Online Editorial: Nine year Monkey off Arsenal’s back

At Last!

Trophies. How they are won is ultimately not the thing. The main thing is that they are won. Arsenal have a tendency to put their supporters through torture to do it, and such was the case yesterday at Wembley.

The start was nothing short of a fiasco. The Arsenal players, for all the talk of not going into the game with any sense of complacency, were simply not at the races from the off. Hull were winning challenges, showing the greater desire and commitment. Wenger’s team have often been slow starters in matches, but on this occasion Hull took the initiative that the Gunners seemed to have no interest in seizing. Two early set piece goals were followed by a Kieran Gibbs header off the line. Arsenal were reeling. Only one team looked frozen by the occasion, overcome with nerves. The passing was awry, and with their noses well and truly in front, Hull had the option to retreat into their shell and focus on keeping a clean sheet rather than exploiting Arsenal’s poor beginning any further.

The selection of Fabianski over Szczesny was the big talking point of the game. The rest of the team, given the injury to Oxlade-Chamberlain, was fairly predictable. The keeper should arguably have done more to command his area, especially for the free kick that led to the second goal. It crossed my mind that the defence have more faith in Szczesny and that really, sentiment should play no part in team selection. For a final you pick the strongest team.

I also pondered why the team should be psychologically shot, as they appeared to be in the early stages. The one thing they have done this season is see off lesser teams. This was not Liverpool or Chelsea. Thoughts went back to the League Cup Final defeat against Birmingham three seasons ago, but only two of the players that started yesterday played any part in that game (Sagna and Koscielny).

Still, Arsenal sorted their act out and Cazorla scored a delightful free kick to give the fans something to cheer about, and early enough for nerves to be settled. What followed was Arsenal trying to break Steve Bruce’s team down and not making a particularly convincing job of it as so few genuine chances were fashioned. Passes were misplaced and when balls were played long to Olivier Giroud, he seemed to have little joy in winning his battles.

Hull, unsurprisingly, used up clock eating antics that provide an argument for football matches to revert to 60 minute basketball timing affairs. It was tedious, frustrating but also effective in disrupting any sense of rhythm Arsenal might have tried to develop.

The second half was a matter of hoping and waiting for the moment of breakthrough. With so much dominance, it had to come. The course of the game saw three cast iron Gunners penalties denied, I was informed via text message, although from my pew, the only one I felt certain of was one on Cazorla in the second half when he had his legs taken from him. As in the semi-final, Podolski was withdrawn so that the formation could revert to 4-4-2, although this time, it was Sanogo entering the fray to join Giroud rather than the other way round. It did strike me how little Arsene Wenger left the bench to issue instructions during the final. Perhaps he felt there was nothing he could add to proceedings for the most part. It was very strange.

Sanogo made life difficult for Hull’s defenders through his sheer physicality and pace if not his technique. He is a battering ram and looks highly unlikely to develop into another Anelka for the plain reason he can’t sort out his feet. The corner he won that led to the equalizer did not look like it should have been awarded, even in the stadium, but the Gunners were glad of the break, and Koscielny popped up with a key goal as he tends to from time to time. Hull can complain about the award of the corner, but that needs to be balanced against the three penalties Lee Probert refused to give. He was a referee afraid of giving the big decisions, and was too reluctant to issue cards in the earlier part of the game through fear of having to send someone off further down the line. All four goals in the final up to this point had been scored from set pieces. The Arsenal players gestured to the crowd to get behind the team more, although sometimes the supporters need something to feed off, and for long periods, there was precious little coming from events on the pitch.

It should have been wrapped up without the need for extra time, as Kieran Gibbs had an excellent chance to settle matters, but blasted the ball over the bar. The subs warmed up, and one wondered why fresh legs were not bought on after 75 minutes. When the changes did eventually come, they were the expected ones, with Wilshere and Rosicky replacing Cazorla and Ozil. The latter had a fairly anonymous game, symbolizing the difficulty his team had stringing a sequence of passes together once they got into the opposition half. It was a final of drama, but in fairness, neither team performed that well.

Extra time favoured the Gunners if only because they were territorially more likely to create something and Hull were reliant on their reserves of energy to prevent Arsenal’s approach being effective. Giroud was unlucky to hit the crossbar in the first period, but the introduction of fresh legs gave the team the extra energy and critically pace in their build up play to settle matters. Rosicky should have replaced Ozil far earlier. The winner was a classic Arsenal goal with the one touch play coming off and Aaron Ramsey hitting a sweet finish into the bottom corner of the net to send the Arsenal fans into delirium. It was fitting that the Welshman, the outstanding player of the season, should crown it by netting the winner.

Of course, Arsenal being Arsenal there was still had time to invoke heart attacks with Mertesacker’s slip, Fabianski’s failed attempt to beat the Hull’s Aluko to the ball and Kieran Gibbs coming perilously close to touching the shot across the goalmouth to score an OG. Given the number of attempts the Gunners had seen sail over the bar in the two hours, I really did not fancy the prospect of a penalty shoot-out. Fortunately, the whistle went soon after and the celebrations could begin in earnest.

The players showed how much winning something meant displaying as much ecstasy and indeed relief as the supporters. Stan Kroenke seemed to thouroughly enjoy sitting next to Prince William, which will hopefully give him the taste of how sweet silverware can be, as opposed to bank statements with large balances. I wonder if he will be on top of the team bus for the parade today? Directors sometimes are. The guy is around for the duration and if he can see what an impact winning trophies has, perhaps he will push the manager harder to use all available resources to increase the chances of more.

As for Arsene Wenger himself, what mattered is that his team were not once again the bridesmaids. There have been three losing finals since the last trophy and there was a feeling that a habit was developing. Would he have gone if Arsenal had lost? Who knows? However, he is staying for at least another two seasons so what matters is that past mistakes are not repeated. Whatever the differences between Arsenal supporters in their views, one thing we should all agree on is how good it feels to win trophies, because they are what shapes the club’s history. Another year will be added to the many celebrated on the ring around the stadium at Ashburton Grove. On that note, it was good to hear reports of a celebratory pitch invasion at the screening after the cup had been won. The fans were told to clear the pitch or the screen would be turned off, but the match was over and they were in party mood, so they stayed put and the club duly turned off the screen. You just have to hand it to stadium management for sensing the mood of the moment and doing their best to poop the party. Get a life. The season’s over and the pitch has almost three months to recover.

