Prologue

With 13 league titles, and 14 FA Cups Arsenal should have won far more than a mere two League Cup trophies in their long and illustrious history.

However, through fault - final defeats vs Leeds 1968, Swindon 1969, Luton 1988 or the worst Wembley performance in the history of the club vs Manchester City in 2018) - or by design, Arsene Wenger picking youngsters against peak Jose Mourinho's Chelsea in Cardiff back in 2007 for example, or simply bad luck, the 2011 final vs Birmingham, anyone? the fact is Arsenal have massively underachieved in this competition.

Indeed, after getting miserably knocked out during two desperately underwhelming semi-final matches by eventual winners Newcastle last season, even the club that had previously won a domestic trophy in more than five decades, seven in total, has now lifted the League Cup more recently than the Gunners.

And so it begins again, with a challengning trip to Stoke, when Mikel Arteta's side take on Port Vale. The North Londoners haven't played in Burslem since beating the Valiants on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time in their third round replay, following an instantly forgetable goalless draw at Highbury. Wenger's side went on to win the double that year, so perhaps a trip back to the Potteries is a good omen.

Let's hope so.
