Alessia Russo scores but Lionesses defeated by Spain; Stina Blackstenius hits hat-trick for Sweden

Four Arsenal players featured for England against a Spain outfit including Gunners star Mariona Caldentey

Alessia Russo found the net but substitute Claudia Pina’s brace saw England defeated 2-1 by Spain to end their Nations League campaign.

Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Russo all started for the Lionesses, with Russo racing in behind before finishing calmly past Barcelona goalkeeper Cata Coll in the 22nd minute.

Chloe Kelly replaced Mead in the second half, as Pina netted twice in ten minutes to seal Spain’s place as group winners. Mariona Caldentey played the entire game, having picked up an assist last time out against Belgium.

England manager Sarina Wiegman will name her 23-player squad for Euro 2025 on Thursday.

Elsewhere, Champions League final hero Stina Blackstenius scored a hat-trick to help Sweden thrash Denmark 6-1, as well as picking up an assist. Lina Hurtig, who departed Arsenal at the end of the season, was on target late on.
