Ten fun facts you didn't know about Arsenal

As the new Premier League season draws ever closer, here are ten fun facts about The Arsenal.

1 - Why do Arsenal wear red? The Gunners sport red shorts to this day thanks to a donation of red shirts from Nottingham Forest shortly after Arsenal were founded in 1886. The club, then known as Dial Square, had two former Forest players in Fred Beardsley and Morris Bates - who had moved to the Woolwich Arsenal for work. Following the formation of a cash-strapped football club at the munitions factory in south east London, the pair asked Forest if they could send a set of shirts for Dial Square to play in. Forest duly obliged – and the rest is history.

2 - It is a common misconception that Arsenal have never been relegated. They have, in 1912-13 when Woolwich Arsenal finished bottom out of 20 teams in Division One. They have never been relegated from the top tier of English football since they were elected to Division One after the end of World War One and will mark 101 years in the top flight this coming season.

7 – Arsenal have won three doubles – in 1970-71, 1997-98 and 2001-02.

8 – Arsenal have been champions of England 13 times – 11 more than bitter rivals Spurs, who last won the league before man set foot on the moon!
