Unai Emery is not the coach to bring defensive solidity back to Arsenal

Unai Emery: No George Graham He

I think it was Sevilla’s excellent run of winning three consecutive Europa League trophies that gave me the idea, back when Unai Emery was appointed as Arsene Wenger’s successor, that he would address Arsenal’s defensive woes. In the drunken haze of hearing from someone other than Wenger talk about his plans for the team, I can only imagine I chose what I wanted to believe at the time. After all, don’t you need a solid defence to progress throughout the many ties you will face to win a European trophy?

In the light of the first three competitive fixtures seeing six goals conceded (which in fairness should have been more) I decided to look at the stats of Unai Emery as a manager, as much as anything to see whether the kind of display we saw against Chelsea is likely to be improved.

First up, I looked at Sevilla’s record in those three successful Europa League campaigns. Taking into account group stages (in 2015-16 that group being in the Champions League) as a rule of thumb Sevilla would concede a goal a game. The specific figures are – for 15 matches
2013-14 For 22 Against 14
2014-15 For 29 Against 14
2015-16 For 25 Against 19 (11 of those against suffered in six Champions League group games. Man City and Juventus qualified from the group)

If you take a goal a game over a league campaign, you will have 38 conceded. That is good enough for top four, but not to win the title. However, the Europa League is not ideal for that comparison. But as a sequence of trophy wins, back in early July, my belief in Emery was based on that, so it was something I felt the need to explore.

I then checked out PSG’s European record under Emery. In 2014-15, they conceded 13 goals in 8 games, whilst a season later, it was 9 goals in 8 games. Again when translated to a league campaign, it's at least a goal a game, although it's a fair argument to say the competition in the Champions League is going to be stiffer.

So let’s look at his domestic league record – all 38 games played unless stated
2017-18 PSG For 108 Against 29
2016-17 PSG For 83 Against 27
2015-16 Sevilla For 51 Against 50
2014-15 Sevilla For 71 Against 45
2013-14 Sevilla For 69 Against 52
2012-13 Spartak Moscow For 28 Against 30 (dismissed after 17 games only)
2011-12 Valencia For 59 Against 44
2010-11 Valencia For 64 Against 44
2009-10 Valencia For 59 Against 40
2008-09 Valencia For 68 Against 54
2007-08 Almeria For 42 Against 45

Here, for PSG, no problems. The team were conceding well under a goal a game and posting title winning defensive stats (although in Emery’s first season, that wasn’t actually good enough to overcome Monaco). In fairness, the French league is generally less competitive though, especially given PSG’s financial advantage. I think we can conclude from this that if Emery was given the Man City job, he should be able to get the goals against figures low enough to win the title. But Arsenal obviously need something different, for the simple fact that teams are less intimidated by them in recent seasons.

So we look at the figures posted in Spain. The best is 40 conceded in one season, the worst 54. The kind of figures that will deliver from third to sixth place. So some hope for Arsenal’s immediate aims – third or fourth place this season would indicate definite progress and a better record than at least two of the other ‘top six’ sides.

What is perhaps a little concerning though is Emery’s performance in Russia. Looking at the nationalities of the players in Spartak’s squad that season, a mix of domestic, Brazilian, Argentinian, Irish (Aiden McGeady), Armenian, Czech, Spanish, Swedish (Kim Kallstom!), Ghanain, Nigerian, Ukrainian, Italian, Georgian and Croatian. One imagines that translators were to the fore and that Emery could only really communicate with about half a dozen of his squad. That should be less of an issue in England. As Emery learned French to communicate with his PSG squad, so he is learning English now, even if on occasion his pronunciation of certain vowel sounds borders on the tortuous.

Yet, it cannot be denied that he is unproven as a manager outside of Spain, given his achievements with PSG were regarded as the absolute minimum expected and his lack of progress in European competition compared with his record at Sevilla. So if you enjoy a little punt on the football, it does appear as if Emery could offer you some interesting options. You could explore thebookiesoffers.co.uk to see some of the bonus bets available before you decide where to bet. Punters can find some best betting offers here like £30 betting offer by PaddyPower or £50 betting offer by Mansionbet. But having seen Arsenal’s three matches so far, it’s fair to say that betting on at least one opposition goal will more often than not see you profit.

There is an argument that the coach may not have the best of defenders to work with, but whose idea is it for both full backs to be bombing forward at the same time? That is the consequence of tactics. This situation might improve if the more defensively protective Lucas Torreira starts matches instead of entering after the interval, but one suspects a culture change may be needed more than one individual to stem the flow of opposition chances. Until then, Arsenal’s recovery from the car crash of last season is simply going to have to be dependent on outscoring the opposition. Because under Emery, the days of ‘boring boring Arsenal’ are not going to return anytime soon.

