Exclusive: Arsenal Women academy duo set to sign professional contracts

Jessie Gale and Cecily Wellesley-Smith are expected to put pen to paper this summer

Arsenal Women Under-21 prospects Jessie Gale and Cecily Wellesley-Smith are set to sign professional contracts with the Gunners, the Gooner Fanzine understands.

The academy duo, both England Under-19 internationals, have trained regularly with Arsenal’s senior team this season, as well as enjoying successful dual registration spells in the third tier with Watford and Oxford United respectively.

According to sources, Gale and Wellesley-Smith will both pen professional deals this summer, following in the footsteps of academy graduates Maddy Earl, Laila Harbert and Vivienne Lia, who all signed contracts in January. Both players will likely spend next season out on loan.

Striker Gale, 18, has impressed in front of goal for Arsenal and England at youth level this season, as well as National League South side Watford. Gale made her senior Arsenal debut in a behind-closed-doors friendly against West Ham last year.

Both Gale and Wellesley-Smith made their England U19 debuts this season, with centre-back Wellesley-Smith having helped England to a fourth-placed finish at the 2024 Under-17 World Cup.

Wellesley-Smith came through Oxford United’s academy, and has spent the last two seasons playing senior football with the U’s. The 18-year-old is a regular starter for the Young Lionesses, with her height an asset in central defence.

Arsenal won the PGA League Under-21 Division One title this season, finishing two points clear of Manchester United to claim silverware.