A word on Wembley. Real problems at Turnstile P. Some of the entrances worked fine. Some didn’t. So some queues moved quickly enough, but certainly on the two at the far right, there were problems with the electronic readers. I saw friends join a neighbouring queue after I had been in mine about five minutes and they entered about ten minutes before I did. Because I started queuing at 4.20, I did get to my seat by 4.50, but I am aware that many behind me did not get in until after the game started and a number were still taking their seats after five minutes had been played. A steward blamed the ticket printing, but identical tickets had no problems in other turnstiles. For a showpiece stadium only completed less than ten years ago, it was a complete shambles.

Still, at least everyone was in to see Arsenal’s goals and enjoy the outcome of a memorable day. Cup finals are special days when you end them victorious (and of course killers when you don’t), and fans celebrated long into the evening back in Islington on a gorgeous balmy early summer night. There will be a few hangovers this morning, and let’s hope there are cause for a few more before another nine years elapse.

Finally, a quick word on this season’s Gooner Survey. Normally, we get it online after the final game of the season has been played, but this year, it will be delayed by a few days. It should be online by Bank Holiday Monday in eight days’ time.

The current issue of The Gooner can be bought online here. It’s a 64 page special priced at £3 and includes an interview with Sol Campbell and special sections on the 10th anniversary of the Invincibles and Arsenal in the Cup Final.

@MG: If the absolute truth be known I'm not expecting him to change at all. But I've got to believe he will until it looks like he hasn't because its the only way I'll get any enjoyment out of following the Club. As I said the other day I totally stand by every negative comment and thought I've mnade about him but I cant spend the whole summer being negative when we've just won a cup competition which is really what its all about. Cant also deny that going to the parade with my daugther and seeing so many happy people made me think I've got to at least try and get behind him again. Of course I know full well it won't take much for me to become all negative again but for now I'm enjoying having some happy thoughts about the Club for a change!!!!...

Tony Evans, me too he was the last thing on my mind, it was about the team the club and the fans and thankfully all were rewarded. I guess we'll never know for sure but i'm convinced he'd have walked, i wouldn't have been as convinced weeks ago with the talk of a two year deal and that it had been signed but with the match now been played and going two down like that and if we'd have went on to lose there would have been no way back for him and i guess that's why the announcement was held back until after the final. But his trump card came up trumps yet again as did his last throw of the dice (they always do)and as you say we have him for three more years and the three year deal was slipped nicely in under the radar, and yourself and allybear are right some fans have longer memories than others and don't forgive or forget quite as easily. Will he change from the last nine years now we've won something? One things for sure everybody is going to be expecting more days like Saturday and Sunday both Arsenal fans and Arsene fans and if he fails to deliver those three years might not last just as long.

Great Day, loads of Old School Arsenal about on Saturday, saw a few people I a'int seen in years at the game. The game was mental, we never do things easy over The Arsenal. Wenger and The Team proved me wrong, Well done I am happy to eat humble pie. Great to see so many Arsenal Fans enjoying our FA Cup Victory. Now Mr Wenger Splash the Cash and lets challenge for more trophies next year

Amos: if only it were so simple and clear. Yes taken at face value it is an achievement but the club has more resources than most others. They charge the highest prices moreorless. They have had several chances to win things but have blown it spectacularly. They have been eviscerated in games this season that should never happened. No one beats Man u ,Chelsea or Citeh by a cricket score. They were humiliated by United some years ago. So yes if you ignore all that it looks pretty good.

Allybear - with you all the way on that. I put Wenger completely out of my head on Saturday as it was the only way I could really enjoy it, and although I would have hated seeing us lose the final I can't help but wonder if he would have resigned had we lost. So now we have him for 3 more years and we have to hope that he changes his ways and we see some proper investment in the squad, the end of gung ho / tippy tappy football and that ridiculous zonal marking which nearly cost us the final. Like you I can't forgive him for the last 9 years - the thrashings from our supposed equals and the humiliations to lower league teams. I can't see him changing though can you?

There were problems at turnstile K as well. There was also a thieving scum bag who singled out and sneaked up behind a man and pinched tickets from his pocket and legged it.Although the man gave chase, the pickpocket was long gone. If the poor fella is reading this, I hope you got in to see the game in the end.

@Tony Evans hi mate im genuinely delighted to have won the cup but i stop at being happy for Wenger. To me unfortunately he is in charge for another 3yrs which will please his ever forgiving fans. This win to me does not exonerate him for the embarrasing defeats and bad signings and it remains to be seen if there will be a challenge for the Premier next season.

@Jeff, Picking a side once the FA Cup 3rd round kicks in on the first week in Jan, I'd always pick our strongest side for the adjacent PL fixtures. Guilty as charged. The PL has to be our priority. I backed AFC to win the FA Cup at 5/1 after we beat our neigbours so I'm very grateful for our success. I also backed the final to end in a draw after 90 mins so I don't wear rose coloured glasses. I cannot see the point of continually picking our manager to pieces because after the event everybody is wise. On Saturday, he gambled on his subs and it paid off, good for him, as he would have been slaughtered had we lost.

