A Summer of Reckoning

Change is vital on more than one front

A Summer of Reckoning

Club need to dispense with this pair to move forward

So, there you have it. The sleeping giant slips from its ‘throne’ to a place below. Yes, that means Arsenal finished fifth. Our club, our manager and the team we support has failed us once again. The only thing you can guarantee at Arsenal is that we’ll falter, splutter and collapse season after season. I am thankful this season is over and I am hoping we somehow come out of the FA Cup final with some dignity, if not a win. However, what I am more interested in is this forthcoming summer, a summer of reckoning if you will.

This is the time where our club must look at its failure, observe Wenger’s failings and offer answers. We as a fanbase deserve answers and more importantly, we deserve retribution. No longer can the untouchable be left unscathed. Arsene Wenger has to be held accountable. Many will read this, roll their eyes and think ‘The season is over, leave the man alone’. I say, why should I, and the rest who raise their fists in anger stop sharing our fury? Our season was over far before the final day and that’s the cold, hard truth. It is time for the manager to be sacrificed in order for rebirth, just like the fans sacrifice their time, money and emotion. If Wenger doesn’t do it willingly, the board has to do it for him. Although I have no confidence that our board will do the right thing because when you look at our situation from every angle, they’re just as culpable. They’re enablers and they’ve allowed this to continue for far too long. For all the protesting, the vitriol and evidence shown in our results that Wenger’s time is up, it may surmount to nothing.

If they do not bring upon judgement then they are as cowardly as they are perceived. It will confirm that our club is weak and more importantly, rotten to the core. Will Gazidis continue to be a laughable puppet who is more akin to a snake than a lion or shall he break the chains our glorious, most loved manager placed on him? Is the board going to support Gazidis? Are they going to run and hide like cockroaches because there is too much heat, too much danger. The very notion that there are ‘options’ of how our board will act in this situation says it all. There should be no option at all, the manager should go and that is that. How can the board allow a man to disrespect the fans (the lifeblood) and the club (the business) with farcical comments and pathetic displays of behaviour. Even in his last press conference of the season, Wenger showed who he really is, a megalomaniac whose blameless yet fearful that his reign is coming to an end. He acts as a martyr, ‘I have stayed here out of love / I have rejected numerous offers / I take all the blame / I will love this club until my dying breath’. At least his form of martyrdom is profitable though, right? His love, rejection and blame has earned him a wealth many would die for, it has earned him a platform many would dream of and he has been adored globally for so long. Of course he has faced hardship during his career at Arsenal and money doesn’t heal the scars of the ‘suffering’ he mentions when we lose or should I say, when we’re battered. Nor does it drown out the abuse of our fans. However, I am sure it softens the blow and his behaviour alongside his arrogance more than warrants a fiery backlash - he has escaped being burned for far too long, it’s about time he sees the flames, feels the heat and tastes the bitter smoke.

While it’s clear Wenger is the problem, the Arsenal fanbase identify that Stan Kroenke is also leeching life from our beautiful club. Kroenke is a parasite: a greedy, damaging and empty businessman. He cares only for profit, not about real success - trophies and glory. His glory is materialistic, it’s about maintaining his facade of being rich and powerful. He does not care about the club, he does not care whether Bayern smashes us bloody and certainly is far too high in his castle to hear the working-class fans scream and cry for his head, for a better club. The man is a wolf in a disgusting man-suit and his money-making ways, is all he’s concerned with. As soon as Arsenal becomes unprofitable or loses him too much money, he will jump ship. Make no mistake, Stan Kroenke is a form of football evil, he is the dark side of capitalism and an example of how it’s corrupted the wonderful game. It appears, once again, we rely on another force to usurp, this time it’s Usamanov. As exciting as it sounds to have a fountain of money, a conveyor belt of world class players and the potential to have more trophies than our contenders, we have to realise, it’s a dream and nothing more. Let’s be realistic, Usamanov will not take control of Arsenal. It is highly unlikely Kroenke will sell to him and if he does, he’ll make sure it’s a fight and a half, with plenty of money involved. It’s a shame because Usamanov cares about the club, he wants to win and he acknowledges that our performance over the years has been second-best, or should I say fourth-best. Of course there are concerns about his history and background but honestly, the world of business can be vile, shady and deceitful just like life itself. It is after all upheld by humans, the worst of them all!

