Three Things We Learned from Arsenal's final Premier League match of the season at Southampton

Here's Ian Mills with his analysis after Mikel Arteta's Arsenal beat already relegated Southampton

Here are three things that stood out for our Gooner Fanzine print writer in his regular series.

1 - Kieran Tierney signs off in style

- Rarely can a player leaving Arsenal still in their prime years and on a free transfer have been sent on their way with such heartfelt good wishes (take note Liverpool fans eh?)

Our Scottish left back signed a pre contract with his beloved Celtic back in January and he returns there next month thereby ending his six year stay at the Gunners.

Injuries have blighted his time in England yet when fit he always gave everything for the club and I know I am not alone thinking that when his first joined he would eventually captain the side, sadly things did not quite work out that way.

However, it is fitting that he not only started his final game for the club at centre back (yet again displaying his willingness to play anywhere to help the side). He also signed off with a goal with a clever finish from Ben White’s pass.

Mikel Arteta commented afterwards that Tierney had told him on the day before the game that he would score in his final Arsenal appearance and so it came to pass.

Given that only a serious injury suffered at the Euros prevented his probable departure last summer, it is a remarkable feat that he went on to feature 19 times this season. His goal here was the sixth of his Gunners’ career and he celebrated it thoroughly as did his teammates who were delighted for him.

Thank you, Kieran, you will be missed and the best of luck for the future.

2 - Raya shares Golden Glove award

– David Raya has experienced far more testing afternoons than this one yet he will be frustrated that he could not add to his 13 clean sheets in the Premier League.

Despite that setback, he still earned the status of joint winner of the Golden Gloves award (along with Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels) – in so doing he becomes the first Arsenal goalkeeper ever to win the trophy in consecutive seasons.

He has been one of our most consistent players all campaign and his capacity to make a double save due to his lightening fast reflexes has been a real standout in his performances during this term.

3 - Second again Ole Ole

– Sunday's victory also confirmed that we finished as Premier League Runners-up for the third consecutive season, the last time that happened was between 1999 and 2001, which was then followed by the double in 2002.

The huge difference between that side and the current one is that the 2002 double winners contained several players from the 1998 double winning side and that team had also reached the 2000 UEFA Cup and 2001 FA Cup finals.

I remember as I stood shell shocked at the Millenium Stadium after Liverpool had somehow escaped with a 2-1 win in 2001 there were two fellow Gooners almost in tears asking if we would ever win another trophy.

The current side of course still have the most important one, the first trophy, to win together.

I still believe if they can claim that first piece of silverware more will follow yet time is ticking on Arteta’s fabled ‘Process’ and next season really must deliver silverware for the club.

A huge summer awaits.
