 mins, rightly pulled off at half time

Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal) 7/10 - plenty of early threat from the Young Gun who is still only 18, enjoyed threading passes behind the lines, subbed on 63 minutes a victim of German efficiency after being mostly double marked throughout

Jonathan Rowe (Marseille) 6/10 - nuisance up front, without showing any threat against goal

Substitutes

James McAtee (Manchester City) 6.5/10 - did better than Elliot when introduced.

Brooke Norton Cuffy (Genoa) 7/10 - the former Arsenal academy defender did well when introduced.

Jay Stansfield (Birmingham City) 6/10 - despite coming off the back off a stellar season for the Blues on the back of a multi-million transfer the striker was largely anonymous.

Tom Fellows (West Brom) 6/10 - failed to make an impact

Tyler Morton (Liverpool) 6/10 - England debut on 63 minutes.