I feel like this entire article could have just been a tweet: "Emery's teams historically concede more than a goal a game, so don't expect the defence to improve a great deal".

I remember tooaw going on about 20,000 not turning up would be a good thing as apparently the real Arsenal fans would create the atmosphere for Wenger. I remember Ron saying the Emirates crowd would never turn. Wrong , wrong , wrong. Wenger later no more than 5 games after the 20,000 left . Wenger also lasted just 4 months after Sanhelli came on board. Sanhelli’s first public statement to a South African supporters group. “I’ve overseen 8 management changes” No messing Wenger sacked after the crowd refused to continue with him.

Badarse the troll, calls people foolish, nasty cowards , then rebukes a poster for daring to be younger. All this from the high and mighty Groper and PIE fan. You called for extended contracts and 3 more years. Now you prattle on about unworkable solutions of Wenger being Boss but not a boss. The players would give up straight away. Happened at UTD when Fergie aired a view about retiring they fell apart that season. I note there’s no c’mon Unai anymore, he’s gone the way of your Corbyn and Momentum bilge. You’re prepping your Anti Unai opposition. No one left to blow smoke up their arse. They’ve left you to rot. Poor Baddie. The rusty conveyor keeps on clanking forward. Mrs Badarse needs to nail down your coffin lid put you out to grass permanently.

The decline accelerated last season, 20,000 stopped turning up... yet what we needed was more Wenger for stability and continuity as the future is 'fearful' without that carrying on. Wenger got no time yet Emery is being given all the time in the world, it's not fair. This is first rate cluelessness. A rabble is a rabble, a coward is a coward... and an AKB is an AKB.

New AKB anthem: 'we are fearful/fearful Wengerites/ ....' Quite happy to see if Unai can stay in top 8 with a Europa or other cup run. If Wengoid had stayed on we would slip to 15th but of course his apostle would scream in a desert of his own making 'keep faith with our Lord Wenger.' Give him a D+ for trying today. Well done trollarse. Where the hell is TOOAW? Still celebrating the Spud win no doubt. If Unai puts a dent on the Totts can see why TOOAW would like Wengo to stay. Why BArse does have not a clue.

I understood very clearly, you're just trying to spin it now you've been caught out. You wanted Wenger to stay one more year for 'seamless continuity'. Therefore you think him leaving and Emery taking over this summer was a mistake. Yet you then still claim you support Emery. The two are incompatible. You call others names yet expect them to respond in a 'respectful' way. This is double standards, it's not an opinion, it's a fact. What gallery do you think you're playing to with this transparent spin, this feeble attempt to walk back what you so clearly said now it's been exposed?

All good points Gooner Ron and the little we have seen of Torreira bodes well with good positional sense and great forward passing. These dull long-winded posts from trollarse have little to do with football and perhaps that was the eternal link for AKB diehards with Wengoid. He had little of football in him and the contrast between him and Unai is of stark proportions already. Wengoling tried to create some abstract mystery around football because he really could not deal with the subject head on. The only reason he was ridiculously kept on (no wonder he had that insincere look and grin) was to apparently steady a large supermarket complex in a new setting and not a football club. He really never got football with his plastic erudition and it is funny to hear one of his plastic apostles living in fear (hilarious) now the landscape has forgotten his master already. Unai appears immediately as a direct honest bloke he loves his football. He has a nice edge to himself and a humility the arrogant and spoilt Wenger could never possess. Fearful about Arsenal. Embarrassing. But of course we know that said apostle has one aim in his life. To conquer the minions on this site. Funny when you think he is the biggest minion on all and if he read him even Wenger (hush hush) would be cringing, then laughing and probably wanting more. Fearful. Honestly Hahahahah!