A great result in the end and fully deserved. In line with an earlier post from Westlower are the refs instructed not to award Arsenal Penalties against Hull two nailed on, on Saturday, one at their place which was so blatant. So we scored 3, missed a sitter hit the bar and had other great opportunities which we did not finish. It was mental torture but brought so much joy and did remove that 9 year wait that has been used to lash us. I wonder what Parry, Tyler and co will now say "perhaps only one trophy in nine years" has anyone noticed how Tyler's voice goes up in volume when teams score against us compared to his voice when we score check out Jacks first goal at Villa Park. We totally deserved this victory but I still despair at the lessons not learnt, the slow start! Why? We gave them the initiative and then almost paid a heavy price, this ability not to learn is still a major concern. Also Per's and Fabianski at the end pure torture! I have wavered a lot in regards to Wenger but can not deny I was really pleased for him on Saturday for all his faults he also has many positives. I am presuming he will now sign his contract but he does need to build and utilise the funds, the weaknesses are clear I just hope he wakes up to them. We are close, two or three quality players and a smarter game plan away from home i.e. our full backs being far more conservative. Failure to do this will result in further anguish and divide the fan base. Our club is close, the move, the fan base the FA cup now Wenger must behave like a manager who wants to be the best.

Westie,I have noted a few FAC knockers like yourself on here, and elsewhere, have now changed tune about after years of trumpeting the party line that it was not worth the effort to bother with the FAC and that 4th place was more important. . No negativity from me I suggested earlier in the season that the FAC was a possible season saver for us with Wenger's elusive dream of winning the European Cup again looking doomed to fade away like morning mist on a sunny day in Provence. The Prem with our squad also was just a Badarse type' pipe dream '. Obviously the relief for Wenger supportrs that after 9 years he has finally won the same trophy that he last did is a big relief ,I was happy for him as well and for the club and supporters. It doesn't change my view however that he should now bow out before the FAC euphoria evaporates in the harsh realities of a new season.

I think that I might have nearly recovered from my nerves being totally battered as I was a complete emotional wreck after two hours of intense theatre. Delighted for every Gooner on the planet as I expect that a good number have not yet witnessed success on the field, coupled with the fact that this is the first trophy in the cabinet at Ashburton. Also good to have the last laugh at the main UK media outlets who gave the Cup Final minimal pre-event coverage, and what there was of it did not favour The Arse. Westlower made a good point by suggesting that the odious Mike Riley may well have been behind Probert's abysmal performances by instructing him not to book anybody for agrigcultural challenges (which only invite more) and not to point to the spot under any circumstances. It's now time to re-charge batteries for three months and not give a toss about forthcoming meaningless internationals.

Bard, 'galvanized' and Wenger are not words that sit well together! Anyway for those who optimistically believe that Wenger will change tack on signing top players ,here is what Arsene said about this very thing . First of all we have to wait until the World Cup is over ,no business is done until then. We have to wait ( note 'wait') until we see what Fabianski and Sagna do. ( Even though we already know this ?) Wenger drones on ( yawn) adding that, afterwards we have to bring in two or three players to strengthen the squad ( yipeee ! This sounds better but hey let's calm down now because Arsene soon gets back to dithering again) Arsene warns us that ... " Unfortunately ,everywhere we go there are many teams in the market so it will not be easy." This is called ,getting in the excuses early, you have been warned.

Finally! A great result and one that, despite the bad start, we ultimately deserved. It was like watching the whole of Arsenal's season compressed into 90 minutes though; poor set piece defending, Ozil anonymous, Giroud nearly there but not quite, a heart-in-the-mouth moment from the keeper and then Ramsey rescuing the day. Happy for Wenger to stay on condition of more signings this summer.

WestieI didn't realise the Stones were football pundits ! Yes teams are always evolving but not always in the right direction. I think that most supporters will echo your view Gaz about using the FAC win for a springboard to future success. City of course will say the same after their Prem and LC double, and others will also find reasons for optimism, we are not in a club of one in that respect. Once again on Saturday Wenger was forced to change his tippy tacky tactics that just do not work away from the Emirates, where we fortunately played all of our FAC games,it was also noticeable in the Barca v Atletico title decider in the Nou Camp that Barca, the doyens of tika taka, were forced to ditch it and even resorted to hoofing the ball route one . Tika taka really is yesterdays news and apart from buying new players Wenger will also have to come up with some new tactics for the Champions League qualifier tie (anyone any idea of who we may face ? ) and in the Prem and Europe ,if he is going to take on younger and more up to date managers and beat them. With his new 8m a year wages to be signed and sealed leaks about a 100m war chest are again appearing and despite Wenger taking another swipe at City's financial clout Wenger looks set to sell them another top player for big bucks ,even winning the FAC has not helped that, you couldn't make it up.

@Moscow Gooner: I certainly don't think Arsene has proved me wrong. He's made some huge mistakes and been in charge of some of this Clubs greatest ever defeats and whatever happens I'll never sway from my opinion that trophies could and should have been won sooner. But like every single football fan out there I'm as fickle as f*ck and always looking for a way rounfd the negatives! Therefore I'm looking at this weekend as another 'game changer' and trully believe the whole Club-but especially Arsene-will use this to press on and deliver a new era of success...

@Bard, The development of any team is dynamic. Players improve with age & experience, new players come in, others move out, injuries can upset the balance. However, we will be approaching next season with increased self confidence. How many new coaches will our neighbours employ in the next 3 years? Give me the AFC managerial mandate every time. Well, it wouldn't be the Arsenal if we didn't do it the hard way! And oh! the irony that a marked change in tactics in both key games swung things our way. So, on to the next challenge - getting Wenger to part with that (suppose) £100m transfer kitty. Sadly, i'm not holding my breath.

Joy!Joy!Joy! Another trophy winning date added to the others on the surrounds at the Emirates. Can't believe the negative s**t from the media.(actually I can)After slaughtering us for not winning a trophy the begrudging morose 'big deal'response to our win was disgusting. I can now look forward to the World Cup warmed and comforted by seeing those beautiful red and white shirts holding up the FA Cup.I can look forward to the player (s) that Arsenal will sign in the summer. I only hope and pray that next season Arsene adapts his tactics to sometimes take into account the strength of the opposition. If he does then the Premiership can be won. Arsene is an intelligent bloke so I hope he has realised that if we had gone down 2-0 against City,Chelsea etc we would not have been parading in Islington yeaterday. So just a little bit of caution could go a long way next year. Wow, yesterday I had the proper beer blues. It was such a strange feeling as I didn't want the day to be over. Saturday was pure ecstasy. I comforted myself thinking that on Monday morning my brain would be back to normal but I've just watched the celebrations again on the internet and it has genuinely made me cry. Again. This win has been the best feeling in my opinion. I was only ten when we won at anfield, so for me this the most glorious feeling. I have comforted myself each May for the last few years saying that when we do win something , the years of hurt will make it special. How special it was! Black stock road was fantastic and it showed how true and good our supporters are. It's the relief, the pride and the feeling of pleasure to Wenger. I'm far from his biggest fan, but I have been with him for 18 years and seeing him a winner again is the way it should be. Please can we have this again? 49 49 undefeated....

