Arsenal star Lucas Torreira in Atletico Madrid loan talks

According to reports Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is set for a loan move to Atletico Madrid.

A number of reports state that the La Liga side have been in contact with the player’s agent and are in advanced negotiations for a possible deal.

Betway Insider believes that Arsenal are set to have a busy end to the transfer window as deadline approaches - with all deals getting funds to secure Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.

The highly rated defensive midfielder starred when Atletico knocked Liverpool out of the Champion’s League at Anfield last season.

Lucas Torreira moved to Arsenal from Sampdoria in 2018 for £26 million. The Uruguayan became a regular starter during Unai Emery’s ill-fated spell at the Emirates but has since fallen out of favor under Arteta.

Torreira has barely featured under Arteta, with the Arsenal manager preferring a combination of Granit Xhaka and Real Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos, with Mohammed Elneny also featuring ahead of the diminutive defensive midfielder.

Prior to Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat by Liverpool on Monday evening at Anfield, Arteta praised the pair following the late 2-1 victory over London rivals West Ham a week ago.

“I think they’ve been really good since I joined the club,” Arteta said.

“Not only then but also this season, he deserved to play against West Ham, but I just wanted to rotate.

“I thought it was a game where we were going to attack the spaces and the way they defended, we wanted to create some situations with Dani there but if we can strengthen the team then we’re going to try and do that.”

Despite Torreria’s possible exit reducing their midfield options, his move presents Arsenal with a clear opportunity to sign Partey - who has been linked with a move to the club the whole summer.

While Arteta would not be drawn on specifics the former Arsenal captain hinted at  the possibility of new arrivals and departures from the club before the October 5 transfer deadline.

“Until the market is gone, everything is still open,” Arteta said, adding: “Depending on what happens with some other players, we are open to discussions, the market can surprise us.”

The Gunners have been unable to raise the £43 million release clause to trigger Partey’s release from Atleti.

Arsenal were open for a swap deal involving Alexander Laccazete and Mateo Guendouzi but Atletic did not entertain the idea of either player appearing for them.

Torriera also has other suitors with Torino and Sampdoria still battling for Torreira.

The Turin side, who were initially turned off by the high asking fee set by the Gunners, still believe they can land Torreira before deadline day, even if earlier suitors Fiorentina are not in the running

Apart from Lucas Torreira, Shkodran Mustafi is also set to depart from the Emirates camp.

With the arrival of defensive stars Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba, the German defender’s future in north London is at stake.

According to reports from Italian sources, Lazio have already expressed their interest in signing the defender, and Arsenal is ready to cash in on him.
