Online Ed: Unconvincing Arsenal defeat West Ham

A Win’s A Win, But My God…

Wow. This was an eye opener, and indisputable evidence of how much work Unai Emery has ahead of him. Mesut Ozil was ill, once again, which just goes to show you that vast wealth is no guarantee of a functioning immune system… either that or he was told he was being dropped yesterday and did not want to face the ignominy of starting the game on the bench. You decide. With around £50 million in wages going out to the new number 10 until the summer of 2021, it’s going to be very interesting to see how this one pans out.

So the four that started were Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan, Iwobi and the returning Aaron Ramsey. Rather surprisingly, Xhaka was retained to partner Matteo Guendouzi, with Torreira in his customary position on the bench. Reputedly, his struggles with the English language are a factor in his not starting matches. In defence, the same quartet that began against Chelsea, with Petr Cech in goal behind them. For those looking to make something from UK betting sites who checked the pre-game odds on the likes of www.topratedbettingsites.co.uk, there would have been no doubt that the home side were regarded as having a strong enough eleven to defeat a pointless West Ham.

Yet, things did not go smoothly, and West Ham were the side that took the lead through Arnautovic. Arsenal equalized through Monreal before the interval, and after a number of scares in the second half, managed to score two more, courtesy of an own goal and substitute Danny Welbeck hitting an injury time third.

But it cannot be ignored that Arsenal presented the visitors with a hatful of opportunities due to poor defending, and too often lacked fluidity in possession. In spite of the three points, it was a very disappointing display by Emery’s team. The tactics are built on the twin principles of fast passing to get the ball forward with players under the onus to find space to receive the ball, combined with effective pressing to win possession back or at least prevent the danger of counter attacks. There was very little of any of that yesterday.

Sure there are mitigating circumstances. Arsene Wenger’s players need to get used to new methods, and the incoming players need to get used to the Premier League and their team-mates. But hopes that Arsenal might look defensively better against a weaker opponent than Manchester City and Chelsea were dashed. Although some of the players did some good stuff when Arsenal were moving forward, few can say the same when West Ham had the ball. Too often, it was a case of gung ho Gunners, something we saw too often in the latter Wenger years. Arsenal remain great viewing for the neutral. There were creative plus points, with the midfield players demonstrating better ability on the ball at times, notably Xhaka and Torreira once he came on for Guendouzi.

The difference between the two sides was simply that Arsenal put more of their chances away. But it could easily have gone the other way. And West Ham are in all likelihood going to be relegation candidates. The fear is that if Arsenal play as poorly as this again, they will be well and truly put to bed by a better side.

There is not much more to say. The players are surely not doing everything that their head coach wants. There was a sense of lethargy way too often, a lack of focus and discipline. Once again, the ball was given away in the team’s own half more often than is good for comfort. I am genuinely baffled as to how Emery is going to improve his side’s performance level, because this was not good enough, in spite of the final result. It was a case of Arsenal getting away with it. We’ll take the much needed three points, a win’s a win after all, but this really is going to take a long time. Based on the opening matches, a return to the top four may have to wait for another season.

@ Marky - After 5 years of hearing the same thing from mbg’s every post I was hoping for some positivity after Wenger left and the new guy came in. We’re all well aware of mbg’s anti-Wenger sentiment, which by the end was shared to some degree by virtually every poster on here, yet most have decided to focus on the future rather than dragging it back to Wenger at every opportunity. His hatred for Wenger outweighs his love for Arsenal (well certainly the thrust of his posts gives that impresssion) which is a shame in this new era we’ve entered.

markymark, well said, yes the point I keep bringing up over and over which always (conveniently) falls on deaf ears, can you imagine if TOF had left a hero on his own terms, retired (and not sacked) after truly been the greatest manager (and not just in his and others mind)winning another prem, EC, or FA cup, even scraped that last ropey second rate ec that he couldn't even manage they'd still be signing his praises about that and letting us know about it at/on every occasion they'd have never let anyone forget him or what he achieved, just like the way they used to do with his first ten years rein (even though it was mostly down to others)to defend him, and some even still do, now because he's was eventually found out, and they can actually see and know why themselves they don't want to know, they don't even want him mentioned, instead forgot about, even though the trouble and mess we're in now was and is because of the old weasel, on how disappointed they must be in their beloved grandfather to want him dismissed from the family.

