It was a day to forget for Renée Slegers' side, who tell to their second consecutive defeat with a 4-2 loss away at Brighton. Defensive frailties were exposed, and despite flashes of quality from Foord, Caldentey and Russo, the Gunners simply weren't good enough. Here's how each player fared at Broadfield Stadium.
Player ratings:
Manuela Zinsberger 4/10
An unrelaxing opening spell today, as Brighton put her under pressure, but Zinsberger did well to claim and clear the ball when she needed to. Brighton’s first half goals came from excellent strikes rather than goalkeeper error, but Zinsberger’s error led to their third.
Katie McCabe 5/10
Arsenal were strong down the left side, and McCabe was often involved, great at driving the ball forwards, and good link ups with Foord. Beaten by Seike for Brighton’s fourth goal. Replaced in second half.
Steph Catley 4.5/10
Quietly went about her business today, with some good moments, but Arsenal’s backline was weak, and she was part of that.
Leah Williamson 4.5/10
Linked up well with Mead, effective in drawing Brighton players out of position when up high. A couple of key blocks in the box. But mistakes and loose passes let her down today as Arsenal conceded again and again.
Emily Fox 5/10
Her pace and work-rate were key today against a fired-up Brighton side. Won most of her foot races, but part of the disappointing backline.
Mariona Caldentey 5.5/10
Played in a deeper role once again, often starting the play out from the back. Brilliantly weighted cross over to Foord for Arsenal’s first goal. Found her way onto the scoresheet in stoppage time with a powerful strike.
Kim Little 5.5/10
Great in tight spaces when under pressure. Her run of good form continued, with a great work-rate in the middle. Replaced in the second half.
Beth Mead 5/10
Key in the build-up to Foord’s goal, passing with Mariona to allow time for players to get into the box. Some sloppy passes, one of which lead to Fran Kirby’s goal. Replaced in second half.
Caitlin Foord 6/10
Fantastic pace on the left wing with some strong balls into the box throughout the game. Arsenal’s most effective player today.
Frida Maanum 4/10
Seemed to enjoy drifting about in the 10 position today, couldn’t finish any of her chances. Replaced in the second half.
Alessia Russo 5.5/10
Some excellent crosses into the box, did well in and out of possession as usual. Another highlight for Arsenal in a team full of lacklustre performances.