A classic Arsenal cup final for me. In Australia these usually start at 1.00 AM, where I'm sitting through the night at some cross road point in my life, so that whatever happens elation or disappointment will be more intensely felt because there is nothing I can do to influence what happens on the field. I stayed calm through this one. Perhaps it was because I am now older and ha ha wiser, or it could have been that it didn't matter as much as it once might have. After all FA cup final success is easily forgotten six games into a new season if the team going badly. Whatever happens on the night there are still the same problems to be resolved. At the same time, even 0-2 down I thought it would be a game where anything could change quickly either way,so I just sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the moment. And it was a wonderful moment to see an Arsenal captain lift a trophy, even the almost forgotten bench warmer. It was great theatre. The relief, mixed with a feeling of embarrassment among the management was warming, although I still don't trust that lot. There is hope for next year but the squad will need careful pruning and an injection of new talent.

Can any Gooner not be absolutely overjoyed at finally ending the trophy drought? If you are still moaning, you must be a Spurs fan in disguise. We may yet gripe on Wenger's transfers come next season but for now, the dreaded monkey is off our backs as it's time to celebrate.

I have been one of the most strident in criticising AW over the past few years - never thought we'd see another trophy under his 'reign', but he proved me and many others wrong: we don't know yet if this weekend is a false dawn or the start of a great new era, but the final yesterday and the parade today were both something special after years of near misses and falling at the final hurdle. They certainly meant much more to me than say 1993 or 2003. When success is routine you take cup finals and parades for granted (but let's hope that feeling comes back!) And to those who downplay the FA Cup, and say that 'big clubs' don't take it seriously, hard to believe that Man City didn't care how they did against Wigan last year or this or that Chelsea weren't up for it - or that Liverpool weren't pissed off about going down to us at the Emirates: they're still whinging about that game... It still matters and yesterday's final was a superb global advert for the competition.

I would just like to say that you all have probably say moreorless what I think about the team, the game and the manager...! But I was working for the game as I do in many Arsenal games playing at home...I saw a different type of fans on Saturday...the ones that we used to see and hear every other match day! I just wonder the they all have been because I was hearing good arsenal chants that I never heard during normal matchday! Is it because these fans don't attend or are not ST holders anymore?!!! We need more of that during matchdays and more noise to let the other teams know that we are here and not scared! I was proud that I am an Arsenal fan because there was no issues with Arsenal fans! So to all of you Thank You and keep it up! Hope we hear the new chants in the stadium when playing at home so the tourists ST holders can get the nag of it and sing it when the team need it!

More an elephant than either a monkey or gorilla. But it's gone now. I'm trying hard to analyse my range of emotions over the last 24 hours. Suffice to say that I now have a feeling of satisfaction and can at least look forward with some optimism to next season. For now I'm just going to enjoy the moment and suggest you all stop worrying, have another beer or whatever and do the same.

@ Lee afc - don't worry mate, the only predictable and boring ones are the people who come on here the day after a glorious cup final win, having waited 9 years, and STILL manage to find a downside. I seriously don't know why they bother. I suggest they read today's Arseblog and take his advice. No amount of party pooper 'papering over the cracks' will taint the pleasure I'm still feeling today and will for some time. Yesterday was one of the best days of being an Arsenal fan, and I'm no spring chicken. As Mathew Bazzel correctly says, a lot of old school Arsenal were out in numbers, which added to the pleasure of it all. It rolled back the years. 'Roll out the red carpet' ...

It always amuses me that anyone thinks that Santi's free kick could, or should, have been saved. Go and stand in a goal and imagine that ball arrowing towards you. It was a brilliant and unstoppable goal. The Hull keeper did well to even get a hand to it. By the way, no one should underestimate the contribution Giroud made throughout the game. His touch and passing at times was sublime and as for the lay-off to Ramsey it was pure class. Just got back from the celebrations, great atmosphere and still buzzing!!

Gaz, dead right this is what it's all about, Ramsey said it himself yesterday minutes after the final whistle, it's also has been said on here on numerous occasions over the years, but some fans and i'm referring to a wide range of the fan base were quite happy as long as we played pretty football and entertained even if we won nothing.Did those players that were celebrating and spraying moet on the pitch yesterday and waving and cheering on the open top bus today get greater satisfaction out of celebrating scraping in third or fourth for another imaginary trophy or celebrating a genuine/real one yesterday that can be filled with moet? or indeed the fans that celebrated fourth place with them? I guarantee they didn't, the real thing is what it's all about and lets hope there are many more of them.

Oh what a difference winning a REAL trophy makes instead of Wenger's imaginary 4th place trophy the one he places about the FA cup at the start of every season.I have never seen 250,000 people on the streets of North London to celebrate 4th.Fans want silverware not healthy balance sheets and being told be happy we finished 4th again.Take note Wenger and Gazidis.Yesterday will mean nothing if we have another disastrous transfer window this summer. This team is still 4 quality players short of being real title contenders. We desperately need a commanding DM as Arteta cant cut it anymore and we need a world class striker which Giroud patently isnt.As for Ozil i have been disappointed with him if he is worth £42m how much is the brilliant Rambo worth?

