I have to say a massive thank you to Joel @sportthroughhalens_ after I came across his absolutely brilliant photography during Arsenal's League Cup match up at Port Vale.
The talented Joel is a Gooner exiled in Stoke, and I was so impressed by his outstanding work I got in touch to ask if we could use his image of mighty Max Dowman for the front cover of our new issue.
As you can see, thankfully Joel said yes. For more of his superb pictures follow him on Insta @sportthroughhalens_
And don't forget to keep an eye out for the brilliant Lumi Lehmuskallio's always excellent preview video of issue 313 later this week.
I also have to say a massive well done to our Gooner writers and creatives for their professionalism in getting their copy to me in good time, as deadlines were tight as they've ever been for this issue - mostly because I was gallivanting for a week in the Baltic States based around covering England's game in Latvia.
For more from my trip add your email to my Substack Layth's Take. Speaking of which...
Layth's Take Substack
Speaking of my Substack, could I please ask that if you enjoy reading my Arsenal coverage (and perhaps my writing on travel, music, life and dogs) then please consider supporting my work by upgrading to a paid subscriber.
Some of you have been reading my Arsenal work for nearly 15 years now, across a variety of newspapers and websites, and I love each and every single one of you for taking the time to do so.
Over the years, I'm proud to say that some of my readers have even become friends - and while I don't expect anyone to always agree with what I write (heaven forbid! It'd be a boring world if we always agreed on everything) - I really do appreciate you taking the time to read my work, whether you agree with what I write or not.
If you do enjoy my work, could I please ask that you consider supporting my Substack platform for less than the price of a pint a month.
Not least because it will allow me to write more of such things on that platform that hopefully you will enjoy.
With the way journalism is going now, Substack is already being seen as a vital way for writers to connect with their audiences, now that those pathetic corporate beancounters who run big newspapers and big websites these days simply don't care for anything that isn't clickbait.
By the way, if you needed another reason to take out a subscription to my Layth's Take Substack then every single penny raised will go to the upkeep of the Gooner Fanzine and paying its bills - so we can't say fairer than that.
If the above works for you, or you'd simply like to explore my extensive archive first, then here is the link - or simply google Layth's Take Substack for more.
Cheers......
Housekeeping
Don't forget to add your email here so that you can still receive our Gooner Fanzine Friday newsletters once our three month freebie from Mailchimp expires after I spent far too much time and effort moaning at them about their extortionate prices.
A massive thank you to everyone I've bumped into recently, in Bilbao, San Sebastián, Meadow Park, Vale Park and St James's Park, and Fulham - not to mention flogging the Gooner at Arsenal tube and Bear Roundabout this season who have taken the time to come up to me and share such kind words about the Gooner, not least when sharing their condolences about the late Steve Ashford. (
Please note as we went to press before the awful news about Steve broke, we will be decidating our December issue to the Highbury Spy's memory.
The Return of Well Played / Pile of Pony
