Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno has not suffered ligament damage and will only be missing for six weeks - rather than a far longer spell on the sidelines as first feared.

The 28-year-old German landed awkwardly after Brighton's Neal Maupay crashed into him in a reckless challenge during the first half of the Gunners 2-1 defeat on Saturday.

The former Bayer Leverkusen netminder was stretchered off at the Amex afer his knee gave way underneath him - with fears that he had suffered serious knee ligament damage and would be out for 12 months.

However, according to a source within the club who spoke to the Gooner Fanzine, Leno has avoided lasting injury and will only be missing until late July, early August.

The good news came after his scan result was better than feared

While the news is far better than initially expected, the news is still a blow for head coach Mikel Arteta who is struggling with an injury crisis ahead of the Gunners clash on the south coast on Thursday against Southampton.