'Come into the light Carol Anne-er, I mean Gaz.' Hi buddy, glad you had a good day. Phew it was touch and go though, wasn't it? Don't expect AFC to be a rocket ship to the moon. We are unlikely to go running around with a cheque book this summer, buying here, there and everywhere-love that track-it will be strategic and careful I think. I do expect Sanogo to develop and Arsene will run with that outlook next season. Gnabry should improve and a couple of replacements are accepted as a standard approach. The rest may be the usual scene of fans wandering around in a fog, wishing and hoping-liked that song too-perhaps with a welcome surprise twist. I am excited by next seasons prospects, even though the picture is very fuzzy at the moment. Cannot wait to see a full page spread of the team with the glistening FA Cup standing on the floor in front of Arsene, with the headline, 'FA Cup Winners 2014'. Special Announcement: The Online Gooner Amateur Dramatics Class production of 'Tarzan' has been cancelled, as the Tigers drifted off heartbroken, and the monkey kept falling off Tarzan's back.

I'm not entirely sure where to start!!! The last 36 hours have been a bit of a blur with so many different thoughts and emotions going through my head!!! Ok, lets start with the game. We don't half know how to make things difficult for ourselves don't we! And let's be blunt-if we'd gone 2 down to a better side than Hull we ain't winning the game. It's a recurring problem we just have to sort at some point or we'll be waiting another 9 years for the next trophy. Apart from that what else is there to discuss. We won, Ramsey was great, the celebrations were fantastic and I was genuinely happy to see Arsene look like a great weight had been removed from his shoulders. For me the game itself is nothing compared to the ramifications of actually winning another trophy though. Part of me is inclined to say it's 'only' the FA cup and as a trophy it's not quite what it was. Hardly any of the top sides take it seriously any more (never mind the smaller ones!) and it's certainly not the kind of trophy we were promised when we moved to the cash cow that is the Emirates. But that would be both churlish and very wrong. Forget the size of the trophy-that's just not important. What is important is that we finally won one! Every single player and fan that celebrated that win yesterday and today now knows exactly what it's like to win a REAL trophy again. Sod the imaginary ones-the real ones are what being involved in football is all about. I can't deny I never celebrated as much as I might of a few years ago but I absolutely recognise the importance of yesterday and am genuinely happy we won. Enjoyed all of the celebrations and even decided to go to the parade today with my daughter. Ok we missed most of it but just soaking up the atmosphere and being around so many happy Gooners made it worthwhile. Because when all is said and done today/last night is what it's absolutely all about! You don't do 'today' when you finish fourth or announce you've made a big profit!! All of that is a load of crap compared to actually winning something! So where do we go from here? Well you all know how I feel about Wenger and I stand by everything I've said and thought over the past few years. If I've gone over the top at times it's only because I care so much about this Club. But I'm willing to give it all another go because I genuinely now believe winning yesterday will see a quicker return to winning the BIG trophies than Wenger leaving and being replaced. Don't get me wrong-I still believe if he'd left in 2006 we'd have won a trophy under a different manager by now but that never happened, he's staying, so it's a pointless discussion. I now believe yesterday will invigorate the whole Club and act as a real catalyst for future success. I believe we'll see yesterday as the 'end of the beginning' and today we start a new era for this Club. But let's be under no illusions here. The squad as it is is good enough for fourth and a Cup win but no more. For Arsene to seize the moment and the initiative he has to buy big and he has to buy early this summer. We have to start beating our rivals and if we're going to be in the champions league I want to start feeling that the club think they can actually win it. I've been here before-I realise that. But in all honesty I'm just so desperate to start enjoying my Arsenal again that I'm willing to believe anything. And with the buzz of being at that parade still fresh in my mind I want to start believing in Arsene Wenger again...

I think yesterdays win will make Wenger even more stubborn. Yesterday showed how wrong he was in taking the FA cup so lightly over the last 9 years for his virtual 4th trophy. When did the fans ever celebrate a 4th place finish like a cup win.History is made on winning trophies not entry into a competition we have no chance of winning.Just think how many FA and League cups we could have won if we took them seriously over the last 9 years. It was fitting that Aaron was the matchwinner he has been our player of the season by miles even though he has missed 4 months of the season. This summer we need an experienced back up keeper,a RB,a CB,a DM and please god a 25 league goal a season striker and not bought on the cheap. But as i said at the start it wont happen Wenger will say he won a trophy having not signed a striker last summer and in january. Finally a big thank you to Bacary Sagna for 7 years of being Arsenal's Mr Reliable you will be missed

The declining standards of the match officials gives cause for concern. Was Mr Probert under orders from Mike Riley not to issue yellow cards in the first half & not to award penalties at any time? The world wide audience must have been shaking their heads in disbelief whenever the ref turned a blind eye to an obvious offence. British match officials the most honest in the world? Yesterday's poor display gives much cause for doubt.

I think flappy resolved any questions about if he should stay or not We just cannot go out and win a final 4 nil can we though, arsenal always have to put us through the mill.re AW not leaving the bench,I don't think you are allowed to coach from the sides, and the players should not need to be shouted at every 10 mins.very strange interview with AW on ITV just after final whistle. He seemed very relieved, and,I wonder had he decided to go if we had not won or was worried about the reaction of fans if hull had of won.anyway I thought it was our year after we beat the spuds ,yet it could of been more.a good sign to supporters would be quick decisive action in the transfer market including two top players. Let me get on to Ozil. Yes he has not shown why hes worth 42 million pounds yet CONSISTENTLY. He has in spells. He needs to sort out hes body language that is probably the most stunning aspect of hes game that is so annoying to watch. He seems to always look grumpy if something he was trying does not come off smh. I read in an article that he was told about that by the likes of by Joachim Low, and even wenger that he needs to work on hes body language. To me he does have an arrogance about him as well. I remember reading an article that said he has 5 million followers on twitter I'm one by the way lol and that he has more facebook likes than arsenal lol. He has like 18 million likes. So that can breed a type of arrogance. Look when he went to Real madrid he went after that great season he had for Wender Bremen and that great world cup run for germany. He went for 15 million so there was really no pressure to perform well. He had no become world class than he was considered a bright young talent. He then became world class over the last 3 years at real madrid and for me that has seemed to have gone to hes head. Hes need to start playing like how he did when he was at real madird and was not a star and you also forget he wa snot even the main guy at real madrid of course not as it was the great ronaldo. He was playing with players on a much higher caliber than what he is at arsenal so he never got stick if he played bad as he was not the main guy. also he never went to real madrid for a massive Price tag i.e bale. Some folks already where bashing bale in madrid earlier on in the season as they thought he was a flop. Look I thing we have to give Ozil time, next season is a big season for him. He has to show why he is touted as a assist master and he also needs to score more goals. Also I also think he has yet to really jell with hes teammates yet at arsenal. I dont see a connection there between him and the non germans. He has to deliver though next season as he would have had time to bed into english football which is completely different to anything he saw in spain. A foul in spain is not a fowl here lol. You have to get up and take it like a man. I actually think the likes of inesita and xvai would struggle in the prem as the pace is so different to anything they have faced before week in week out. Also over there a litle touch on the ankle is foul its not here. A shoulder barge here is allowed in spain is a foul lool. BIG,BIG DIFFERENCE and Ozil has had a baptism of fire this season.