Gooner Ron - so it’s ok to mention Wenger when discussing his achievements but not if you mention his numerous failings. You were very late to the party fella . Some blindness held you back. Now in your world nothing can be held against him. How very convenient for you. Virtually every ex’s pro are suggesting it will be numerous transfer windows to sort out the changes ( by implication that means mess ) You’ll going to have to put up with the anti Wenger rhetoric for some time yet. I’d concentrate on supporting Unai which is more than your whacko fan club have been able to do.

GoonerRon plus a PL 49 match unbeaten record, and he has one record which shall never be surpassed. Arsene Wenger will remain through perpetuity as the only PL manager who has secured a League and FA Cup Double in two millennia.

@ mbg - unless you write one yourself I think you’ll find the history books will show 3 league titles, an unbeaten league season, two doubles and a record 7 FA Cups.

'Into the breeches!' he muttered as he pulled on the orange ankle-swingers. He struck up a Shakespearian pose, he then struck up a Swan Vesta, then he struck up an imaginary conversation with no one, 'Weasel!' he cried treading on an open egg sandwich he'd dropped the day before. He looked for his toe rag to wipe off the egg between his toes. 'Aah, there you are Nark.', he named all his kitchen items with familiar handles. The handle of his mop was called 'Handle' as it had become a little confusing. 'Old fraud!', he yelled but not at the top of his voice, it was probably somewhere near the middle of his range. It was akin to a case of tourettes with the poor lad. He was ready for the world now, but his world was almost a Virtual Reality one. He saw flowers everywhere but they were all pansies, there were crosses galore, a distant relative of Pussy Galore, and his shirt front was always wet with bile and frothing. He marched out of the house with the song, 'Welcome to my World', on his lips, he knew it was a fit and healthy song as it had something to do with Gym Reeves. Trouble was the tune didn't quite fit the pipes and drums beat which played incessantly in his head. 'Dettol!' he screamed. It would be a long day for the community. Good old Arsenal.

I have,nt posted for a while this site has become so boring with the constant bickering amongst the regular posters we all know wenger stayed on for too many years I personally was over the moon when they finally sacked him, but that is now past tense, let,s get behind unai cos boy he,s gonna need all the support he can get, let,s stop all this name calling amongst the posters on here, you all know who you are, the club is in a dodgy position with the septic tank (yank) taking over, the club we grew up following no longer exists but lets get behind what,s left of it, from a former clock end stalwart c.o.y.g

And hopefully because of fans like me, and others, who keep reminding everyone what TOF was really like over and over again, it will never be forgotten, right down the line to 2049 and those in turn do the same and make sure it goes even further, but of course we have history books and those still to be written about the old weasel the ones that will tell the truth anyway, and you can't rewrite history, it will still be here in 2049, although i'm quite sure all trace of the weasel will be long forgotten about by then or even before, but i'll bet they'll still be talking about Herbert Chapman and George Graham.

Excellent work Badarse. (MBG) most boring gooner is stuck in the Arsene world but God help him, nobody on his given planet seems to be obliged to help. Thick, stupid, helpless fool. Meanwhile, gooner Ron..... Just forget his insipid, meandering posts. It's the Guinness that erupts the few braincells last left. ARSENE HAS LEFT THE CLUB BELL END. He's gone. It's Unai's turn. @ mbg - well I’ll look forward to May 2049 when the last Under-7 player signed by Arsenal during Wenger’s reign retires from the club at 38 years old - then all trace will be gone and you might start saying something original.

I buy Private Eye sometimes - usually a decision based on whether the front cover makes me laugh. Interesting feature in the latest edition on Wiggy's share dealings etc. Confirms our worst fears as to Stanley's mastery of the financial Dark Arts. Why don't the so-called heavyweight financial papers provide such insights? Also, I don't know how many bothered to watch Chelski but I have to grudgingly admit that bloody Hazard really did put in a shift & was subjected to a real hammering throughout from the Barcode defenders - but he kept getting up & gave 'em hell. Wish our marquee signing had such character but then he can't help going down with the sniffles or the trots every other week can he?

personally I think it may be Ambien that Baddie’s been ingesting. Tiger Woods, Roseanne Barr , Elon Musk , Charlie Sheen. All have blamed their crazed tweeting and posting on the Devil’s Aspirin. Roseanne I believe randomly called out people for being Nazis! Ring any bells Baddie? The loss of Westie ( Surely mouldering in a pine box ) was a severe blow to him , Yes it’s Ron, has also gone temporarily ? meaning he’s limited on who he can blow smoke up a passage. Combined with this is a constant diet of daytime TV consisting of funeral plans , Will’s and Home Equity release adverts and woeful Place in the Sun. We can see what has led him to his current state. A plea to Mrs Badarse. Leave him in a corner if you must, but please direct his browser to a harmless gardening site . Give him a month though and he’ll be trying to sow seeds of division once again.