Exeter stop appealing to the gallery, you may have the Nark and MAYDUP man accusing you of blowing smoke up bottom holes! How laughable, to be accused of being a troll then condemnation for agreeing with a poster. Now that's double standards. My view on matters was thus. I was aware I was in no way able to influence AFC in a positive manner or to do things my way. Consequently I supported the manager of my club and always have, always will do. I do not like mob rule or herd instinct in any form so the guttural approach of many on this site offended my sensibilities. I do not know the editor personally but his attitude was exemplary. More should have followed his approach. Then they at least would hold my respect even if I didn't see things in exactly the same shades as them. I did not want Arsene to stay one more year as a passage of time. I wanted a seamless continuity. I think I said that, so how did you misunderstand? The continuity wasn't happening so it begs for more time to augment it. This is or was the board's responsibility but they abdicated it. I said this too, how did you misunderstand that as well? To be fearful of an outcome and witness or anticipate a likely disruption is not negative. It is a sense we as humans enjoy and has prolonged the species so far. How did you not understand that? Read above to explain the dilemma of the new manager as I see it; it isn't condemnation of Unai becoming the new manager. On the contrary it is a form of support as I see his job as much bigger than many do. How did you not understand that as it was written clearly enough? To claim that I have no reading of the situation and am clueless just reveals your ignorance and nastiness. I put Arsene first? What does that mean? I support my club, you clearly do not, certainly not in the same way, so with your two dimensional reasoning if it's different then it must be wrong as you do not share it. George Bush mentality of 'with us or against us'. Naïve! The statement that anyone who wanted more Arsene deserves no respect displays a nastiness beyond much of what is said on this site. I call a rabble a rabble. Cowards, cowards. Behave differently and you are treated differently. I do not agree with Moscow Gooner's politics, we see life through different eyes, but I respect his views because he is quite knowing, so why are just a small clique singled out? By the way there is no smoke in my lungs at the moment. Now please mature as you are revealing your shortcomings in a glaring fashion.

I don’t think many managers of top teams (perhaps excluding Mourinho) continuously drill their back four like George used to. Staying compact and pushing up to catch opponents offside has largely given way to trying to dominating games with possession and when losing the ball effect a high press, win the ball back quickly or foul the opponent as soon as possible in the turnover. Hopefully Emery can keep working on this tactic so our central defenders are better protected and our midfielders find the discipline to plug the gaps left by our marauding full backs.

You wanted Wenger to stay another year. You wanted 'seamless continuity' with the next manager i.e. more of the same. You use negative language like 'fearful', 'disruptive' 3 matches into the new season. Exactly the sort of language you would be condemning were Wenger still manager. You are essentially saying the appointment of Emery was a mistake. You wanted Wenger to stay on. That's what you have said. Your adoration of Wenger blinds you to what was happening, you actually think it would've been better for him to stay on. You have no reading of the situation. You are clueless, you put Wenger first and are being called out on it. Anyway who wanted more Wenger deserves no respect. Even Wenger has since admitted his time was up, that in fact he stayed on too long, but you still wanted more. Someone who thinks in this way is not someone to heed any advice from.

Utter nonsense from Badarse. "seamless continuity" - what, the continued descent down the table, 5th, 6th...? You wanted another year of Wenger, followed by as close to the same as possible. The slide had to be arrested. It was announced Wenger would leave in April, Emery got the job in May, it was done as orderly as possible. But Wenger left the squad in such a state, the damage was done and it will take a long time to sort it out. At what club do you ever have a 'manager in waiting'? The Anfield boot room decades ago, last I can recall. Talking of 'disruption' is more rushing to judgment, in a way you considered treasonous when any judgment was applied to Wenger. You assume this season will be worse than last, after 3 matches. You reveal your true colours and who rather than what you support so blatantly, again and again and again.

So a small rabble who have been rude towards an Arsenal manager because not winning reflects on their manhoods are presented with a new man at the helm. He is an Arsenal manager, therefore my man. However I think the howling at the moon and the nastiness presented was disgraceful and marks people out for what they are. What are they? Generally cowards as the format chosen is a safe house for them. They also clearly have too much to say regarding that which they know little about. It amazes me that Arsene leaving was cause for a celebration amongst these minions. He never left in a sensible way; leaving without a clear line of ascension. The board should have insisted on a year with another promoted as a, 'manager-in-waiting'. They abdicated their responsibility and a knee-jerk reaction has left the club vulnerable, in my opinion. Why did they act this way? Was it due to a few whingers and whiners? No, it was probably the absence of CL money, though the profile presented by the scummy media probably influenced Kroenke Jr. The owner is money-mad. It is the ethos of most USA companies. Profit! Profit! Profit! I was relaxed despite the picture painted by the silly boys who posted constantly. As stated often AW would ultimately leave and we would continue with as seamless continuity, as is possible. Now we have a disruption. I am not comfortable with this. The environment is slowly becoming toxic. Defeat or poorly defended goals will bring condemnation from the so-called experts on the great god, 'TV'. Microscopic scrutiny on the manager and his squad has been invited in. Why should Kroenke worry? He'd taken his eye off the ball and was more concerned with buying AFC. The board are toothless and at best incompetent 'yes' men. It does not auger well for my club. I am really fearful and can anticipate a number of outcomes this season, some are frightening in their likelihood of damaging the club for the next decade. If things go badly and the manager leaves/sacked we will be rudderless and baling out a sinking vessel. That is no platform for a resurgent side. So to confuse an individual's love and concern for a football club, as a "loser's" requiem is naïve at best, stupidly blind at worst. I hope that it ends well this season, but find myself holding my breath. Good old Arsenal.

