Prologue

Arsenal and Newcastle both eased past lower league opponents in the Carabao Cup during the week.

Eddie Howe's holders beat Bradford City 4-1 at St James' Park, while Mikel Arteta Gunners - who the Magpies swept past 4-0 over their two legged semi-final clash last February - won 2-0 at Port Vale. 

The week before Arsenal posted an excellent 2-0 win over Athletic Club in Bilbao to kick-off their Champions League campaign, while the Magpies lost 2-1 at home to a Marcus Rashford-inspired Barcelona as their top table European adventure ended in defeat. 

While Arsenal have only conceded two goals in five Premier League matches this term so far - with a win at Newcastle set to power the north Londoners back to second spot - Howe's Geordies have failed to hit the heights they attained last season when winning their first piece of domestic silverware in 70 years.

They currently sit in a lowly 16th spot, struggling to cope with the damaging loss of their talisman striker Alexander Isak.

Isak scored in the first leg of the teams last four clash back in February, as well as grabbing the winner against the Gunners in the league clash last November. 

Sunday's full-blooded clash promises to be an intruiguing encounter in front of a no doubt raucous St James' Park, as Arsenal aim to post an away win over the Newcastle for the first time since May 2023.

Anthony Gordon is set to return to Premier League action serving a three-game suspension for his red card during the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Liverpool on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Boss Howe has rotated recently but is set to select Nick Pope, Sandro Tonali, new signing Nick Woltemade and Valentino Liveramento, while Joe Willock could play a part against his former team. 

Arsenal 

Gunners boss Arteta insists captain Martin Odegaard could be fit enough to start. The Norway international initially injured his shoulder during the 5-0 win over Leeds last month, before being forced off during the 1-1 draw vs Manchester City last weekend after hurting it again.

Eberechi Eze could start after scoring his first goal in Gunners colours during the League Cup win at Vale Park.
