Arsenal are close to securing the signing of Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, with Jakub Kiwior set to join FC Porto.

Why Arsenal need £50m Piero Hincapie 

The plan is for Hincapie to arrive initially on loan, with the deal potentially rising to around 60 million euros.

If completed, he would become the first Ecuadorian player to represent Arsenal.

This has the makings of a very strong signing for Mikel Arteta.

Hincapie fits the exact profile that Arteta values when shaping his squad. He brings winning experience, having been a key figure in Bayer Leverkusen’s league and cup double during the 2023–24 season, where he featured 43 times.

Since joining Leverkusen in 2021, Hincapie has played 166 matches, an impressive level of consistency and reliablity that Arsenal desperately need given the club’s struggles with defensive injuries in recent years.

As such he is able to compete with powerful strikers, while his pace allows him to recover quickly in one-on-one situations. This combination makes him very difficult to beat, while adding athleticism and a winning mentality to the squad.

3 - Versatility

Importantly, his versatility means he can operate across the backline, giving Arsenal tactical flexibility during matches and across competitions.

4 - Pressing ability

His aggressive pressing is another key strength, aligning perfectly with Arteta’s approach. He will certainly be in tune with Arsenal's pressing rhythms through his innate football intelligence and timing

However, there are areas that need refining.

His discipline has been a concern, as he is prone to committing unnecessary fouls and picking up avoidable bookings.

That side of his game will need to be tightened under Arteta’s guidance.

Overall, Hincapie looks an excellent addition to Arsenal’s defensive unit.

While it is always disappointing to see Jakub Kiwior move on, the logic is clear as he seeks regular football, and Arsenal in turn gain a defender who is ready to strengthen the team immediately.
