Prologue
Women's football has come a very long way since the bigoted, small-minded, and no doubt misogynistic women haters at the FA banned the game, after Dick Kerr's Ladies beat St Helens 4-0 in front of 53,000 at a packed Goodison Park on Boxing Day, 1920.
The reason those pathetic prejudiced little men forbid females playing football was because they feared the women's game would rival the men's in terms of popularity in the aftermath of World War One.
Never mind that iconic match at Everton's ground 105 years ago was in aid of injured soldiers, or that surely both men's and women's football could have flourished side by side - as they are now.
Fast forward more than a century, with the nation wildly cheering the progress Sarina Wiegman's mighty Lionesses have been making in Switzerland this summer to reach the final of Euro 2025, you wonder where the game would be right now without such a damaging - and pointless - long-term ban.
As it is, the Lionesses - as ever - have showed talent, technique and character, pride and desire, teamwork and passion, to win through to their second successive Euro final, which also happens to be Wiegman's fifth showpiece final on the bounce.
England women's loyal fanbase will be out in Switzerland in their numbers, as well as millions of supporters viewing back home - with more than 7.3m watching the thrilling last four, last-gasp victory over Italy. A record that would be shattered this weekend if it were not for the fact that both ITV and BBC will be simultaneously broadcasting the match.
This England team is packed with winners, from Lionesses captain, leader, legend Leah Williamson, to fellow Euro 2022 victors Kiera Walsh, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, Lucy Bronze, and Alex Greenwood, as well as Williamson's fellow Arsenal teammates Alessia Russo and Beth Mead.
And that's without mentioning the burgeoning talent of the Gunners sensational 19-year-old teenage talent Michelle Ageymang, whose goals against Sweden in the quarter-final, as well as Italy in the semi, have played a large part in Wiegman's side's stirring run to the final.
However, the Spanish will be formidable foes, with the respect evident between the sides, not least because both sets of players know each other well from previous matches, including the 2023 World Cup final, when Olga Carmona's winner - assisted by soon to be Arsenal's Mariona Caldentey - ensured Spain beat England 1-0 in Sydney.
Even if Renee Slegers' Arsenal side emerged victorious against the might of Barcelona back in May, to memorably lift the Champions League.
Five Gunners players who took part in that match will be in the squad this weekend, including Lotte Wubben Moy, and of course, lucky charm Chloe Kelly - whose never-to-be-forgotten winner against Germany at Wembley three summers ago clinched the 2022 edition.
It promises to be a terrific final, with this England side standing on the shoulders of giants of previous generations all the way back to Dick Kerr's Ladies.

What the coaches say:
Sarina Wiegman, England coach: "I think that both teams have so much respect for each other.
"They are good on the ball, so I expect they'll have the ball a little bit more, but we have played games where we've had a certain amount of ball possession too.
"We are just preparing as well as possible. We have to defend really well and try to harm them at other moments."
Montse Tomé, Spain coach:
"It's an incredible joy to be in the final. I'm very happy for the players, the staff, and everything we are building here in Switzerland.
"Now, it's time to recover. We'll start looking at England more closely, although our analysts have already been watching them live and studying their performance at these Euros.
"We're going to dive deeper into their game, and we're going all in."
What the players say:
Leah Williamson, England captain: "We didn't do exactly what we were meant to in the semi - there's no time for that [in the final].
"We love that the fans support us and want them to have a good time.
"The fans in the stadium are definitely getting their money's worth and at home I hope everybody's enjoying themselves.
"Stick with us. The stakes just keep getting higher."
Aitana Bonmatí, Spain midfielder:
"For the first time, we are in a Women's Euro final.
"We feel proud to be part of this generation, winning so many things.
"We will be grateful for that in the future - we will enjoy that, but now we have to start thinking about England.
"We have faced their players many times. We know them and they know us, so we want to prepare as well as possible."