WOW,WOW. What an escape phew. So happy we won as we needed to get that monkey off our backs as was the typical abuse we got from the other lot. Damm was that a almighty escape. We got lucky that we were playing HULL and not the other teams who have stuffed us when they have scored early goals like the way we started i.e man citeh,c chelski and loserpool. I dont think we would have come back against those teams.Again the early start disasters what is going on with this team?? What our they doing before the games?? They look flat and Hull came out pumped out and took the initiative, we looked scared and looked like we had not been PREPARED AGAIN??? So happy we won though. We needed to win to believe we can win stuff again. We also need to invest big in the summer. We have a couple of players who our just not good enough; Giroud, Arteta, Gibbs etc. We need more than that just not good enough. Giroud boy oh boy where to i start lol. The guys lack of pace is so worrying lol.He cant run lool. When have you ever seen Giroud breaking the line to run on to a through ball lool. I actually think the game changed when we brought on Sanogo even though he has never scored for us lol. He was able to change the way hull were thinking especially their back three. Thye had no problem pushing up especially with a player of giorud ability an dlack of pace. Every defender i have seen can out run Giroud smh. So defenders play a high line against us and push up as they dont fear girouds pace. He has no pace what so ever. Sanogo made them think more and he got in behind them more often he just does not have the ability to turn those in behind runs into goals. He is way raw. We need a striker in the summer I would take Benzema immediately if he became available. We also need a holding midfielder asap one that has pace and is powerful i.e anything other than arteta lol .It seems like Sanga is going to man city to sit on the bench big loss for us but if he goes that young guy from ivory coast looks good . Again im happy we won but wenger looked scared lool When we went down to two nil lol. He probably saw the writing on wall. The pressure he was under was immense he looked relived lol. Hes age also showed he looked frail as hell. Look i hope we buy the necessary players please we need to. I want us to compete for title. Alot of fans from other clubs our happy wenger is staying as they our basing their hopes on wenger not buying anyone of quality. That alone should tell you all you need to know. The man has to spend in the summer as it will be suicidal and when i mean spend i mean on genuine talent

Great atmosphere at the screening.I wondered what it would be like at the grove if they lowered the prices and let people sit where they liked every game {i know they cant do it}.There is an air of depression and pride up here although some of the hull fans are moaning that we are divers, that it was not a free kick or corner but forgetting about the the four dead cert penalties we should of had.I have never seen so many drunk people that were around the stadium apart from ladies day at Beverley races.

Yes, a brilliant day and coupled with the great weather we Gooners should just take a couple of days to savour our silverware after so long without any (I'm getting to be an old man now). But maybe we should all reurn to this forum in two weeks time to look back at the season minus the euphoria. Sober analysis will tell me that we also blew a chance to be league champions again... But for the next week or so let's enjoy what we've got and bring on those Spurs and Chelsea fans (who've won, er, naff-all this time), though the first Totts chap I saw in the pub at lunchtime went scuttling off to the toilet as soon as he saw me. My prediction that Hull would be outclassed and Ramsey would be man of the final both came true . No surprises in all of this but it was an enthralling FAC final ,and one that has put the old competition back on the radar screen,at least for now . I thought that Santi ,who always does well against lower opponents, was actually our best player , he dragged us back into the game with his cunning free-kick and looked well fired up for the fray , no doubt reflecting on the fact that had he moved to Atletico last season when they were touting his name about, that he would have a La Liga title winners medal in his bag and playing in the big- eared cup final next weekend . Whatever,he got a medal in the end anyway and after our calamitous league collapse looked relieved to do so. If the claims that beating Hull ,a very ordinary side, has any bearing on our future prospects is a matter for conjecture ,without significant investment in our squad, and Wenger improving his tactical nous,he won't as Arteta admitted, get away with giving top teams and managers a 2 goal start, that seems unlikely. Other clubs are already buying players while Arsene basking in the cup win dithers on doing so and says that he will leave it until after the World Cup and his French TV work on it is done. Ozil looked disinterested again yesterday another 4 out of 10 rating from him. Wenger should be looking at off-loading the clown and using the money from this to buy a top striker with, we clearly still need one.

