Arsenal sign midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in £51m deal with Viktor Gyokeres set to follow

Spain international has signed a five-year contract after Arsenal agreed transfer in March

Arsenal have beaten off interest from Liverpool to finally land long-term transfer target Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in £51m on Sunday. 

More good news is sert to follow for Gunners fans with the club in talks with Viktor Gyokeres as Mikel Arteta looks set to bolster with squad with a much-needed centre-forward. 

The North Londoners have finally got their summer transfer window moving this month, after first signing back up keeper Kepa for £5m from Chelsea last week. 

Sporting director Andrea Berta has underlined his crendentials by getting the Zubimendi deal over the line.

Zubimendi had spent his whole career at Real Sociedad, for whom he made 236 appearances in all competitions after graduating from the club's academy.

Zubimendi said: "This is a huge moment in my career. It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are.

"I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come."

Zubimendi will wear the No 36 shirt and will join up with his new team-mates ahead of pre-season.

Spanish international Zubimendi helped his country defeat England 2-1 to win the final of Euro 2024, coming on as a half-time substitute for the injured Rodri. 

The 26-year-old started all five games in the 2020 Olympic Games as they claimed silver in Tokyo and now has 19 caps for La Roja, also winning the 2023 UEFA Nations League.

Boss Arteta added: “Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team. He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us. 

“The standard he has consistently performed at over the last few seasons for both club and country is exactly why we are so excited to have him with us.

"We all welcome Martin and his family to the club.”

Arsenal are also now in talks to sign Sporting's prolific Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres for £70m.

Discussions have been started regarding personal terms for the prolific 27-year-old Gyokeres with the Lisbon giants resigned to losing their star striker who has netted an impressive 97 goals in 102 matches during two seasons in Portugal, with Arsenal's sporting director Berta leading talks.