'...he left behind, us in, still is...', and I throw my wait behind that one, two, three O'Leary. He was coming apart at the seams it seems. He stood up for himself, even when he sat down so, a needle pulling Fred. Knowing he kneeded knees he recognised that his problem had always been with low down joints. Then putting his balaclava on backwards he understood that some saw with their eyes, whilst others saw through them. Good old Arsenal. With that he galloped away on an old hag that westlower loaned him, or perhaps it was the Loan Ranger.

MAF well put as they have all been indoctrinated over many years by a Scientologist type with an abacus. It ran right through to the AKB support who are still in a trance they may never come out of. Apparently Ozil has a catarrh problem and he does look ill and with all the scarf wearing he is the epitome of the Wenger player. Genius footballer yet fragile and misunderstood. Like you say Unai has his work cut out but if Wenger can have over two decades to try and crash the club I reckon Unai could do with three years before we can think of CL competing again. News from the 9th tier is that we could not play against Peacehaven this morning cause we cannot raise a team! Never experienced this supporting a club and the novelty is fun! Time for another cup of chicory. Bank holidays hey! Philip Larkin & the plight of the Goldfish. Strong stuff this! Due to the fact that his wife has suffered living with a constant pain in the arse and neck for many, many years she’s probably on something stronger. Maybe carfentanyl.

Moved to Spain 2 year's ago and back in the UK for a short time. Regular reader of the Online Gooner and my trusty Android Box enables me to watch every game. Interesting to read all these opinions. And let's not forget. That's all they are. Opinions. Sad to say but Arsenal are at best a top six side now and I don't envisage any change any time soon. The move from Highbury has been a disaster on Football terms. The Club will argue that financially it's been a major success but it's just not delivered on a Football front. We were told the move would enable us to compete at the very top. This just hasn't happened. The club were happy to let Wenger just get on with it as long as he delivered Champions league and the money rolled in. For me he should have gone 8 years ago. Now the new coach has a mountain to climb. I just hope he's given sufficient time. This isn't going to happen overnight. Ozil and Ramsey should be sold. They will never buy into the new idea's. The owner will not be bank rolling a new squad. So it's going to be a struggle to get back into the top four. As for a title challenge. Just isn't going to happen. I'd love to be proved wrong.??

He knew he had to get the squad sorted and had to stand on his own two feet. It was easy standing his right foot on his left, but in trying to then put his left on his right he fell over. This damned team selection was difficult. He stood up and brushed himself down, then he stood down and brushed himself up, he preferred this. Standing alone in the corridors of power he smelt disinfectant. He spotted an odd chap trying his best to mop the floor and whistle at the same time. He shook his head. 'And I thought team selection was difficult'. It was time to return to the drawing board so he did and drew a cat named Pat having a chat with a rat and a bat in a hat on the mat. His head hurt so he went to lie down. He saw the odd chap again, who was arguing with someone who wasn't there and muttering, 'Is dat Ibcol Ashley's brother or what?'

He was looking for a road to Damascus moment but had lost his A-Z. He knew that Saul had become Paul, who met John, who met George, who met Bongo, or was it Ringo? No that was Bilbo, or perhaps Frodo. Anyway being alert, and he'd never wanted to be a lert, he accepted what was, as is. He'd seen the new Pooh film and realised just being is the answer, but what was the question? Still waters run deep and he'd wished Michael Flatley had danced there. He'd danced with the devil, here, there and everywhere, which brings us back to the mop tops, even so Ajax and Vim does the job with or without a mop top, but is a mop top the stick or the raggedy end? It has to be the stick which it should be adhered to.

Good result Saturday thou a poor performance at the back and in the middle of the park. Centre backs being hung out to dry with little help from those around them. Bellerin seems to of given up any idea about his defensive duties and the emphasis seems to be on attacking and not defending. It's a mystery to me why he sticks with Cech, who should of done better with their goal.At least we had 11 players on the pitch this time.It is going to get worse before it gets better and we are mirroring what happened to the bin dippers under Gilette and Wilkes. Lets hope it does not take as long to dine at the top table again. For a London derby i was a little surprised at the number of empty seats in the ground, not so much the one's at club level but the one's in the upper tier.I suppose that is what happens when you become a tourist attraction instead of a football club.Under sole investor Kroenke we are doomed. The only surprise for me is why he let Chambers go out on loan when he may of been a better option at the back ,certainly has more pace than the two in now! Good to see Welbeck score even if only from 6 yards he may prove to be a better option on the wing than Ozil and Mikki , with Lacazette and Auby would certainly help the full backs more .. Its going to take longer than we hoped, just hope he can shift some players over the next couple of windows and gets some help from the board ! Daft when you compare the money some of the so called smaller clubs have spent this transfer window!!!

