Renée Slegers praised a stronger Tottenham team after Arsenal’s goalless North London derby draw today.
The Gunners were unable to create big chances across the full 90 minutes as they struggled to break down the robust home side.
Arsenal have dropped points in five of their league fixtures this season, a disappointing start for fans and players.
Slegers reflected on this afternoon’s opponents and where it went wrong for her side.
She said: “They are much stronger this year than last year and they have a more aggressive pressing structure.
“They can do it physically and are very brave on the ball when they build.”
Arsenal had fleeting moments of potential during the game, but didn’t make the most of the energy they built.
Slegers said: “We created momentum, so I’m happy with that. We had a lot of situations in and around our box, but we need to capitalise when we have momentum.
“We got passes into their box, but the finishes aren’t easy from those moments. We have shots but can we create bigger and better opportunities with clearer shooting opportunities?”
“We are not getting the wins we want at the moment, and a club like Arsenal of course wants and needs to win, so it’s a frustrating period.
“We see that there’s things we can do that will turn it around for us because we believe we have all this quality, and we did so well last year.”
When asked whether last season’s Champions League win has created false expectations from the fans and media this year, Slegers spoke candidly.
She said: “What we said off the back of last season was ‘look at what we can do when we’re at our very, very best’ and that creates belief in what we are doing and how good we can be.
“We need to be very humble because that was a one off, and it was a difficult journey for us as well and the challenge is to perform at this level consistently.
“I do kind of understand the concern, but it depends what angle you take. [The Champions League] wasn’t easy, but we had the grit and determination that we could get what we wanted, and that’s still there, of course.”
The Gunners remain fourth in the WSL table, level on points with Tottenham and just one behind Manchester United.
They will face Real Madrid midweek at Meadow Park in the Champions League.