Besides the manager conundrum, our board’s missing backbone and big-money being thrown across the pond, this summer is also important in terms of player recruitment. Who we bring in and lose will be crucial in regards to what sort of team we’ll be come August. If Sanchez goes, he has to be replaced with a player of his calibre, the same goes for Ozil. If neither of them go, then players of their calibre must be brought in regardless. We need to weed out the average and replace them with winners. No longer can we have players who are content to be bottom feeders, taking the money they demand while putting in patchy, often lacklustre performances. To compete with the big boys, to no longer be an underdog, we have to stop acting like one. Arsenal must show ambition and risk, we HAVE to be ruthless and shameless in the transfer market this year. It’s important to pay the money for the right player but also stop playing the ‘nice guy’. If we want someone, we get them; trampling whatever club(s) is (are) after said player. Arsenal are an exciting, potentially rewarding prospect for a world class player and it’s time we start acting like it. Our club must put the things in place to make it happen.

These upcoming months are vitally important to righting the wrongs of this year. If they’re not corrected, we’re in serious trouble and it won’t just be the fight for fourth and Thursday night football we’ll be worrying about next year. It is time for Arsenal FC to transform, shedding its skin along with its submissive mentality. The club must rise up, taking on our competitors and finally show grit and hunger. We, the fans must support the club through this process and help restore it to its former glory. Make no mistake, we are as much Arsenal FC as the staff, players etc, we are its heart - its core. If the board fails us this summer, if Arsene stays and Kroenke remains, we fight back and revolt. A reckoning is coming and either way, the fans will be triumphant and when that triumph comes, may it be with glory.

SKG, good post, sad isn't it, more proof how clubs have moved on to bigger and better things over the years while we've regressed and got worse under wenger, even more proof not that any is needed why he should have been got rid off years ago instead of allowed to stay and given chances and stink the place out and set us back a decade. @no new contract.

You are right Ron - messed my night's sleep up watching that game again. What struck me when Edu came on in that final was how he immediately got to the pace of the game and set up Freddie for the second. How Wenger could pick Edu as a player and then 5 years later think Denilson could do that job is beyond me - Man v boy!

SKG - Its bad for yr health watching those old re runs isnt it. Saw a bit of Arse v Chels 2008/09 earlier. It was just after Utd had walked through us in the CL. We looked like total midgets back then up v Terry Drobs Alex and Mikel and Co. Even the present team looks like giants by comparison.

The Ropey Cup lived up to its nom de plume last with a dull as dishwater yawn inducing final. For Mourinho though it was job done 2 and a half trophies won ,only Wengo counts the charity shield as being a proper one, plus the main objective won of a Champions League place. Admittedly there are not many champions playing in it but there is lots of money to be made and that is the most important thing forc lubs these days. So job done for Jose but the same can't be said for Wengo - whatever the result is on Saturday. He's just a loser big-time.

I Watch the BBC red button last night, it showed the 2002 Cup final. Parlour's tackling really was something else, Edu was sub!! Great watching Freddie leave a young J Terry in his wake for the second. Very even game but our defence got us through - Campbell and Adams looked like giants - we were just bigger than Chelsea. Watching Paddy run out of the six yard box with the ball, half a dozen strides and he's on the halfway line. Impossible to believe that the team appearing at Wembley on Saturday is managed by the same person who managed the triumphant 2002 side - impossible.

Firstly, all my thoughts to the people of Manchester and anyone affected. I want to get back to footy as it keeps me sane. My mate is out there now and is likely just finished bouncing in the stadium. Well done Man U. Of the six most likely clubs, we are the one to fall short next year in the 'elite' competition. That must raise an eyebrow, even a false one, surely! AW's change came to little to late. He went to the well for the final time and there was no water. The sale of Sanchez will cover some money for the 'bald one'. We are living in the world of Charles Dickens here,' please sir can I have some more....' Meanwhile back at the Arsenal history museum, " yes, here we have a 'syrup of figs' , makes you regular. It's in fact a hairpiece and it has kindly been donated by a past benefactor to the club. We prefer to call it a 'charlie'. He took a cut of course, so it remains lopsided, do come again. "

Good article. Do you know what depresses me most about AFC the most? It's the sheer MEDIOCRITY of the whole business - we have a manager who was smart, innovative & successful who has morphed into the depressing person we see today. As for Stanley & the rest? Can you have any respect or admiration for any of them? Wiggy by all accounts is a "no mates", untalented, charmless character who successfully leached off his wife's family business, the CEO has sold his soul & as for the rest? A bunch of no marks. You would not want to have a pint with any of them. Like him or not, & I detest how he made his money, you have to say that Roman A is 100% involved with Chelski. Wouldn't it be great if AFC, miraculously became the first major UK club to be solely owned by its fans?

