Arsenal Women made it two wins from two in the Women’s Super League with a 5-1 comeback away to West Ham United.
Alessia Russo was involved in the build-up to Frida Maanum’s equaliser following Daphne van Domselaar’s own goal, before her backheel set up substitute Stina Blackstenius.
The England star then netted a powerful strike from range before slotting home an injury time penalty, with both her goals and the assist coming from the number ten role following Blackstenius’ half-time introduction.
Asked by the Gooner about which of Russo’s qualities make her effective in the deeper role, Slegers said “It’s probably the areas in the box where you get your finishes from. She is a really good finisher in those positions where the number ten often gets to.
“That’s why we’ve been working with Less every now and then in that position, because we have to really analyse and sometimes we need the Russo player type in the nine, and sometimes we need the Blackstenius player type in the nine.
“We know that Less can do the ten as well so I’m really happy, and not only the two goals- the penalty and the shot from distance- but all the other work she’s done.”
Maanum was replaced at half time despite scoring Arsenal’s leveller and impressing in a difficult first half for the Gunners.
“A very short conversation in the changing room at half time,” Slegers told the Gooner of whether it was a difficult decision to replace the Norwegian.
“She played really well, it was a tactical decision. That was the quick communication we had in the changing room.”
