Fabio Vieira: Why his Arsenal career never truly took off
Fabio Vieira’s Arsenal future looks to be reaching its conclusion with VfB Stuttgart and former club Porto hovering
Fabio Vieira’s Arsenal future looks to be reaching its conclusion. VfB Stuttgart have shown the strongest interest this summer, although there remains a gap in valuation between the clubs.
The Portuguese midfielder has not been involved in Mikel Arteta’s squads since the season opener against Manchester United, which only adds to the sense that a departure is edging closer.
Vieira arrived at Arsenal in the summer of 2022 from Porto for £30 million, carrying with him a reputation as one of Portugal’s brightest young talents. He was admired for his creativity, close control and ability to thrive in tight spaces these are qualities that seemed an ideal fit for Arteta’s project at a time when Arsenal werepushing for Champions League qualification.
His start was encouraging. Vieira’s first Premier League start came away to Brentford where he scored a superb strike from distance in a 3–0 victory.
Soon after he added another goal against Bodo Glimt in the Europa League and played an important role in the win at Wolves before the World Cup, creating the opener that helped Arsenal move five points clear at the top of the table.
He also caught the eye in mid-season friendlies, registering goals and assists against Lyon and Milan. But opportunities remained limited, largely due to the outstanding form of Martin Odegaard.
The following campaign was seen as pivotal.
Vieira began brightly, scoring the decisive penalty against Manchester City in the Community Shield and supplying assists against both Manchester United and Fulham.
It looked as if he might finally establish himself, yet injuries and a red card against Burnley disrupted his rhythm. The momentum stalled again, and his role diminished.
A return to Porto on loan provided much-needed minutes and confidence. He produced 11 goals and assists across 38 appearances, showing glimpses of the talent that convinced Arsenal to sign him in the first place. Despite that, Arsenal’s stance this summer has been clear: they are ready to move him on.
Why did it not work out?
Part of the answer lies in his physical profile. Vieira’s slight frame has often left him exposed in the Premier League, where intensity and duels are relentless.
Timing also played a role. Arsenal accelerated from a side chasing the top four into genuine title contenders almost immediately after his arrival. That sudden rise in standards meant patience was limited and opportunities scarce.
There is still a talented player in Vieira, and he may yet flourish in the right environment. His vision and technical ability remain clear.
But at Arsenal his chapter is closing, and it feels like the right decision for both player and club to move forward separately.