Exeter the United situation that Kroenke may fear is regarding the next manager not doing any better than Wenger is doing but will cost Stan far more money by trying to do so .United have had 3 since Sir Ferguson left and have not finished in the top 4 under any of them. Mourinho is relying on winning the Ropey tonight to get into the Champs League albeit he recently slated Ajax for doing so by getting in through the back doo. Mourinho is demanding more big money signings during the summer . As I said I doubt that Syrupy wants a manager with real ambition anyway because it will cost him money . Wenger will carry on doing things on the cheap and sell players to help balance the books. That suits old Syrupy back on the ranch just fine. All of his clubs meander along in mediocrity and in Wenger he has an expert in operating that way.

Hi Berry, you beat me to it, so Sanchez is hard to manage, yes maybe it's because he's ambitious and want's to win things, and fed up pulling his weight and giving his all when others aren't, don't and never do, and fed up playing with second and third raters, and being managed by an old past it manager who listens to nobody and hasn't a f*****g clue. wenger out.

What is the 'Man Utd scenario' we should be afraid of? No longer competing for the title? Dropping out of the top 4? Well, the fear of the AKBs of what could happen after Wenger, has happened with him still in charge. So why are they still supporting him? The answer is because their 'fear' was fake. They prove it once again - all they are interested in is him remaining in charge.

  16. Hi Berry

    May 24, 2017, 15:15 #101588

So, Sanchez is hard to manage is he?....maybe it's because instead of doing the bare minimum like most of the others he turns up for training when he needn't and insists on joining in. Only the culture at Arsenal would criticise a player for wanting to do more!

jw TOF s telling Stan what he likes to hear alright, ref a couple of players although I've no doubt if he'd said/mentioned a closer to the mark truer amount like four or five that wouldn't have been a problem either regardless what the AKB wengerites try and tell us. But lets not forget as well that only a couple of new signing spout from the weasel although deluded yes, is him taking the opportunity (again) to stick two fingers up at the fans to remind us an let us know he'll still be doing it his way, he's still the boss, and won't be listening to us, what an arrogant c**t, even now after everything he's caused done and brought about. Seven Kings Gooner1,the way the spin machine operates at AFC is so predictable .Keown is the organ grinder's monkey and would never say anything unless his master had okayed it.I reckon it's all about balancing the books for Syrupy now and sorting out Wengo's rules of engagement for the next ( yawn) new contract that he signs. The FA Cup is just a side show to the main events taking place off the field of play.

JW : Bang on about Keown and how disruptive Sanchez is in training. That will no doubt be the exclusive over the summer and how Sancho lost them their place in Europe. Thing is Jeff, the fans will believe it, my neighbour swears Sanchez is a problem! I suppose Arsene's little "go between" is having to pay his boss back for letting him on the pitch for a couple of minutes to claim his PL medal. If I had been his manager I would have kept him off and then reminded him how his own goal in a 2-2 draw at Bolton cost us the title.

Too true Ron it's a fact that Wenger sells players to other so called rivals Cashley to the chavs and Robbing Van Pursey to United being two examples of that. Both those players helped their new clubs to win trophies that the players themselves would never have got a sniff of with old clueless. Keown old clueless's media stooge coming out slagging off Sancho the other day and blaming him for Wenger's failures this season with his glum sulking must surely be a pointer to which way the wind is blowing regarding the Chileans future -or lack of any at AFC.

Kronke has shown Wenger the futility of trophies compared to hard cash - and our Frenchman has gobbled up the philosophy lock stock and balance sheet. Many on this site have said that Arsenal are now the future model for most Premier League clubs to follow and they certainly have a gullible enough fan base to maximize their bludgeoning resources.

Very good piece, Robert. The decisions made at Arsenal this summer are crucial. I think many fans, especially the older ones like me, are on the cusp of turning their backs on Arsenal completely. We are treading water at the moment, waiting to see which way things are going to go after the cup final, and if the status quo is maintained then I for one can not envisage taking any interest whatsoever in next season's shambles.