I note the times of the posts and exchanges. mbg still upset that GoonerRon has his turn on the top bunk posts his usual drivel. "Messi-ah, disciples, luvvies, pansies, weasel, old fraud." GR's phone lights up. He responds, "Let it go mbg." mbg is confused as he isn't holding onto the Paisley-patterned duvet. He reacts in the only way he knows. "Disinfect the place, because of the smell of the Wenger luvvies and Welsh susej." GR sends another post in to confuse our cross-bearing hero. "Is it Dettol or Ibcol that's required?" mbg looks up his almanack of, 'Dem forin players'. He muses on whether Dettol or Ibcol could improve the side; are either wingers? Lost in confusion, he blows on his flute, bangs his drumstick on the wall then breaks wind. Nothing happens to his flute as it lays dormant, his drumstick gets abuse as KFC are not Kilmarnock Football Club, but at least breaking wind released his angst. He nods off with a smile on his face knowing he can sleep on the top bunk tomorrow night. Gooner Ron liked TOOAW's posts, so he smiled knowingly and dreamt of future glories of those with red shirts with white sleeves.

markymark; couldn't agree more mate. Until he is able to address the Ozil, Rambo situations we will be stuck in second gear. With the wages and money we could buy a top defender and also add some pace to our midfield. If he leaves Ozil on the bench enough then he might just start looking for a Turkish move. I think Ramsey has suffered from not being taught a proper position. He is neither one thing nor the other, Lets get rid and move on. What interests me is that clearly the defenders he has at his disposal just cant carry out what he wants, they aren't good enough. We are looking a top 10 side at present, nothing more.

Clearly Dick was a standout candidate in a very short list of "A"listers but apparently the job, after 3 games, is too much for him? AFC are a greatly reduced force these days thanks to an owner from hell & the unemployable Monsieur Hulot. Too big for a serial winner? I think not. Just watched the journeyman Barcodes make the mighty Chelsea ( not Chelski for much longer) struggle for a result so there is no need for despondency or panic. Dick has to hold the dressing room though & I would be very happy for him to bench both Ozil & the Welsh "wizard". They won't be missed & it would send out a very strong message - the real "star" at AFC has to be the Coach & not players with inflated egos. A bit more collective effort & listening to a proper coach will do for me at the moment. And while I am at it, despite his shot stopping heroics etc., I really think the German glove butler needs to be brought in asap as, imo, Cech hasn't great ability with his feet or mobility around the box. I can understand why he is holding on but if we are going to make such a basic change to our method of playing then he needs to make way.

I think the general consensus on here after Wengo was sacked and throughout the summer, was that it would take at least 2 seasons to clear up the mess whoever the successor might be. I don't see anything has changed. Come on Unai.

hardly handing over the baton when the outgoing genius was sacked and never heard of again. Thought the AKB dream was Wengoid would oversee the changeover and statues would be built and pies named after him but no - nadir! Some legacy that. I remember and love the players from the early PL winning years but the coach was no more than a name as his real job was some sort of darkside accountancy. But as TOOAW says Unai is not up to the job after three games but still had not figured out Wengoid after 22 years. I would be hurting too if I had been a disciple of that. I mean - what could Wengeroo have possibly taught Overmars? Perhaps how to organise his personal finances nudge nudge! ....

Fair play jumpers but, yes many have tried to airbrush the Wenger early years and some have tried with the invisible FA cup years (3 out of 4) JJ on this post being clear evidence. 'GG brought the AW glory'... Please. Perspective is required for the history of AFC. I do not need to defend Arsene anymore as the memory bank is full of great and not so great times. Good folk on other forums have questioned Emery. I'm not alone and I'd love to see The Arsenal back where we belong but it's a long haul by the looks of things. For the record.... I just don't believe it's necessary to be critical of a great Arsenal manager now the baton has been handed over.

