Will Arsenal Ever Win The Premier League Again Under Arsene Wenger?

Answer: No-one knows, but it’s unlikely

Will Arsenal Ever Win The Premier League Again Under Arsene Wenger?

A few weeks ago, I was asked this question and was tasked to put my thoughts down.

I have not been motivated to write because of our poor form. In the words of a gentleman I respect, the Arsenal Team is like a “seemingly devastated side, shorn of confidence and steering wildly towards a rocky shore”. May I add very much helped by a misguided section of the fan base that are very much determined to commit mass suicide by jumping off the cliff edge like lemmings.

Following the draw against Man City, I have found some energy and motivation to write. Prior to Sunday’s match, it was difficult to tell where the next bit of light ahead of the tunnel was coming from. Fortunately we found something and I hope we can build on it. Not that the visitors this evening will be a walkover. There is no ‘gimme’ in the Premier League plus it is a derby. Desire, talent application, work rate & a bit of luck will do it. Should do it for us.

The simple answer to the subject of this article is: NOBODY KNOWS. Anybody who tells you they know one way or the other is unfortunately telling porkies.

At the start of 2015/16 season, at the mid point and after the Leicester loss at the Emirates that season, not one person knew Leicester would win and they did. Until The Spuds’ self-combusted at Stamford Bridge, it was all ‘can they’? Not ‘they will’. How many people had Chelsea down as league champions after the chastening defeat at The Emirates early this season? Less than two months ago, the Manchester Police Twitter account was bantering away at Liverpool FC’s inability to buy a Premier League point. Today they can’t stop vacuuming up three points.

At the start of this season, all the smart money was on one of the Manchester clubs winning the league. See how that is panning out. Both clubs have spent close to a billion pounds over the last two seasons and are capable of paying over £200k per week wages to several players and are both still nowhere near Premier League winning sides.

Predicting if a side will win the league is not easy or straightforward otherwise Bookies will be out of business. Quoting generously from the same source as earlier “Football is a complex blend of tactics, egos, form and confidence”. Winning a football match is not easy let alone a league of 38 football matches. The better team doesn’t always win for different reasons: ill luck; wrong bounce of the ball; funny / dodgy referees, injuries etc.

If you were to ask many if Everton or our poor neighbors in Middlesex can challenge for the title, you are likely to find that people are more willing to give them the benefit of doubt while not willing to cut Arsenal under Arsene any slack at all. Many will rightfully point to the last 13 years without a league championship; the inability to compete throughout the whole season, the Champions League Round of 16 exits, the inability to pay top wages, sign the very best players and potentially many more unconnected reasons like ticket prices, a non visible owner etc. as their reason why Arsenal under Arsene can’t win. They have a point. Up to a point.

What many don’t consider in all of their upset feelings on this touchy subject of Arsene Wenger’s continued stay at The Emirates is the subject of money. The big bucks have simply been the biggest issue here. Until the billions from the Russian owner came in, Chelsea were nobodies. Now they are there or thereabout except when Jose Mourinho does a madness and threatens to bring the whole house down.

Same with Man City. 44 years with big fat zero until the Middle East Oil billions poured in. Money made a difference even in the Ferguson years. United were able to pay bigger wages and bigger transfer fees. When the Glazer debt hobbled United, their ability to compete and dominate was challenged season after season.

At the moment, Arsenal unfortunately can’t spunk money about like any of the bigger boys either for transfer fees or for wages. Yes we have a billionaire owner. His wife and her family did not make their money from selling state assets to themselves nor did they suddenly discover some viscose liquid in their back garden. Even if the Arsenal owner had a money-printing machine in his cellar, it is his decision how to spend his money and any sane and rational person should not quarrel with that.

If Arsenal FC and its owners were to one day, decide to spend money like Chelsea, Man U and Man City are doing, it will take two to three transfer seasons of spending before we can draw level with where these troika are at the moment and there would still be no guarantees of success. If however Arsene and Arsenal can somehow contrive to magic this money and spend like Chelsea and Man City season after season, Arsene and Arsenal will compete from August to May every Premier League season, win at least one league title every three seasons and match the might of the European footballing elite in the Champions League.

For God’s sake, Pellegrini won the league and got to the Semi Final of the Champions League. What is this nonsense about football has passed Arsene by? What tactics did Pellegrini deploy to win his league title? Why can’t Arsene achieve the same with Arsenal with the ‘unlimited’ resources at the disposal of Chelsea or Man City?

A word of caution though. The day a leader of Russia decides he wants to be petty or the day Roman himself gets bored, what is going to happen to the unlimited resources of Chelsea? What happens when oil sells for single figures or a Mad Mullah is threatening the safety of the Middle East and they are on lockdown unable to ship oil for a few months? Will the oil money still gush without a tap? People who think spending money like a drunken sailor is the way to go should beware the ides of Portsmouth and many others.

