Renee Slegers' Arsenal Women's side are aiming to reach the Subway Women's League Cup final

Prologue

While Jonas Eidevall was not a popular manager, the underwhelming Swede could lay claim to lifting the the Women's League Cup twice during his disappointing tenure as AWFC boss.

Back in March 2023, the Gunners triumphed 3-1 over old London foes Chelsea, then led by USA coach Emma Hayes, at Selhurst Park, in a stirring performance that gave hope that Arsenal could emerge as serious WSL contenders to the Blues.

Alas, the rigid Eidevall failed to realise those hopes last term, despite the Gunners once again beating the West Londoners, this time at Molineux, with Stina Blackstenius scoring a 116th-minute winner as Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0 to lift the Continental Cup final.

The match - or at least the post-match was made notable for the clash between Hayes and Eidevall that did the game no favours at all.

Fast forward nearly 12 months and both bosses have departed the London giants, Hayes to Olympic glory with her USA team, Eidevall to the San Diego Wave.

Renee Slegers steadied the ship after Eidevall left the club back in October following *that* 5-2 humiliation in Germany at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stages, prior to a dispiriting Emirates defeat against Chelsea and their new boss Sonia Bompastor that forced the club to act.

With the impressive Slegers' now at the helm as recently confirmed permanent head coach, the 35-year-old former Dutch international sealed an impressive 4-3 victory over Manchester City last weeked at the Joie Stadium, much to the frustration of boss Gareth Taylor, who will be looking not only for revenge, but the chance to steer his side to the showpiece final, which will take place at Pride Park on Saturday, March 30.

It promises to be a must-watch clash.

Arsenal Women vs Manchester City Women team news

Arsenal's new loan signing from City, a certain Chloe Kelly  is cup-tied for this mouth-watering clash, and is set to make her bow for Slegers' side in the eagerly-awaited North London derby at the Emirates on February 16.

What the managers say:

Renee Slegers, speaking after beating City 4-3 on Sunday

"I was hurt of course after the loss against Chelsea. We analysed it. I asked 'who are we? What is the Arsenal way? What is our identity? How will we win games against top opposition?'" said Slegers.

"It wasn't the end of the world from a performance perspective against Chelsea but the loss of the three points meant a lot.

"I think the group is so strong from game to game and also within the games that we can show resilience and come back - which is what we did today."

Gareth Taylor reflecting after City's 4-3 WSL defeat at the hands of AWFC at the weekend

You don't want to lose against teams you are competing with for those [top three] places," said Taylor.

"But that's our objective now, to be in the Champions League qualification places at the end of the season.

"We don't want it to be the case. You saw fight in the team but there were too many errors and too many duels not won."
