Martin Odegaard hails Hale End pair after humbling City

Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard praised the team after their sensational 5-1 rout of fading Premier League champions Manchester City at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

Odegaard got the ball rolling in just the second minute, prior to Erling Haaland's 55th minute equaliser.

However, the Gunners refused to be downbeat and exploded, grabbing four more to hand City their heaviest away league defeat since a 4-0 loss to Everton in 2017.

“Yeah, it was a good one,” a humble Odegaard said afterwards.

“A massive performance, massive result and the atmosphere was unbelievable. Such a nice game to play in with the supporters on fire, a big result in the end.

“I think it’s a big boost, but to be honest, the belief and everything was there already before the game. Obviously, a big result helps and gives energy and belief to everyone. It was already there but this is another extra boost hopefully.

“It was good to get the early goal and we were so good in the high press, we won a few balls there, scored one goal after that and should have scored another one. So, it was a good start.”

Odegaard also praised the way the team battled back after Erling Haaland’s equaliser – with an instant reply from Thomas Partey.

“After their goal, the way we reacted was brilliant,” he said. “Straight away we go and we’re on the front foot, scored straightaway and then after that we didn’t stop. The way we played and the way we ended the game after was amazing.”

The third goal was a special moment for Arsenal's famed Hale End academy as graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly scored his first senior goal.

Lewis-Skelly celebrated in the style of Erling Haaland, who had earlier pulled Manchester City level following Martin Odegaard's second-minute opener but who the home fans relished taunting following explosive scenes during the momentous 2-2 draw between the sides back in September.

Moments later pal Ethan Nwaneri also got in on the act with a stunning goal in stoppage time, curling into the corner after cutting inside from the right, to complete the rout.

Talking about the talented pair, Odegaard said: “I’m really, really happy for them.

"You can see, he’s a big personality, gets on the ball, makes things happen, from left back to do what he’s doing with and without the ball for his age, unbelievable.

"Ethan as well coming on, with the impact straight away, two good players we have there!”