If Leicester is your retort to the issue of money, my simple response is that Leicester’s win was an exception. They waited for 120 years before their first bite of the cherry. Are we willing to wait that long too? I very much doubt that. Yes they did it and fair play to them. The stars aligned in their favour including dodgy refereeing decisions, Man City’s own flirtation with Pep with its detrimental effect on Pellegrini’s team and Arsenal’s own inability to capitalize on our top of the league position after the New Year Day’s fixtures starting with the disappointing 3 – 3 draw at Anfield.

Leicester were also blessed with the fact that they are a club without a playing philosophy until Nigel Pearson introduced a playing style that was adopted by Claudio Ranieri. Arsenal and Arsene have a playing philosophy and this in itself can be something of an albatross sometimes. It is easy for many who see winning as the only thing that matters to disagree with this playing philosophy issue but please listen to top managers including Pep Guardiola and you will appreciate that philosophy and identity are not like clothes that can be taken off willy-nilly. Alex Ferguson in two Champion League finals versus Barcelona did not change his style of play and lost both finals. As far as Arsene sticks to his playing philosophy and as long as we are unable to attract the top talents coming into the Premier League, it will take the same type of stars aligning as happened for Leicester, for Arsenal under Arsene to win the league.

If Arsene were to abandon his philosophy right now and right here. Put 10 men behind the ball, play dirty and cynical, cheat, create an intimidating atmosphere for referees like Ferguson did, I make bold to say we will challenge for the league like Leicester too and maybe like Ranieri achieved one title win in his 30 year managerial career, Wenger can finally add to his three titles by wining another one for Arsenal within the next four years before he retires.

We re in that stage of the season that we always reach now which is playing teams that are either 'on holiday already' or on the way to nothing much of which WHU are one. Maybe notch up a few wins now and then all we deemed as good to go for next Season. The new signings are even on course i.e The Willy and the Caz. The new contract will be withdrawn from the envelope again soon.

What exactly are a lot of the fans afraid of ? Is it that they can only remember arsene Wenger ? One day he will be gone and we will carry on regardless. I wish this bitterness would end and we could all get behind the team. Last nights win felt good and if the team showed that desire in every game we would be fine. It's just that we all know that isn't going to happen. Wenger sides are known for there weakness in a fight. Watch on Monday night they will be kicked off the park. I am still clinging on to the hope of CL because without it we are well and truly in the poop. I dont trust Wenger anymore but I sure trust kroenke a lot less. He will rip the arse out of that wage bill without the revenues trust me . We need to get behind the team and stop this In fighting .

3 things we learnt from last night Wenger contract for life nailed, Mesut to become best paid player in the universe and Leekie to sign papers so he can live with Wenger forever. Leek - how are the Totteringham plans going for May? What will you be celebrating from your new home?

Old man Leekey is sitting on his balcony bitterly ruminating about the events in his life, with no one else to talk to he tells a little sparrow perched on the window sill. "all day long I helped people, I fixed the bicycles in the village , but did they call me Leek the bicycle fixer? No they did not! Then when the floods washed away the bridge, who fixed it? Yes I did, but did they call me Leek the bridge builder ? No they did not! But once, just once they catch me in that field shagging a Goat. Look what happens! I thought I'd reprise this little joke Squeak as "The Goat" with Damien Lewis is on at the theatre what could be better some high art and a tingle in your belll-end all in one show. Definitely around 10k seats missing, could have gone either way up until the keepers fumble. Interesting to see Wenger piss take songs from the Hammers and zero reaction from the Arsenal. The atmosphere was actually pretty good as well so not like nobody could be bothered to sing. The attitude I got from those around me was it's all best left unsaid. Sort of makes sense for those who want a quiet life and don't want a potential scrap.

Wandered over to have a laugh, sorry, look at how the demo was going last night and lo and behold, there sat four old boys on a wall looking confused. One of them was tearing up his a4 banner. Looked lost souls they did. Bit bizarre, but they were mumbling about a Bruce Springsteen song !?!?!

Wow At least 10,000 empty seats tonight. I didn't think the fans would begin to throw the towel in this early ? What a real shame I guess all the In fighting is having an effect but not in the form of protests. Just people sick of all the crap. west ham looked like a team in big trouble though . We actually got better has the game went on and was unlucky not to get a few more. There are bigger tests coming up please don't be fooled by tonight's result. Hopefully some confidence will be boosted but thank god we played west ham just at the right time ! If you think Wenger has earned a new contract on tonight's game your delusional . A glimmer of hope of CL qualification possibly has been restored but it's still very unlikely. Still think it's Thursday night empty stadium football to come .