Jus re watched the game. I know everyone favours the underdogs on FA Cup final day, but the penalties not given are ridiculous. Giroud is grabbed by the throat, Livermore practically catches the ball, and Santi firstly has his legs taken from under him, before being shoved in the back. ITV predictably focused on whether it should have been an Arsenal corner (that Kos scored from) rather than our penalty shouts. Expect the media to switch to "Arsenal have only won the FA Cup in the last 10 years"! Sod em, let's do some real business in the transfer market, pay Bac what he wants, and actually compete for the PL title next season. COYG

Monkey Kev? more like a bloody gorilla but it's off now and lets hope it stays off, lets hope it doesn't take as long again and this isn't yet another false dawn. There is a genuine chance now to push on now and put this club back where it belongs witnessing scenes like yesterday, and today, with the victory parade. Like our hero of the day Ramsey said yesterday this is what it's all about. There's a lot of had work to be done now to get us there and lets hope it's carried out. But it can wait for a while until we finish celebrating and that could be quite a while. My god they put us through the ringer again, not waking up until it was nearly to late and we've got Gibbs to thank for that, for that alone he should have got MOTM but it's hard to disagree with Ramsey but it was a fantastic come back and no thanks to flappy who nearly cost us big time but to be fair he did make some good saves throughout, and as others have already said we showed genuine spirit and mental strength in doing it, well done to everybody and thoroughly deserved. So we have silverware at last, a real trophy we can see, and of course the dropped the lid, one we can add to the others around the inside of the stadium, the the old girl herself, what a feeling, the scenes on the pitch and in the stands were fantastic, ecstasy is a good description a real reason to bounce and spray the champagne and indeed they did and are still doing it and so are the fans judging by the victory parade, who said the FA Cup means nothing? Onwards and upwards now, there can be no other way i'm sure we all want to witness more scenes like yesterday and today, and to quote our next captain, it's what it's all about.

Well done to the team, at last a real trophy. Perhaps the media can now fixate on Newcastle(45 years) or that lot down the road(23 years) not counting the mickey mouse cup which I am not. Great to see players like Rosicky and Sagna, who have been at the club for longer than most get their medals. That winning goal rounded off Ramsey's season superbly. Now can someone please just persuade our manager to part with some serious money to sign the players we all know we need for next season??

What a win! All my criticism will remain at bay for a little while. Maybe until we see who comes in this summer. Was dreaming Kroenke was whispering something to Sagna about his pay packet being accepted as he went up for the trophy celebration! I will miss him when he leaves! And Rambo! The heart of the team for sure! He outshone even our $40 million man too. Stil Ozil is a sublime passer and weights each pass perfectly. Wenger looked so happy and relieved. Success is so addicting. We cannot go backwards. This must be only the catalyst to greater things. Just hope we see that with a complete team next season!

jjetplane Not looking forward to the play offs next week I think we may well go down with the Jambos. Badarse I think Arteta had a good game as well but the ref was shocking any of those 4 penalty appeals had taken place outside the box he would have blown . Anyway at least the monkey is off the back lets hope we can kick on from here.

The non award of a couple of stonewall penalties, slow start aside, coming from behind on reflection makes it all the sweeter. The icing on the cake the winner scored by Aaron Ramsey to come back from the injury he sustained and look like a player you can build a team around testament to him.The wait is over lets build on it great day for everyone involved.

Glad we won, but I'm just not jubilant as I should be. We made it very difficult for ourselves, it's a travesty that our squad is as weak as it is. We know Wenger is staying, which will make some very happy (and others livid), but if a new civil war is to be avoided, the club has to improve the squad this summer. Don't tell us how financially sound the club is, show it by trying to beat City. Expect city, UTD, l'pool & cheksea to be stronger next year, so no excuses.....

That game yesterday encapsulated Arsenal's season in 120 minutes, cock ups, passages of great play, lethargic start, in short all the things we have complained and praised about over the past 9 months. You're quite right though Kev, had that been a top 8 team we would not of come back from 2 down (Unless it was the Spuds of course!) Sanogo is like "bar room brawler" no finesse, no style but he gave the Hull centre trio a real shake up and certainly created more room for Giroud and Ramsey - can't call him a striker yet until he scores a goal but he is real handful and with ballet lessons could become a proper player. Highbury's first trophy was the FA Cup - lets hope it is the springboard for more success and not just 4th place.

If that proves to have been Sagna's last game for Arsenal, I'm so glad that he's gone out on a high after two broken legs. I hope he decides to stay on.... Radio Five are currently crucifying Arsenal, and Arsene, but f*ck 'em this weekend, we won the FA Cup!!! And that's still as important to me as it was around 4am in New Zealand, May 1979 when I first saw my team lift the cup on the only live match shown on TV in those days. Fourteen trophies in my lifetime, hope it's a short wait for fifteen. This summer I'd like to see another left-back (Monreal doesn't cut it), right-back if Sagna goes (Jenkinson WILL be good enough in time), centre-half, two strikers and a fit Walcott & Wilshere.....

allybear 3 players would not of course do it but with radical changes in coaching we might retain the FAC next season but unless we can muster a stronger squad than Citeh it's gonna be bridesmaid to another Manky club. Still the sun is out, Athletico have shown how 'it' can be done and with Ramsey homaging CG in the sun the season ends a lot better than it has for Hibs ......... Oh well - time for a dip in the Channel before the chicken. Aaron Ramsey hey - who would have thought he would be worth ohhhh 75m? .....

We won the Cup!!! " Eee-eee-eee", 'CRASH'! That was the monkey off our back. Ten successive decades of trophy winning-unequalled! Five FA Cups for Arsene, eleven and the record shared for Arsenal. Mine and westlower's twenty seventh AFC Cup Final. A trip to Wembley pre-season against the Oilers for the Community Shield. A new silhouette marked 2014 for the inside of the Grove, and it's first trophy. One of perhaps just two FA Cup finals where a team has come from two down to win the cup. CL football again. Sanogo showed well, but Aaron the man. Good tactical move by Arsene with the substitutions-love 4-4-2. Ref tried to keep the game flowing as he allowed Hull to break it up-eccentric, or what? Team showed a great togetherness-the fans can learn a lesson from that example. Dismayed to hear of the tribulations of our national stadium, but again, not surprised by them. Rocky RIP, did you get to dance on the table? I missed you because I fell off and rolled under it, giggling to myself uncontrollably for ages. The wave of relief from Arsene, the players and us fans was like a tsunami washing over everything. Arteta had a good game too, despite what others might say. EAST UPPER you have a great posting voice, unlike me, ha ha. Just seen your post Rocky RIP, our dancing on the table together shall have to remain a virtual reality one, but I will give you the biggest, winning virtual hug too. I can feel your joy Young Gun. Good old Arsenal.