I think articles such as this do Emery a disservice so early in his tenure. Although it's a decent read and largely factual, the conclusion isn't necessarily so, and no one really wants us to be 'boring boring Arsenal' anyway. The fact is that the club have made some poor decisions in recent times both on and off the field, and the consequences of that mean that Dick now has a mountain to climb. We just have to accept that this season will be one of transition while he completes his assessment and hope for the best, in fact Bards got it about right with his timescale. Who would have thought when we left Highbury that the Managers job would turn from one of the most sought after in world football into some sort of poisoned chalice, and with a now outright owner who's motives are questionable at best ? Certainly not me. Whatever, we need to unite 100% behind Unai, because believe me, he'll need it.

Frank appears to have his crystal ball in hand but as we know defences across the globe are changing though Bellerin and Monreal could take a look at how those two young liver lads are doing it for Klopp. Bit of balance required and hopefully Torreira once he has gelled will be a significant protector for the two mainstays at the back. Ramsay looked well fagged out after his exerts and looked overly bemused with the idea that he must apply logic to his game. Unai will no doubt have to be a bit more flexible with his system with even Guendouzi looking a bit lost out there. See TOOAW has gone missing again no doubt celebrating the Spud win for all he's worth. Meanwhile his mate is trying to get GoonerRon to join him in the temple of the living dead. He had stepped up to the plate before, and every time he'd eaten his omelette. He wanted to give the man time but so much had been offered by so many that time had run out, well at least it was in short supply. He knew time bent as it was why the Tower of Big Ben was being repaired, so he too bent over. He didn't find any time there, just his face reflected in his shiny toecap. Time is more than hands on a face, that's just tactile. Why should he have so much time? It was a searching question, and as he searched he found an old conker-a sixer-a piece of string with a knot in it, which looked like Charlie George, a half-sucked Spangle, and a big ball of fluff, all in his jacket pocket. He nodded knowingly, then noed noddingly. It was a tight call, but he pulled up his braces anyway, and squeaked lightly. Why did Arsene have no time and was expected to deliver, yet the new man, a new man with a transfer crew behind him, also with his new additions had all the time in the world? Was he Louis Armstrong? It was a puzzle, but one without the five corner pieces. That in itself was quite enigmatic He'd looked, he'd watched, all seemed similar. Even the WOR said the same things to each other. It was bewildering, beguiling and bewitching. Perhaps that was it. The Witch Finder General. Possibly it was to do with the Wicker man. Perhaps as editor of the Ronline Gooner it was just a cover for that. Anyway the moving finger writes and having writ gets sucked if it's got egg yolk on it. Bad mistake there Frank, your in trouble now, you've mentioned wenger twice in your first paragraph, and once in the first two lines of your article, referring to his weaknesses (of which there was many) yes he certainly hasn't the best defenders to work with (and we all know why)unlike wenger when he first drifted in from obscurity in japan, that only for and their help would never have won what he did, or gotten as far as he did, but hopefully he will through time, and it's only his third game remember, so he's got and will be given plenty more time yet regardless of how he's been judged by some so early.

Completely agree Man from U. I watched the Untd/Spurs game, the defending on both sides was shocking. Dick may not be the best defensive coach ever but he has his work cut out with our players. Give him a season or two or at least 4 transfer windows and then judge him.

The art of defending is in a poor state worldwide. Look at clearing a corner or free kick for instance. The method used in the last few seasons is for someone to punt the ball 50 yards downfield, thereby almost certainly conceding possession, but allows the side to compress their half of the field again, only to await another attack. Good hard 1-0 or 2-1 results are becoming a rarity everywhere.

I really don't see the point of this & the sniping at Dick - particularly the "tortuous" pronunciation. No major parts of the globe are now pink in colour &, given the composition of most Premier Club squads, we cannot arrogantly demand players speak english as some would probably like. In fact spanish is probably the one "must have" language - although I really enjoyed the Conte years. How long has Maureen been managing over here? Yet his rants & whinges are more incoherent than ever. Pep talk ain't that great either but that's OK because he has always worked in a money/success environment. It's early days but I do like the way Dick has conducted himself - Spanish/French & acceptable English isn't half bad in my book. But unlike Pep, Dick has come through the school of hard knocks ( 2 sackings) as well as being a serial winner so, to me at any rate, seems well grounded & modest. A refreshing change & well suited the the values of the old AFC, if not the current Arsenal Corporation.
