Cech Saves The Day

Online Ed: Arsenal continue winning streak at home to Everton

Cech Saves The Day

One thing I think we have to take a great deal of pleasure in that has developed in recent weeks. In spite of some highly worrying situations that develop due to the style Unai Emery is trying to impose on his players, Arsenal have developed a winning habit. To win whatever the circumstances is certainly a desirable ability. And let’s be fair on Everton here, they could easily have won yesterday’s match, were their finishing better, and were a keeper of lesser talent than Petr Cech been charged with keeping them at bay.

The Arsenal captain was the unquestioned man of the match, pulling off a number of excellent saves when Everton had broken through the Gunners’ backline. Way back when, John Terry stated that Cech could be worth 10 – 15 points a season for Arsenal, after his move across London had been confirmed. The display against Marco Silva’s side was evidence of that.

Even his distribution seemed to improve. No really mad moments, although it was interesting to see him come and intercept the ball near the touchline as the game wound down. No nonsense, no attempt to find a team-mate. Just put it out for a throw and run back into his goal. The player that was guilty of losing possession in dangerous areas yesterday was Granit Xhaka. I was hoping for better things after a very decent performance at Newcastle, but it was not to be. He was partnered by Lucas Torreira, who finally got his first Premier League start. The Uruguayan was spiky and always looking to get involved, whether his team had the ball or not. He received an early booking, but managed to keep enough discipline to avoid a second.

Everton were by far the better team in the first half, as Arsenal struggled to fashion many chances. It does not seem to be an unusual story lately. Whatever Emery is saying in the dressing room at half-time does seem to have a positive effect. In spite of doubtless having the opposition scouted, it may be that he actually needs to see his players face them for 45 minutes before working out exactly what is the best approach. If that’s the case, at least it augurs well for the second half of the season.

Arsenal had a run of eight league matches between facing Chelsea away and Liverpool at home. They have won the first four, and the ones remaining are Watford (home), Fulham (away), Leicester (home) and Palace (away). It will be difficult to take 12 points from these matches, not the two away ones, but if Emery can get his defence a bit tighter, they have a chance. To get back in the top four, they really do need to try and ensure they win the majority of the matches against the teams outside of the obvious top six. Up to now, I’d say it’s been a case of getting away with it more often than not, although at least a clean sheet was recorded against Everton. The presence of Torreira from the start in achieving this was less of a factor than the brilliance of Cech.

There was fortune too, in the award of the second goal, which although a little chaotic, was definitely offside. Still, the fixture list did not hand any luck to Arsenal’s new head coach with his opening two matches, so maybe he is due a little. It deflated Everton sufficiently to allow the game to wind down without serious fear of a late comeback. Let’s hope the recent success can continue against Marco Silva’s previous team next weekend, before which we’ll see a mix and match side in the League Cup v Brentford.

Hi Berry, spot on, I suppose we've all wondered that over the years, many of the old Arsenal players we know and knew certainly would have, and more previously too, yes RVP, and all those outspoken ones he got rid off, the lists endless, even Cesc, why not take him back when reportedly he had the chance? why were all these legends who i'm sure would have taken a position at the drop of a hat ignored Keown the biggest ball licker of them all but still ignored, yes he surrounded himself with nodding dogs alright, the same with the players why they didn't rebel and force change (they'd have been gone in the blink of an eye), all to comfortable to speak out (a lot of them didn't even have to perform) and rock the boat as they knew they wouldn't get away with it and the same treatment elsewhere hence all this so called loyalty, thankfully it seems to have all changed now. Onwards and upwards.

Difficulty post again so lost my last post which was of thesis length where I defend the theme that Untold are an embarrassment to Arsenal and have you ever seen them mention anywhere Unai by name? They also say their stupid little banner is there permanently. Take a run and jump Attwood! None of the posters of which there are about 4 ever mention Unai either. Scientology could learn from them. Oh for another win tonight with a Rowe hat trick.

Suker, yes it does seem there is a genuine improvement in mood, camaraderie, togetherness on the pitch and indeed all round, I guess they're as relieved as us.

Hi Berry - I was going to mention this and then had technical issues . Basically I’ve been twice in a row and scanned every inch of the ground. The banner appears to have gone. I suspect Untold were told no longer fitting. Nor should it. Effete ballet dancing , poncy embarrassment . If I was an away player I’d have probably gone in extra just for reading that . At last hard work , team effort is being put centre again. Two Ex Posters - how quickly Wenger is being forgotten !

This player culture runs through many clubs as well as at AFC. There is little hunger at the top of the game when you see the likes of Sanchez on more money than Ozil sleeping on the job since he left Arsenal. AFC are at that crossroads of either being a top 8 team or a top four team. Wenger took us down to top 8 status but the top four comfort culture without actually challenging for the trophies lingers as it will with the behaviours of such as Ozil and Ramsay. Unai has without fuss got on with the task of overhaul and this little unbeaten run we are on is testament already to the man. Can we go the whole season unbeaten? Haha! Laughs also for Frank Lampard doing Man Utd. Nice one.

Has anyone noticed how busy Unai is in the technical area during a match? he’s moving about barking orders constantly. When he sits down, another coach gets up and does the same. Love it. The only coach who looks lost is Bouldy who just sits there watching the match?