TOOAW - Wenger inherited a side that contained the best back 4 and keeper in English football history; Ray Parlour; Ian Wright; David Platt and a Dutch fella called Dennis Bergkamp. Nobody has ever denied that Wenger's early work was brilliant. For the first 8 years he was amazing - sadly for the last 14 years he was appalling. Doesn't it tell you something that anyone trying to find positives about Wenger has to go back nearly 2 decades - like you did?? I wish Unai Emery all the luck in the world as he tries to clean up Wenger's mess. I hope he's got a strong character because he'll need it.

A win's a win alright Ed, 3 points, and that's what it's all about this stage (yes we've all heard that before of course, but we weren't bumbling about on our fourteenth season of mediocrity with an old clueless fraud in charge) this time it's with a bright new young fresh manager trying to put things right and trying to disinfect the place after him, yes it wasn't perfect and it's not going to be for a long time, he certainly has a lot of work ahead of him like you say, but we're up and running three points in the bag, so hopefully we can keep it going, keep the disinfectant flowing until he gets it right starting again with Swansea on Sunday. Onwards and upwards.

The eggcups lay broken on the floor, nobody needs bald eggs anymore. Too loud, the conversations bore; mantras we've heard them all before. Eggtimers' sands are running out, "We need more time!" the prophets shout. Unai? Me, nay? Hymn neigh, all want their say. Dwarfed by circumstance he stands alone, dwar fed just a bone. Set sights low and shift the blame, discuss vague shortcomings in every game. Discomfort spreads unease in the herd, 'A wrong choice?', unspoken question stays unheard. Old green bikes' recycled excuses, only distracts, muddles and confuses. Dig the dirt, and go further back. Who inherited whom? Swerve off the track. The gravity of it all just weighs him down? Messiah, prophet, or just a clown? Patience, or patients? There's the rub. Is this really happening to my club?

Good to see you are still defending your much missed uncle (have you tried writing to him?) and of course that defence would be nowhere without Wenger's invention of brocculi and I believe he also had a hand in reinventing the chicken. Credit where credit's due. Alas for Unai the job is a small one but will take a whaile to get rid of the general bad smell about the place. Never has a 22 year reigning manager been so quickly forgotten. Think you will find it was Adams who Anelka and Viera took their cue from. Do follow our history with less bias though I understand you suffered a great loss when your leader was so unceremoniously stripped of his power. Shocking and you are right to feel an intense suspicion of the new man after a 22 year love affair. Seems he got away without paying a penny back too.

jj. Wenger inherited a side that finished 7th and 5th before arriving at Arsenal. Most of the defenders were the wrong side of 30 with Wright and Merse careers all but over. Both moved on within a year and in came Vieira and Anelka for less than we got for Merse. Try to keep a bit of perspective. It does seem as if the job is too big for Unai. I hope I’m wrong but his defensive record at previous clubs is a worry and his handling of the big players is not quite Sir Alex standard.

If football was politics you’d argue around halfway through the parliament would be h crossover point. After that it loses credibility . Listening to MOTD i picked up a bit of gripe from Ramsay. Might be my imagination but really I’d be calm with him moving on. If he suddenly turned into Lampard mk2 you’d have to ask what the hell was up at Arsenal as we’ve had him here for a very long time. One player who I’d have liked to have seen under Unai was Walcott. Not to be now of course. Ozil has to go surely? The man just looks like poison. Hung about events outside of Arsenal, his form is as poor for us as Germany. Invite offers from Turkish clubs I’d say. Mitty does have the capacity to score goals and moves more. Keep him as our flair man. Unai needs to keep plugging away until the next transfer window. Raise 50m or so between the sale of Ramsay and Ozil and bring in a further player or two who will buy into his methods.

