Euro 2025: Two assists for Mariona Caldentey as Spain thrash Portugal

Caldentey pulled the strings in midfield as tournament favourites Spain won 5-0

World Cup winners Spain got off to the perfect start at Euro 2025 with a 5-0 win over Portugal on Thursday night.

Arsenal star Mariona Caldentey assisted two goals as Montse Tome’s side raced into a 2-0 lead after seven minutes, which was doubled by half time.

Caldentey’s low ball across goal was finished off by 18-year-old Vicky Lopez, before the Mallorca-born Champions League winner set up the goal of the game with a long ball from deep that was controlled and finished by Alexia Putellas.

Substitute Cristina Martin-Prieto, who had replaced Caldentey in the 77th minute, headed home in stoppage time to seal Spain’s biggest Euros win in their history.

Spain top Group B on goal difference, with Italy beating Belgium 1-0 in the earlier game on Thursday.
