Arsenal Women beat Corinthians after extra time to win inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup

Caitlin Foord’s 103rd minute winner decided a thrilling final at Emirates Stadium

Arsenal Women have made history after beating Corinthians 3-2 after extra time to win the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.

Renee Slegers’ side were pegged back twice in front of 25,031 fans at Emirates Stadium, including conceding a stoppage time penalty as Corinthians took the game to extra time.

Substitute Caitlin Foord scored the decisive goal in the 13th minute of extra time when her low effort beat Leticia at her near post to seal the trophy for the Gunners.

Celebrations were dampened by a serious injury to Gunners goalkeeper Anneke Borbe deep into extra time, after she collided with Lotte Wubben-Moy and was stretchered off after a lenthy delay.

Olivia Smith put Arsenal in front after 15 minutes, finding the net after Stina Blackstenius’ effort was saved by Leticia.

After Borbe tipped Duda Sampaio’s drive onto the crossbar, the German goalkeeper could not keep out Gabi Zanotti from the resulting corner. The 40-year-old’s header was parried over the line by Borbe after taking a deflection, as Corinthians levelled in the 21st minute.

Arsenal dominated for much of the second half and found their reward when childhood Gooner Lotte Wubben-Moy headed home from Emily Fox’s cross just shy of the hour mark.

The Gunners were moments from sealing silverware when Katie McCabe challenged Gisela Robeldo in the penalty area deep into injury time, and a VAR check concluded McCabe had committed a foul, despite clearing the ball.

Substitute Vic Albuquerque dispatched her spot-kick to take the final to extra time, in which Arsenal, and Foord were too strong for Corinthians.

African champions AS FAR were beaten 6-0 on Wednesday as Arsenal reached the final, having qualified for the inaugural competition- essentially a slimlined Club World Cup- by virtue of winning the 2024/25 Champions League.

National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) winners Gotham were defeated by Corinthians in the semi-final, but thrashed AS FAR 4-0 earlier on Sunday afternoon in the third-place play-off.