Good summary Jeff. 'Plodding Per' ha ha. Good one. I think the sale of the Wally and the Willy may well be the factors to offset the loss of the CL. Youre right though, They ll sell Sanchez to anybody for the right price, Spurs even! They really would in my view these days. I can see the sense in dumping him for silly money though at his age. I don't believe that the FA Cup result will have any bearing on whether Wenger goes or stays . If the odious creepy Syrupy is going to fire Wenger than the failure by Wenger to win the top big bucks earner top 4 trophy is the straw that is more likely to make him do it. However, in the short term Syrupy can make good the shortfall in profits in various ways such as by asset stripping. That being one of his favorite ways of doing so. Along with borrowing money by robbing Peter to pay Paul so to speak. Already rumors are being circulated in the media about the glum Chilean Sancho's agent arriving to help broker a move for his client and a big money one by him is one of the ways in which the missing millions that Wenger's failure to secure the Champions League cash can be recouped. Ozil is the big headache for Stan because no one wants to the buy the oaf other than Fernabache who have made their interest in doing so public . Glummer would have to take a big hike in his wages though and there is more chance of pigs flying than there is of that happening. So some sort of compromise on wages will have to be cobbled together and this will see Ozil remain until he eventually leaves on a free - or for some modest amount of cash in the future. As the article says Stan is only interested in the money side of things at AFC so we have to take this into accountant when looking at what his decisions are likely to be regarding the future. I'm guessing that he wants Wenger to stay and the issue here is what powers the megalomaniac egotistical Frenchman is prepared to concede to do so .He obviously doesn't want to give up any of his control at AFC and Syrupy might well buy that rather than take a chance on a Manchester United scenario developing and we all know how much attention Stan pays to what goes on at that cesspit of commercialism. Wenger himself though will be taking a big chance on remaining at AFC his top 4 trophy failure is a game changer with him no longer having the group stage Champions League qualification to use for a crutch to lean on. Wengo's claims that only a couple of new signings are required in the summer and that the current players ( probably minus Sancho) will be good enough to win the league next term show yet again just how deluded he really is. But hey this is what Syrupy wants to hear - he doesn't want some Mourinho type big spender coming in demanding buckets ful of dosh to help him try ad win the top trophies - no sirree Stan just wants thing to meander along in profitable mediocrity. This latest optimism about winning the league with his current squad that we have heard from monsieur Wenger after every season of abject failure for donkeys years is based this time on the recent run of 5 wins in the league in dead rubber games against opponents with nothing to play for . And when yet again the pressure was off him and his comfy zone players to win the league. Wenger ended up needing West Ham and then Boro to do him favors .You don't win league titles or even mythical top 4 trophies by relying on other teams to do you favors. It was this same excuse that other teams had failed to beat Leicester that Wenger used to justify his own failure to beat them to the title in the previous season. So he has obviously not learned anything from his past mistakes and failures .Then again he never does - does he >? A trouncing off Chelsea on Saturday - if as is most likely happens - will be yet another realty check regarding Wenger's claims that he has the squad already in place to win the league next season. Hey ,I can't wait to see Plodding Per leading the side out -how exciting that will be ! Hazard and co will be trembling in their with boots fear .You couldn't make it up.

EG - all true. In short Usmanov wants to be Roman Abramovitch and seen in the same light so as to prop up his cred and others perceptions of him. RA was once the devils Son wasnt he, now hes morphed into the Patron Saint of human kindness to SW London in the eyes of them who care about Chelsea.

Kroenke and Usmanov are morally no better than each other, but the difference is Usmanov would demand sporting achievement to prop up his ego, whilst Kroenke might as well own a building, he's just looking at his asset appreciating. Wenger is to blame for all on pitch failure though. Kroenke hasn't stopped him spending the money the club generates. The main problem with Kroenke is he has no sporting ambition, doesn't demand high standards of the club and hasn't sacked Wenger. If Wenger gets another contract it'll be confirmed there's zero sporting ambition at that club once and for all.

Glad to see a post that ranks equally the culpability of both the Board and AW. Its not and never has been just Wengers failings that have lead to the decline in my view too. The bit about Usmanov 'caring'more than them though is quaint. He doesnt. Hes one of them but just wants in on it and hes irked that he isnt. As you say, hes probably no more dirty than SK but hes cut from the same cloth. Theyve more in common with each other than what divides them. Most of the Club ownership in that PL is a rotten as a pear. The Board are dropping the prices. That ll quell the uprise for most of the punters. AW and SK can sleep easily. Theyre home and dry. We ll win the Cup and all of the hostility will drain away as quickly as p--s down a urinal.