MBG - interesting to hear Cech say what a lot of us hadsuspected for a long time. Is the Untold financed Emirates banner 'Football should be an art'still on display? Rather confirms what a lot of us thought of that site as well. Despite Cech's words isn't there a bit of you that also thinks why didn't the players put their collective foot down and force a change from what they were being told to do? I guess those that didn't agree with it all (RVP springs readily to mind) deserted the sinking ship, although it's a little disconcerting that so many of the others were happy to toe the line on Easy Street and pick up their wages at the end of every week.

What is also pleasing to see is that the general improvement and mood on the pitch has extended to general commentary on the Gooner site. Days of mediocrity hopefully a thing of the past.........

Agree with the notion that the Europa is the best hope for the season and also note how a previous massive AKB like GoonerRon can move on and demonstrate he really is about the team not the man, unlike certain types who got themselves banned.

I see the cat in a hat has had a Swipe at TOF saying what a lot of us already knew, playing his way was more important than actually winning, just a pity he hadn't the balls to say it when he was still here, but it will still certainly not go down well, with TOF himself and future employers, good, just when your trying to forget the fooking weasel you hear things like this again, and from players too which brings back what a useless egoistic arrogant c**t he was. At least now he goes on to say that has all changed with a winner in charge, you have a hell of a lot to answer for wenger you old fooking fraud..

We still looked a little disjointed but managed to put a decent enough Everton side to the sword. Encouraging stuff! Also, mbg managed to NOT mention our former manager. That has to be progress, right?

It’s early doors, but I think Lacazette is currently the front runner in the most improved player under Emery. Appreciate the opposition has not been the best, but he’s been a real threat in the last two games. He’s much more powerful than I thought, and there’s a real connection between him and Auba. Özil really doesn’t seem to give a monkeys at the moment, but on £350K a week is he to all intents and purposes undroppable?

Got away with this one but there were also positives in Torreira & Holding & I thought there were signs that Bellerin was having some proper coaching for once. On that last point, 36 isn't "past it" for a goalkeeper ( think Buffon) IF he is getting proper coaching plus some competition for the shirt. imo I am still seeing too much ineptitude & smirking from the usual, overrated suspects however.

He certainly did Ed obviously that's why the boss has him in there it's not for his playing/passing out from the back, it's just the kind of performance he needed, another couple of goals one another cracker from Lacazette, it's good to see the improvement already under Unai and the camaraderie among the players, who certainly look to be enjoying their football again (along with the fans) a long way to go yet of course, especially with the defence, but I think it's fair to say we're on the right track at long last. Onwards and upwards.

Was over at the match yesterday with the wife and kids. I thought the spine of the team - Cech - Torreira - Lacazette - was excellent and delighted with the win, great habit to win when not at our best in the first half. Telling contribution from Mrs H, who by her own admission doesn't know a lot about football. Five minutes into the second half (as we were defending a corner) she nudged me to ask which net we were "shooting into", she also thought all the players have really good legs. However, about midway through the second half she nudged me again and said "he isn't trying" and I looked round to see that she was pointing at Ozil...

Good win and as mentioned already good to keep the momentum going .Still think Granit is the weak link in midfield along with Ramsey ! Also agree with Ron we are not pressing from the front only Lacazette and Iwobi when he came on appear to work at it . If Everton's forward line had our finishing ability it may of been a different result , they certainly pressed well. Looking forward to seeing the team he fields for Wednesday good chance for the youngsters to show what there made off.

Definite improvement as Kev says but a Premier League challenge is way beyond the current squad. My hope for this season is for Unai Emery to deliver the 4th Europa League of his career. As one of the Wenger Out organisers, that would be the best possible outcome - seeing the new man lift a European trophy after watching Inspector Clueless get shafted in Europe every year for 22 years.

Cech really is in the best form he’s had at Arsenal which is great. He looks leaner and more agile with his goalkeeping and genuine competition for his place has seemingly sharpened him up. I’d prefer we weren’t giving him so much work to do though, for me it comes back to the unbalanced nature of our ‘front four’ - I’m still not convinced we can accommodate Ozil and Ramsey in the same midfield attacking trio. Lacazette’s goal was pure class, I think he is a hugely underrated player. I thought Holding looked composed when he came on and liked that we had a reasonable control of the game after the second goal. One thing about our style; I’m not seeing any pressing from the front. Perhaps it’s us employing a different tactic for certain games but the way Unai talked about it, it felt intrinsic to the way he wants to play so I expected to see us trying it more. That said, I’m happy if we just keep winning.

The new ugly Arsenal sounds like a good way to keep the likes of Keown out in the cold. Bet Unai doesn't even know who the pretender is. PEA's goal may have been offside but he also missed out on being awarded a penalty. Things have really changed and as Kev says the winning mentality has not been there for seasons. Santi strongly alluded to that whopping problem under Wenger and certainly likes Unai because he knows the guy really does football. Wenger was more economics/arts - wrong ****ing class! Notice too how Untold have now a readership of about two since Wenger left. Now that is justice.

Kev, surprised you did not mention Lacazette's excellent goal, a really classy finish. Cech is playing better because he has proper competition for his place and Emery seems to be bringing back our No 1 professional pride. Irritated by Keown's comments about Wenger's legacy being our new strike force Lacazette and Aubameyang. Martin, you do not have to keep thanking Arsene for all those 2 minute cameo's he gave you at the end of the 2004 season so you would get your winners medal - and besides our new strike force had very little to do with AW.