Only three games have passed so scraping a result against West Ham who will not be going down is no mean feat coming after the predicted first two losses. Sure Unai is trying his preferred system but if he feels some tweaking is in order he will implement during the next few games. Reckon with how the past manager (who?) gradually grinded down the club over two decades to what we now have. Basically a top ten side that really could call a top four spot a trophy. Maybe even the Totts, Man U might find that hard and news that Chelski are up for sale is interesting. Great to see a new kid break into the top any season and current surprises Bournemouth and Watford along with the fizz of Wolves (destined to be great again?) makes a lot of this particular PL possibly ground breaking. Money is there for a lot of clubs with the hunger to succeed and Unai perhaps has the hardest task in inheriting a squad that really is the blueprint for lazy, complacent sports with a football tag. Changing this will take some time and in a sense Wenger has not left the building because his monster is still showing life. You can imagine the gung ho attitude was down to Ramsay giving the signal but this was bound to happen as with the disturbed presence of rich, bored Mesut and his pathological sniffles. No crisis remotely and tons of faith in Unai who needs at least the next three years just to get Arsenal near the top four again. Always remember it was fundamentally the work of George Graham that brought the glory for Wenger in the early years and once it had passed it was a slow downhill as AFC concentrated on making dough with poor input. Wenger was never really a football manager and I bet that is just what Unai thinks. Elneny really does need a place in this team and Torreira needs a better English teacher because those two could do a nice job together as directed and eyes on making sure Guendouzi does not suffer a post Wenger type burn out. Hope some of this answers TOOAW's 'question.' Hard to respond to the other Wengo disciple as it appears his new pill is a heavy one .... ps my little team (no subs available !) are bottom of the 9th tier and losing by 4 is a habit. Have not missed a game and the club is bonding as it can. Football hey! Arsenal finishing 8th with a Europa cup would be reward enough with the current squad. One Unai!/one Unai!/ ....

I have to say that whilst I commend Emery for trying to implement a proper possession system which actually considers the defensive essentials it requires, and several other things such as standing up to and dropping that liability Ozil, and the underwhelming Ramsey, he hasn't yet shown us that he's got the flexibility to handle a squad in transition. You can't play a high line with positionally CLUELESS Xhaka, or inexperienced Guendouzhi, low work-rate Mkhitaryan and our slow back line. The fact that he's trying to impose this already, regardless of personnel is worrying. Also worrying is that I don't see evidence of him working on multiple styles; no team can high press for 90 mins, nor in each game of every season. I think the best thing to do would be to play 4-4-1-1, focus on countering vs big teams and harnessing the effective wing attacks Emery's nurtured vs weak teams, with a focus on second balls (the best way to break a parked bus). I would have Cech, Lichtsteiner, Socratis, Mustafi (for now), Monreal, Welbeck, Torreira, Elneny (hugely underrated player, great defensive-minded box-to-box player), Iwobi and then Auba in 10 role, Lacazette as the 9.

Agree with Bard Ramsey hardly seemed enthusiastic in his post match interview. There probably is a battle going on between two different football philosophies, freedom of expression v more organized football. Some of those players who feel they have no need to learn and prefer Wengers freedom of expression hands off style may start to rebel.Mustafi said that he is now getting guidance on his play which suggested he wasn't getting it before. The problem as I see it is lack of options in the squad regarding wide players, moving Bellerin up into midfield with Litch behind him may bring some defensive shape as teams are definitely targeting that left hand side.

Really pleased to get the first win - hopefully it eases the pressure slightly and we can relax into some sort of rhythm. The balance in midfield continues to be wrong, I’m not convinced we’ve got the blend of personnel to play our desired attacking football, whilst executing the high press and not leaving our CB’s too exposed in transitions. Given our FB’s are still given licence to bomb on I’d be tempted to play Torreira and Elneny as DM and Welbeck as one of the wide forwards.

"I am genuinely baffled as to how Emery is going to improve his side’s performance level, because this was not good enough, in spite of the final result." Well there's only two ways it can happen. 1/ Intense repetitive training in the 'art' of defending as a unit. 2/ Getting in new players in successive transfer windows. But that will clearly take time. In my view four windows (ie. two years) and even that is optimistic. There is no way we are going to finish top four this season. In fact I could see us staying sixth or even dropping a place. It is going to take the long haul because the problems run deep. I also hope that Smith-Rowe, Nelson and Nkeitea are brought on ASAP. And in answer to the question 'How long it's going to be Arsene's fault ' - I don't think it any longer, as he's gone. But the players he left behind and their less than solid mentality remains and changing that will - as I said - take a good two years. And whatever happens - Wenger will not be coming back ; so pining for that non event, will achieve nothing.

Kev a good summary. The question that comes to my mind is the one about teaching old dogs new tricks. It would seem to me to be a culture issue. After years of playing it off the cuff its really difficult to teach sub standard players more discipline. He is also hampered by the fact that many of the senior players are clearly not onside. Ozil is case in point, Ramsey is another. You will get nowhere if the dressing room is split. My suggestion is that he get rid of Ramsey and Ozil ( maybe Mustafi and Xhaka) and spend the money on a world class defender and a creative midfielder. It was always going to be a big task turning a sinking ship around, patience is a key.

Wemger's legacy = a club schooled in failure. He left such a message behind - a combination of talented players that can't be arsed to work and players that are simply not good enough. It is going to take years to unpick Wenger's mismanagement
