Arsenal Women set to be without captain Kim Little for Chelsea clash

Four players are back in contention to feature for Renee Slegers’ side

Arsenal Women are likely to be without their captain for Saturday’s crucial Women’s Super League meeting with Chelsea at Emirates Stadium.

Experienced midfielder Kim Little limped off late on against Leicester with a knock, and head coach Renee Slegers revealed “Probably she won’t [be available]. We’ve had our last session, the game comes tomorrow 12 o’clock so I expect her not to be available tomorrow.”

Olivia Smith, Frida Maanum, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Kyra Cooney-Cross all missed the win over Leicester due to knocks or illness, but Slegers revealed the quartet are all back in contention to face Chelsea.

“It's small margins often,” Slegers told the Gooner Fanzine about facing Chelsea. “We know that Chelsea likes to come out in a certain way. We know that momentum will shift and we know where our strengths are. We have a really good idea of where our strengths are and what we can bring to the game.

“Not least, the energy that we can bring in the Emirates with all these people involved. Tomorrow is not going to be only those 11 players on the pitch, it's going to be everyone.

“But then we also know that we have a really clear idea of Chelsea and how they play their games and what their strengths are and how they want to put the game to their hands, so I think we have a very clear idea and tomorrow it's going to be about execution. Like I said, I think there are two really good teams going against each other and there will be fine margins on the pitch.”

Asked by the Gooner if Arsenal against Chelsea is the biggest game in club football, Slegers said: “You put me on the spot now! I have to go through all the leagues quickly to find a fixture that can compete with this one. Maybe not- this could be one of the big ones in Europe, in women’s football.”
