Arsenal saw off Chelsea in a victorious 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge to close the gap between the sides to just a point.
The first half ended goalless, a classic end-to-end match up between the two women’s football heavyweights, but it was Beth Mead who broke the deadlock after the break before Mariona Caldentey sealed the win for Arsenal.
Chelsea created moments for themselves but struggled to get their attempts on target, many of them from range, and their gap to top-of-the-table Manchester City remains six points.
The Gunners certainly started brighter, creating chances inside the first ten minutes due to their high press, but Chelsea’s counter-attacks threatened Arsenal’s quality.
The exciting first half ended 0-0, with Mead shining as Arsenal’s best, despite a booking, and Anneke Borbe staying steady between the sticks.
It was in the 55th minute that Alessia Russo picked out Mead, who, with plenty of space, took her shot brilliantly to break the deadlock, becoming the first Arsenal Women’s player to score at Stamford Bridge.
Just five minutes later, Mead’s pass found Caldentey, who took her time and fired her shot home, past Hannah Hampton, to double Arsenal’s advantage.
Chelsea searched for something, taking shots from range and in the box, but were not able to rescue this one for themselves, recording their first WSL loss at the Bridge.