RobG, good post, typical wenger apologist, slag off and belittle any manager who is (Maureen etc etc,)and has done better and been more successful, and won more, and in Fergies case a hell of a lot more, he was five times the manager TOF ever was (and we could do worse than teasing him out or retirement for a couple of seasons with the right man under him to come here and put wengers mess right) Mourniho was right when he said it (and the AKB's didn't get much joy when they tried to slag him off and belittle him especially on here for saying it) that their messiah was a Specialist in Failure, they were soon shot down by the proper right thinking true Arsenal fans who knew he was right. We want the specialist in failure out.

Leicester are such an exception that they are more likely to win the PL again in the next half decade than Wenger the non-football accountant. Even Everton are gearing up for the top four next season and will swat Wenger away if the charlatan still stays on for the big pay days because that is all it is for him. If he does stay then maybe he could like Moyes shooed in as they both share a creepy fear of women. They also like to foretell their own failure before it even happens. Arsene Moyes. If the Foxes had got rid of their manager earlier they would be above Wenger now. Tottenham are completely out of sight and playing in a different division now to Wenger. St Totteringhams indeed. It would be an interesting survey to see how many of the Ems fans have ever been to ****eHL. Very few. Ba Ba Blacksheep sounds like a familiar poster and one who perhaps is a good mate of Atwood ..... Uhmmmmm.

I remember years ago on here when there were AKB's giving it large defending their messiah, and then trying to defend him, still full of optimism and convinced one day TOF was going to come good, and they waited and they waited and believed, Every season a new Dawn (remember that one ? lol)this is our year, and still the AKB's waited and waited, the AKB's are long gone now (apart from the odd halfwit) but up pops another one who's still waiting and waiting and believes, to think they still exist, how f*****g sad can you/anyone be. #no new contract, wenger out now.

When the Titanic hit an Iceberg and sank it was down to its captain's incompetence he was to blame for the disaster and not down to bad luck or because it was not constructed properly as some conspiracy theorists claim . The Titanic had a sister ship the Olympus that was built in exactly exactly the same way that the doomed Titanic was and that never sank because the captains of it managed to avoid hitting any icebergs during its numerous voyages. Wenger claims the credit for everything at AFC that goes well but blames others for everything that goes wrong and it is time that the AKB's woke up and smelled the coffee about this because as the actress said to the bishop, you can't have it both ways. If Wenger is responsible for the good things that happen at the club then he must take the blame for the bad ones. In any case everyone knows that he is a control freak so there really can not be any logical argument about that. Bilic is under great pressure tonight himself but worryingly Wengo appeared the other day to be getting the excuses in early when saying that with Keystone Kos out every time a cross inside the goal area was aimed at Andy Carroll it could cause problems. I have no doubt that this may well be so but come on now this is Wengo at his most deluded because Keystone Kos is about as much use as a chocolate tea-pot when it comes to dealing with crosses aimed at big strikers or defenders on set pieces.Something that can also be said of Gabriel and Mustafa. No doubt the under the cosh for a result Croat will be aware of that. After all everyone else is. It's also a fact that this defensive frailty has been a problem for donkeys years with Wengo's sides and is something that he has never addressed . This being just another example of Wengo's managerial incompetence and nothing at all to due with misfortune or by accident.

Dear me what a question. He hasnt been capable of winning a title for years I thought that was all too evident. Reading these kind of articles make me wonder if the writers understand football at all. The obsession with Wenger is worrying. He is neither a great football manager nor a great mind. He is just a bloke with a french accent who won something important over a decade ago. This 'he revolutionised football in this country' is a gross over exaggeration. We need to move on urgently.

This article stinks of 'Goebbels' Attwood. I'm amazed that it got through the editor here. Not because I don't respect an alternative opinion, but because it make absolutely no point or no sense. Not one argument for persisting with the specialist in failure. Comparing AFC with Leicester, complaining about 'financial doping', ill luck; wrong bounce of the ball; funny / dodgy referees, injuries etc...his full repertoire is here. But worst of all, he may as well have asked 'Is there a heaven', or 'will I ever win the lottery'. Highly unlikely but the answer cannot be definitive. Attwood himself writes about this for his media marketing business consultancy. I wonder if the Furher employs his consultancy services. At least old Goebbels cannot delete the posts exposing him here though

I am no fan of Ferguson at all. But mocking him for losing two CL finals to Barca does not sit well with the reality of him having also won two. Wenger has won.....how many UEFA competitions....?......go on....how many......The answer is none in 30 plus years.

