Euro 2025: Stina Blackstenius shines as Sweden dismantle Germany to top group

Arsenal striker Blackstenius scored her second goal of the tournament in a 4-1 win

Sweden delivered a statement performance in their final Euro 2025 group game, overpowering Germany 4-1 to make it three wins from three and claim top spot with authority. Stina Blackstenius was once again central to Sweden’s attack, her early equaliser setting the tone for a dominant display.

Germany had struck first through Jule Brand, who latched onto a through ball to finish smartly in the 7th minute. But Sweden responded almost immediately. Just five minutes later, Blackstenius raced in behind the defence and, with a calm reminiscent of her Champions League-winning goal, slotted past a rooted Ann-Katrin Berger to level the match.

Sweden never looked back. Their relentless counter-pressing forced errors, and they took the lead in the 25th minute through a deflected effort by Smilla Holmberg. The real turning point came just before half-time- a desperate handball on the goal line by Germany’s Carlotta Wamser led to a red card and a penalty, confidently dispatched by Fridolina Rolfö.

With Germany down to 10, Sweden took full control. Former Arsenal forward Lina Hurtig came off the bench in the second half and added a fourth in the 80th minute, finishing coolly from a Johanna Rytting Kaneryd cross to cap a ruthless display.

Blackstenius, subbed off in the 71st minute, had done her damage early: her presence, movement, and finishing once again proving decisive at the highest level.

Sweden’s 4-1 win not only knocked Germany out of rhythm but confirmed them as serious contenders. With maximum points and momentum on their side, Blackstenius and her teammates now await confirmation of their quarter-final opponent.