Delighted we won a trophy and hard earned. Some on here are saying get 3 new players and 'we could dominate for years'! Please dont get carried away with 1 win. So all the failings and hammerings are forgotten? Unfortunately AW is staying. This team needs more than 3 new players.

Yes of course Alsace, when things go wrong it's the managers fault, when things go right it's due to the players. Even at a moment of great triumph you continue your dull tirade against the manager.

Superb day! I didn't have a ticket, but managed to find the best pub I reckon there is in terms of old school Gooners sharing the love of Arsenal - The Bank of Friendship. Anyone else in there too? It was quality. The DJ played some superb tunes, including 'Roll out the red carpet', 'Forever in our shadow' etc. The place went nuts. A collective release of frustration and joy. I'm sure it was the same all over the world. I came home soaked and my new trainers are ruined already - but I really don't care. We won. It's what makes following Arsenal worthwhile.

Ha ha On Friday I posted that Arsenal fans would be late to their seats, there would be a 3-2 score and we would concede in the first 20 minutes! If I could do that with the lottery WESTIE .... As for the figure first to the post match interview - step forward Ramseyman. This guy has it all. Vision, temperament and the ability to hit the ball in a number of ways. Not too much of a stretch to see him teaming up with players like Messi. Best thing we have had since Fabregas but with his cultural knowingness (speaks Welsh, wears the flag) he is a better player because he does not have a dark side to let him down. On to the match which was a classic of carnival propensities. 2-0 down after 8 minutes against Hull did Arsenal a favour. As you mention - very little communication between coaching staff and players leaving Arsenal on the pitch to come over all 'soft bop improviso' with all the notes off the scale. The 40m man was shown up as an utterly cosmetic artiste who try as he might to get dirty - comes away looking dis-in terested and somewhat arrogant. So, the 2-0 gave the players something to do and telling when Carzola did score he was screaming at the 'highbury henries' to turn up the sound. Up til that point he a few others were hardly mentioned. Great free kick though the goalie should have palmed it away. It was low enough. Hull were amazing with what they have but could not deal with Arsenal's passing game which was nowhere near what it had been in previous rounds. So as much as the spirit of Philip Larkin turned up in the first 8 minutes, wha tthat did was turn it into a game where some Arsenal players showed their colours. The talk is now that there is a push on from this with more players and what has to be a radical coaching transformation. Arsene Wenger cannot do this with a philosophy that ended with Viera putting that penalty away. No resting on laurels then as I see Rodgers is already up for buying Southampton 'wholesale'. That is what we should be doing now - 3 players - 100m and 'a director of football' who should be someone like Overmars. Peace .... oh Markie Markie / .... Overmars. Must say - good to see Wenger looking happy for once. Even funnier if he had had his shirt ripped off him. What was that lovely moment whe he came back down the wrong steps. Oh the metaphors Mr Larkin ...

This game was won despite the Manager's tactical flaws which have been all too apparent again this season, HOWEVER the team dug themselves out of it and we simply have to enjoy the moment however much we may want things organised differently next time. We actually won something. That is a fitting reward for team improvement this season. It was very nice to see certain individuals get their medals. I wonder how it fellt to Stan Kronke to actually win a trophy?

thank god Hull retreated into their shell when they were 2-0 up. I cannot understand Bruce's claim that the first goal we scored was not a foul but credit to the referree for not booking the Hull players who spent so much time comming in late and then feigning injury. It was also good of him to miss a blantant hand ball and two clear fouls in the penalty area. The commentary from Warnock/Owen was pathetic-so bias I turned the sound off. So we did not play well but we still won. Now Wenger must be courageous in the transfer windoiw and buy 2 new strikers a top top quality holding midfield player and a replacement for Sagna and one for Vermalen. Sadly unlike winning the cup this will not happen and I await the free tranfer list with interest.

Why do it the easy way when you can give everyone a heart attack en route. Hull turned up yesterday and meant business, it's a pity some of the Arsenal players didn't. Having said that we wouldn't have it any other way and this is the reason we love the club. I'm chuffed to bits to finally break this 9 year bollocks. We now need to go have a good transfer window and can start by offering Sagna the money and contract he deserves! Losing him would be a step backwards. For now I need to get rid of this hangover, as I suppose most of us do this morning. Up the Gunners!

  96. ARSENE'S LOOK OF DISBELIEF

Arsene's eyes told their own story. He thought he'd seen everything, so did we. Hope SAF has called him to welcome him into the veterans victors gallery. As a critic of Arsene I'm so delighted to see the joy in his face. His substitutions WON that final! I also hope Mourinho calls him too.

Good report Kevin and the gritty come back appears to be symptomatic of the revitalised Arsenal with it's Anglo/German core providing much needed steel and spirit. Theo Jensen's post sums it up, get the required players signed Arsene so that we can reflect on the final half dozen games of the season and hopefully enjoy a stress and moan free close season. Well done the lads.

Phew we got there in the end, but it is plain to see major investment is needed.replacements for fab and sagna, tall fast muscular nasty git in midfield, a central defender, a left winger, cover for walcott on the right and 2-3 forwards- 1 world class. And an end to this moronic zonal marking tatic! But well done!

What a win from the team! I was questioning whether the 10-11 team even with RvP and Fabregas would have had the mettle to come back from that turbulent start to the match. Ramsey characterises what this new team is about now- we're building around British players who support the club and combining it with real finesse. For those who remember me writing an article a few months ago about Olivier Giroud being a poor lone striker but a great second striker, was yesterday not even more proof of that? Sanogo coming on completely liberated him, giving him the license to roam freely and pull their defense around. With a star striker, a new winger and a holding midfielder we could really dominate for years to come. A great day for all gooners after nine years of waiting!

Wenger was a sight to behold. a broken, crumpled old man at 0-2 down and a revitalised man in the prime of managerial life once the cup was lifted. Hopefully a collective monkey off everyones backs, some serious team strengthening in the summer (sorted out early!!) and a more robust challenge for the Big Two titles. 5 FA Cup wins for Le Boss has an impressive ring to it.