Baba Grumpy - your words betray you, you obviously go hiding when Arsenal lose. You see the 2-2 as a victory so have some renewed belief in the Specialist in failure. If we are Lemmings you are a little frightened mouse squeak , squeak. 13 years no title , 1 year contract = 14 years no title , 2 year contract = 15 years no title. You can follow the numerical pattern quite easily. Wengo is an embarrassment , a loser , a greedy bastard and a control freak. Sooner he goes the better.

ASL are taking no titles under AW. Its been clear for yrs but only to those not to reluctant to see what he and the Club have become.I cant agree with any of this article as its all been said before on AKB street, in fact it reads like the AKB hymn that we oft hear whirring out of AKB Central Command, conducted gustily by the Rt Reverend Badarse, though the few left in there now rattle about like skeletal freaks, but still walking around in circles, clad in sandals or bare footed, hoods pulled low over their faces, beards worn long and chanting quietly their time worn homages to their deity im sure. but it was interesting to read nonetheless. I reached the word 'philosophy'. There i stopped. There was no point giving it further time.

Chelsea? Er, in case you've had your head in the sand (which seems likely given the lack of any evidence based reasoning in this article) you will be aware that we have a higher net spend than the side likely to win a second title in three years over the last half decade. Not over the last year, or two years, over the last five years! Blah, blah, blah, wages you might cry. Sorry, facts are that we are as close as makes little difference there too (within 10% of their total wage bill over that period). And this is a side that sacked a title winning manager months into the next season. Spin and waffle I'm afraid, nobody 'knows' that the sun will rise tomorrow, but if you look back just a few weeks you'll also recall that the BBC noted that the bookies rated the chances higher of Alien life being discovered in 2017 than of AFC winning the Champions League. Next time try and give us some actual sound reasoning rather then myths and fantasies to support Wenger.

To be honest I find your comment about lemmings insulting. Just because a lot of people can't see Wenger changing or being capable of making the correct decisions anymore doesn't mean we all have to be following each other. The proof is there for all to see if nothing changes it's just going to get worse. No CL money will not help the situation. Your talking like a miracle is around the corner. Sorry it's sad I know but it isn't going to happen. A change of manager will mean hopefully a change of style and personnel. Then we do have a chance for a lot of the obvious reasons you stated. Good luck

  33. jeff wright

    Apr 05, 2017, 12:32 #100269

No is the answer to the question and it's not rocket science to work out why. I see that Wengo is being ,shall we say liberal with the truth again, when desperately like a drowning rat trying to stay afloat in a cess pit of acrimonious protest grasping at Pep's 4th place is a trophy comments last week to justify his mediocre record for the past 20 years of mainly mediocre failure in the league. Actually what the wily Spaniard said was that it is NOW tougher to finish in the top 4 than it was in the past.So it's easy to see why Wengo is struggling to do it this season . Big Ibra summed up this top 4 finish malarkey perfectly after last night's draw at Old Trafford when saying that anything other than finishing first is a failure. Wengo though for years talked himself up and still does regarding his top 4 minor place finishes as being a against all odds heroic success when in reality there were only 3 sides and he managed one of them who were guaranteed to finish in the top 4 . So it was not really such a big deal at all Wengo's top 4 trophy was a bit of a Mickey Mouse one really for Wenger with him managing one of the three sides that were always favs to finish at least 4th .This created a comfort zone mentality for Wenger and the players. Now as Pep pointed out the situation is different with at least 6 sides competing for 4 places and the league as a whole is also , due to other smaller clubs now having more money these days and so being able to buy better players . This is making life for the top teams harder. Wenger never saw this coming and has carried on regardless with his increasingly outdated policies that worked for him regarding consistently winning his 4th place trophy and the Champions League TV money but these dinosauric policies of Wengo's are now proving to be a mill stone around the club's neck dragging it down into mid-table mediocrity . Wenger winning another league title come on now you are having a laugh surely .It's 2004 since he last won one and he has never even managed to put in a challenge for a league title since ! Wengo's comments on the ones made by the snake oil salesman to disgruntled supporters at the weekend regarding alleged big changes taking place in the summer confirm my views that this was really all about buying time for Syrupy's gang while they suck it and see how things transpire . Wengo doesn't see any need for changes because he does not believe that he has made any mistakes and that nothing he does is wrong. In fact Wengo actually said so ! You couldn't make it up. Wengo says that he thinks that he can win his 4th place trophy again and that would of course be job done for Syrupy and Wenger 's position secured for awhile longer . Then of course there is still that old face saver the trophy that in another life time was not worth the bother for him The FA Cup with the semi final v City ominously lurking to help divert attention ,like the rock of Gibraltar does for Spanish politicians, away from other matters more important to the people . So it looks like only bad results in the league and FA Cup is going to force Syrupy to tell Wengo it's time to go buddy because the rat-faced fraudster is never going to do so unless he is forced to do it.
